Originally, I made this collection to keep track of my mainly used add-ons. Over time, however, it has become somewhat of a collaborative project with close friends, aimed to enhance and transform the L4D2 experience according to our own vision and preferences.

This is a collection that aims to make the L4D2 experience refreshing, challenging, fun, and bizarre, for veteran players of the game. You will probably like it if you fit into the following:
  • You appreciate variety and RNG elements in weapons, items, campaigns, and different survivor perks
  • You appreciate graphic improvements, and quality-of-life additions to the game
  • You appreciate the idea of a winter aesthetic for the game's visuals
  • You appreciate a higher difficulty (intended mainly to play on non-realism expert), that is also well-balanced and allows for a much better, and strategical experience if you decide to play with bots in your team.
  • You want a lot of changes and fun additions, while not straying too far from the game's original vision (The collection is meant to be played in L4D1 and L4D2 campaigns. Custom campaigns are likely to cause issues)
  • You don't mind some surprises, overall quirks and references to some other popular series, like Yume Nikki, Persona, Azumanga Daioh, Bocchi the Rock, etc.


Below you can find a guide on how to install (since some tweaking is needed for optimizing the experience), a proposed way to play this (PERMADEATH MODE!) and an index of the collection in case you want to analyze it by sections.

Installing

1. Subscribe to all add-ons.

2. Run a single-player game to generate setting files. Exit after it ends up loading.

3. Open your Left 4 Dead 2 folder. Then navigate to /left4dead2/ems/. This is where your add-ons setting files are. We will be tweaking some of this to optimize the experience.

To make the Bridge Destruction, Plane Crash, and Gas Station Explosion events rarer (balanced around the idea of seeing 1 per game. So, 1 for L4D1, 1 for L4D2. Though at the end, it is all up to odds)
4a. Navigate to /ems/bridge_destruction.
4b. Open settings.nut with a notepad app (Notepad++ is ideal)
4c. Set the "Chance" value to 8 -> "Chance = 8" , And the "Limit" value to 1 -> "Limit = 1"
4d. Repeat for the settings.nut files found in /ems/gas_station_explosion, and /ems/plane_crash. All chance values must be set to 8, and all limit values must be set to 1.
4e. Save file

To make the buffed Scout and AWP gunshots attract infected according to their new damage, and at the same time, to half the range of ALL weapons to not have a constant horde running after you.
5a. Navigate to /ems/gunshots_attract_infected.
5b. Open weapon_volumes.txt with a notepad app
5c. Set the following line changes:

To make Survivor Perks work without VSLIB (vslib is a laggy mess, in my humble opinion), and add the alternate perks!
6a. Navigate to /ems/survivorperks.
6b. Open settings.cfg with a notepad app
6c. Set the following line changes:

Hardcore challenge
(The intended way to play this)

This collection is meant to be played for L4D1 and L4D2 campaigns. No custom campaigns.

A fun way to experience the higher difficulty and changes is to try and complete the 14 official maps in chronological order. PERMADEATH mode.

1. Make your way through the maps in the following order (play on Campaign Expert, no realism):
  • No Mercy
  • Crash Course
  • Death Toll
  • The Last Stand (It's OK if you die here, since this map is an alternate ending. Just move on to the next one)
  • Dead Air
  • Blood Harvest
  • The Sacrifice (Sacrifice whoever you want! The result will be reflected when you play The Passing)

  • Dead Center
  • The Passing
  • Dark Carnival
  • Cold Stream (It's OK if you die here, since this map is non-canonical. Just move on to the next one)
  • Swamp Fever
  • Hard Rain
  • The Parish

2. If somebody dies, they're out forever unless you find a defib before the level ends ;) . Kick them out of the game, and at the start of each campaign so you're left with the survivors that remain.

3. If the whole team dies, start from scratch. Good luck. Good strategizing around the Witch and Tank will be fundamental to continue. Hordes, alarms, and onslaughts can also be game-ending if not anticipated properly.
