Video of how to play the Shoshone.
This will tell you what to expect out of the special units, what to expect out of the playstyle, and what victory conditions to expect to dominate with.

Victory Conditions
If you really didn't want to watch the video I'll give a quick rundown of what you probably should be thinking if you are randomly paired up with the Shoshone or are just new to Civilization and think they would be fun to play!

Victory Conditions

  • Domination
The Shoshone are unique through their personality trait, and by unique I mean awesome! It's extremely helpful to have a bunch of land taken up randomly when you build a city. It's helpful when near an abundance of resources but a couple tiles away since you'll generally obtain all of them without buying a tile. The unique scout will obtain what you choose to want through discovering the city ruins. Lastly, the other unique unit will help in numbers, you'll be able to produce more of these than your counterparts who are building Cavalry. Recommended.

  • Science
You'll be able to be one of the best land grabbers in the game considering you'll obtain a large chunk of land just for plopping a city somewhere. Generally, more land equals more science due to the fact you can generate more people in the city, take science inducing tiles, and the like. Now, there isn't a direct bonus for the Shoshone in a Scientific Victory outside of achieving technology early on from ruins. Overall, a good alternative to a Domination Victory. Recommended.

  • Culture
You'll obtain that large chunk of land once you build your first city - along with any others. With that being said, you'll have the ability to expand early on before anyone else because of that unique personality trait. Smack the personality trait on with Tradition Social Policy track and you'll be maxed out on tiles very early on which helps in expanding the one city you have or the few that you do have. Outside of that, there isn't a direct ability that will help you, but that doesn't hinder a Cultural Victory. Recommended.

  • Diplomacy
The Shoshone are a well rounded Civilization in that you can win with any Victory type just as easy as any other. Granted I would recommend Domination/Science over the last two here, but all work just as well. Anyhow, the Shoshone do not have a personality trait nor a real advantageous ability to win a Diplomatic Victory. The reason I'd still recommend this as a Victory condition is strictly due to the fact that you'll be able to be friendly with other AI and City-States because you won't need to build too many cities in order to have a huge land mass. Nonetheless, I'd still keep building cities, but then I'd recommend a different Victory condition at that point. Recommended.
Social Policies
Won't get into as depth as the Victory Conditions only because Social Policies can usually go anyway for any Civ and still win. Will only note those that are very important to each Civ.
  • Liberty
Probably one of the smartest decisions to go with - is the Liberty Social Policy track. You'll obtain a worker, they'll work faster, obtain a settler, faster settler production, alongside a free Great Person of your choice after you fill out the policy tree. Considering you'll be able to amass a large chunk of land once you settle a new city, it's vital that you continue to build cities. You'll easily be the largest Civilization before anybody else because you can grab land so easily.

  • Tradition
For those looking for something besides Liberty and would rather stick to a Diplomatic/Cultural Victory this would be the option for you. This will allow your cities to grow faster, defend better, build wonders quicker, and provides culture buildings in 4 cities for free. Since you'll have that large chunk of land once you settle a city, you'll be able to pick and choose which tiles should be improved first and have a leg up on everyone else.
The rest are really up to you on how you're playstyle will be for policies, Tradition for hunkering down with few cities - Honor for cutting down enemies early on - Liberty for expanding like a mad-man but again, that goes for any Civ, not just the Shoshone.
Factoids
  • Different bands of Shoshoni Indians lived in what is now Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and even parts of California. Most Shoshone people still live in these areas today.

  • There are nine different Shoshone tribes today.

  • Originally the Shoshones would use dogs pulling travois (a kind of drag sled) to help them carry their belongings. Once Europeans introduced horses to North America, the Shoshones could travel quicker and further.

  • The Eastern and Northern Shoshones lived in the tall, cone-shaped buffalo-hide houses known as tipis.

i think these are great guides, however I dislike this being categorised/tagged with Achievements. has no mention of achievements in this entire guide which is what I was looking for. :berserk:

Yeah, they had a hotfix a while back that had allowed the pathfinder to newly aquire that ability every three ruins. Unfortunately, hadn't had the time to update the video etc. but thanks for pointing that out. Honestly forgot about that. It does usually take the luxury resources right away, but I've had many a games where it just chooses some really useless tiles over the ones that have some signifigance. So, I'm not fully convinced yet that they have a "smart" on-city tile selector. Still though, I'd say 8 times out of 10 it will give you that luxury tile(s) though.

Really appreciate the comment, and thanks for checking out the guide!

A couple of quick notes about the Shoshone's ability and the Pathfinder: I've noticed that when you settle, the expanded land usually aims to take luxury and strategic resource tiles. So expanding quickly is helpful if you are trying to get a total monopoly on a resource. As for the Pathfinder, if you choose a perk from a ruins, it is not available until three ruins later, as opposed to what was said in the video (that all perks had to be taken before it was available again).

I actually usually just turtle with 2 cities (one wonder, one military) and just puppet everything else, and if cities r on another continent I ally with a city state and help them capture cities. Morroco (kasbah) aztecs (floating gardens) and venice (double trade routes) have uniques that gives them a chance to build the biggest possible cities in the game, while ethiopia/india get considerable bonuses for having a small empire.
Shoshone on the other hand r very powerful in that they can expand the best and have a wider defense ability than other civs (no other civ defense bonus effects all their tiles and all their units from turn 1) meaning you basically just got to plop that settler down. I do think they r the most powerful civ in the game (after turn 1 they winning...always), but seeing as they can't turtle as well as atleast 5 other civs but can city spam better than anyone else I would do liberty tree with them.
It is possible to win any victory with any civ through.

Well remember that this/these guides are geared towards the newer player, and not meant for those looking to beat the game on Diety/Immortal. I mean those that are interested in that could most definately find some quick tips in these guides.

The Shoshone are really fun due to the fact that they can turtle with the best of them and expand very well. They don't necessarily need to expand though, due to the extra tiles they recieve on city-founding they aren't required to continue to expand for more land. You tie up Tradition with that bonus and you'll have the tile max for the Capital and some other cities faster than anyone in the game.

I must say though, this Civilization is by far the hardest to really say what their weakest point is as they can dominate in almost any situation. Glad to read your opinions on them though, do you like to play Domination games primarily by any chance?

Think going tradition with them is like venice/ethiopia going liberty. The large cities on founding means u don't have to build culture to get land. Liberty - Order - Rationalism are best policies for them in my opinion, and science/domination victory is what they are def more geared towards. The bonuses they get from the start are impressive but still need to take advantage of their predisposition towards expansion on deity victory rather than turtleing for culture.
