There is no workaround.
The Scorched Wasteland is a huge area, with more enemies than I have seen in one area, lots of gathering points, and a huge mini-boss. I almost finished everything, and got jumped near the last gathering point. I made the mistake of throwing a mega bomb to try to finish the fight fast. Of course, the game locked up.
I alt-tab’d out to the task manager and found memory usage at 93%! Much more complex modern games never get anywhere near that. I think the game has a memory leak or is poorly optimized for PCs [hardly a surprise…].
The most likely workaround is to save before entering any huge/complex/busy areas, and then close the game down. Restart the game fresh, finish that one area, create a new save, and exit the game.
I tried that with the second attempt at Scorched Wasteland, and had no issues. It isn’t clear whether I just got lucky or the workaround worked. It is worth a try, if you plan to finish the game with as few headaches as possible.
