Hello, this is a quick video guide of what to expect if you are to pick Mongolia as your Civilization.

This will tell you what to expect out of the special units, what to expect out of the playstyle, and what victory conditions to expect to dominate with.

Victory Conditions
Hello, if you really didn't want to watch the video I'll give a quick rundown of what you probably should be thinking if you are randomly paired up with the Mongolia or are just new to Civilization and think they would be fun to play!


Victory Conditions

  • Domination
    By far the best route to go if you are playing Mongolia. You'll be able to kill your enemies with speed. The Keshiks will dominate the land battles especially if you pair them up with your special Great General unit - the Khans. Conquer City-States only for fantastic resources otherwise they are generally not worth taking over. Highly recommended.

  • Scientific
    Khan I ask you a question? Is it worth playing this route? It's more or less a safe route in case you can not withhold your massive empire while striving for the Domination victory. As many other guides of mine I generally recommend that if you have taken many cities/empires over and you just can't seem to put the nail in the coffin to go the Scientific route. Lots of cities tend to generate a lot of science. Recommended.

  • Culture
    Culturally the Mongolians do not have much. Considering they have a start bias in the middle of continents you'll have the chance to be near Natural Wonders that will give you extra culture. Unfortunately, that is literally the only benefit of going a culture route. There is no personality trait to help you out in this regard. Would not recommended putting points into the Patronage tree to befriend City-States considering that goes agains't the personality trait. Not recommended.

  • Diplomatic
    The Mongolians Diplomatic? Hah. There is no such thing. This is especially true considering his special trait ability which helps take out City-States thus making most of them hate you. Nonetheless, you could ignore the personality trait and befriend all of them but that absolutely negates the point of playing the Mongolians. Not recommended.
Social Policies
Won't get into as depth as the Victory Conditions only because Social Policies can usually go anyway for any Civ and still win. Will only note those that are very important to each Civ.
  • Liberty
    As many bloodthirsty empires go, they should strive for Liberty. The extra work from workers and to a lesser extent, the free settler will go far for you. With all of the land you'll be obtaining from conquest you'll be continously building armies to help protect the newly acquired land. That being said the extra speed for workers will do wonders help complete tiles that need to be worked on. Recommended.
The rest are really up to you on how you're playstyle will be for policies, Tradition for hunkering down with few cities - Honor for cutting down enemies early on - Liberty for expanding like a mad-man but again, that goes for any Civ, not just the Mongolians.

  • Europe's knowledge of Asia was largely due to the trade routes maintained by the Mongolian Empire.

Thanks! I generally stick to your rule as well. If I begin to take over City-States I just continue to do so - happiness permitting. It's usually too much of an uphill struggle to obtain the happiness of other AI because you either attacked a City-State or attacked one they were allied with. At that point I just say, "You know what? Time to get stomped." although on higher difficulties I'm the one who gets stomped.

I will give one more bit of feedback... if you can somehow manage to make up for your hostilities towards city states with other civs... diplomatic victory can be a very enjoyable and effective route to take as mongolia. Be selective with which city states you allow to live so that they will vote for you, and kill the rest.

Or you can do what I do, and simply kill every damn city state you can. A city-state without a capital is a city-state without a vote! (¬‿¬) d

This is true, it is a very hotly debated issue. Where my opinion on this comes off from is on a "Basics" guideline. Those that are generally watching this won't be the ones playing on Immortal+. Those players should avoid many cities and stick with small empires with many Capitals under their rule. Nonetheless on the lower difficulties it's easier to keep many cities and they can grow quicker etc. etc. thus allowing an easier time with a Scientific Victory. Thanks for the feedback by the way!

Actually as far as science gneration goes it's hotly debated whether more cities or less is better. So you may wanna remove that bit about how lots of citis produce mroe cities as opposed to say a single city witha massive pop
