Look I am into some autistic type stuff right
This game may be a bit horny but I swear to god being able to make any career in one of these open world RPGs keeps me hooked
I have done nothing but bard the hell out for two whole weeks and have been buying equipment that makes me into a martial artist master able to dodge bullets and ♥♥♥♥
And in the meantime you can also do stuff like cook meals that increase all these various stats, or skills, or mutate yourself into a god-tier individual because gambling your body away to the Well Gods is an actual legitimate strat and you will thank me for reminding you to savescum so you dont get stuck with a mutation that halves your intelligence stat.
I have been playing this game for weeks and it is like crack cocaine for my autism dawg.
If you're the kind of person that can deal with some horny ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in order to build a successful brewery by grinding bee mobs to obtain queens to make beehives to produce honey that will go into the wine barrels that make you mad cash, or singing so good it convinces the cat god of music that you're a pretty cool person and you should definitely recieve more boons that increase your charisma, musical performance, and katana-swinging, or genetic manipulation on the bear cub you recieve to turn it into the most god-tier bear cub bears have ever ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ known?

Get this game. Even in early access, it is well worth buying into. The dev is STILL ADDING ♥♥♥♥ ON A DAY BY DAY BASIS, NOTHING IS STATIC
WELL
WORTH
THE MONEY
AND THE TIME
AND YOUR LIFE.

Absolutely addicting in every sense of the word
I really need to get into the modding scene for this since I've unlocked nearly everything but genuinely, this is a game well worth getting if you're into roguelikes

Fourth Time I've edited this

At this point I genuinely dunno what else to add, this ♥♥♥♥ has went from negative, to positive, to negative, and now positive again

Like, I really REALLY wish gabe could just add a hand-wavey sign to this cause the development of this game, the community and more has never been more turbulent. Its like watching a consecutive tsunami hit a city, that city rebuilds itself every time too. I sincerely dont know where this game will go.

Will they keep nerfing stuff? Will the enemies be absolutely god awful? Will they add actually fun weapons while ensuring the older ones aren't outclassed as time goes on?

I dunno. I really don't know, but hey, you could probably keep your eye on it and see where this game goes.
Me? I think I did my part, played a bit, and until then I'm just gonna sit back and let things roll.

I like Scumhead's previous work, Vomitorium. It was a slightly rough but very enjoyable experience, coupled with great art and spooky aesthetics that any lovecraft-lover would frankly enjoy.
This game though? Definitely rough, that's for sure.

What's there is fine, audio is god tier and artwork is to be expected of a spiritual successor to Vomitorium, but the combat is frankly jank - there is no real dedicated dodge mechanic apart from performing a sprinting jump which gives you some I-frames, beyond that though sometimes enemy hitboxes can mess up and you can just wail on them with the melee attack and just cheese them then and there. Bosses too are also pretty jank, but I can get over that. Controls are definitely something that need to be worked on: Unlike a traditional metroidvania like Super Metroid, Castlevania, hell even Hollow Knight or Dead Cells, pick your poison, Angel's Gear operates on a very odd keyboard and mouse control scheme. It's not something you'd see in a 2D metroidvania compared to like, say, an FPS metroidvania - it takes some getting used to, but it is serviceable. However there are some flaws with it - shooting has some Metroid Dread/Return of Samus elements, where aiming puts you into a motionless state where you can aim in 8 directions, not bad, but it can mess up a bit when you're crouching or especially when you're trying to perform other actions like sliding or a melee attack.
There is no options to rebind the controls either.
As a matter of fact, there's no menus whatsoever. The only sort of "pause" screen you have is through the map, via tab, and escape just minimizes your screen.
There's no other options beyond that, you are stuck with the keybinds you have, and if you don't memorize the controls that are thrown out to you through text boxes when you get new abilities or items, you're SoL. As a matter of fact the game will tell you about mechanics you don't even have access to yet when you attain new forms, its that or it was frankly broken, I've tried every button on the keyboard when it prompted me to use the C key to use an alterative form to the "Id" form I got about early-mid way through the game, nothin'. Like a lot of others here say, the controls definitely feel the most unfinished compared to the rest of the content.

Overall? Very rough experience, frankly I can't recommend it for now. There is definitely some potential here, and I'm sure Scumhead will get the rough patches smoothed out with this release, because like I said, Vomitorium was a great experience through and through for an FPS Metroidvania, but save your money for now, maybe give it a couple more months before things are really smoothed out.

Tried it for about an hour until I got to this puzzle where you need to count some stuff before a bloody F. No matter how many times I entered the code counting up all the stuff on a bloody memo, still couldn't get unlock the door. I'll be real, its probably my first filter I couldn't get past with this game, so for now I'm just gonna give my initial thoughts on the matter:
Game seems a little jank. Used an Xbox One controller and I noticed the MC tended to walk slightly to the right, giving me the impression that the game was very sensitive to d-stick inputs. Doing some calibrations didn't fix the matter, and it seemed it was the most sensitive on the right side of said d-stick. Other inputs also seem to double over on each other, like when you're reading a note or a diary you may accidentally skip over some dialogue despite the fact you only press the A button once.
Everything else seems pretty dope as well, reminds me a LOT like Misao, Mad Father, or even Corpse Party before it went down the toilet with its sequels, that is, some deaths are so shocking they're just straight up hilarious, theres a bit of Japanese jank that feels quite like those old RPG-maker horror games back in the early 2000's, but some puzzles can be a bit obtuse, and as with the aforementioned puzzle, downright unsolvable unless you're a guru or you have a walk through on you
Overall, I'd recommend waiting a bit until things are patched up, or if anything, just use a walkthrough for some of the puzzles when one comes out. Despite the cliche'd and generic saying here on steam, I really do wish Valve had a "mixed" or "meh" option for this stuff, but for now it's just gonna have to sit as a negative.

Having got this game from the beta, they changed a lot of things that I felt negatively impacted the game overall after it released into 1.0

For one, Story: No matter what, progress is tied to the story of the game, which involves you going around from planet to planet scanning items and things, going to a story-specific location, fighting a boss, going back to the "hub" area of the game, and repeating this process about eight or nine more times. In a sandbox game that supposedly tells you that you "make your own story" its completely antithetical to the actual gameplay.

For another, they completely changed the way you access harder planets. In the beta, all planets were open for exploration and building, but were locked between various "sectors", with sector X being the endgame sector (if I remember correctly), and all it would take would be to craft various ship parts in order to access them. Now, planets are locked behind environmental hazards that will kill you if you even take one foot on that planet, and you need specialized gear in order to explore them - which, mind you, is also locked behind the story.

Third are bosses; the game functioned much like Terraria where you have to fight bosses and obtain some crafting material to make specific items out of them. However, this only applies to...one boss I think, maybe two. Most, if not all of the bosses, have a specific gimmick now that you have to exploit in order to beat them, and once you do, you progress to a second room and obtain your gear, which for the most part may just be a randomly generated gun or melee weapon and some plot-important resources. All bosses are tied to the story once again, meaning you can't just summon them and fight them. You have to physically progress through the story, fight in their crafted "arena" and then grab your goodies when you're done with them, completely unlike the beta which.

The content updates after 1.0 are very lackluster too; Mechs and Bounty Hunting are completely optional and don't do much to give a sense of accomplishment, they feel very tacked on compared to the base game (which already has the story looming behind you, waiting for you to complete it), and by the time you fully upgrade your mech or get to that endgame bounty content, you'll just feel dissatisfied with the whole thing.
Starbound had a great thing going on with it; yes, it felt a lot like Terraria in terms of its mechanics, but quite honestly that was a good thing, and what original things it DID do it did great as well. However someone over at Chucklefish ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up somewhere along the lines or someone at that company must have left, because after 1.0 the theme and idea of the game shifted completely and utterlessly.

Not to mention, and as stated above, the story just kills replay value. When you think of an open world game where you can do whatever you want, you'd think of games like Dwarf Fortress or Kenshi, Literally any Paradox Game or even Cube World before it feel flat on its face and became a literally disaster, and in a way that's how I would compare Starbound as it is: Before it had a good premise, you could do whatever you want with no restrictions, but now it forces you to go through the same story no matter what, do the same exact things in order to progress it, and if you want to make another character? Tough luck, you gotta go through the same exact thing all over again. The modding scene doesn't exactly remedy this either: If you want to make it fun, remove the entire story. Some mods can do this but chances are it may break your game completely if you, say, skip the entire scripted intro. In fact, Frackin' Universe, an overhaul mod for this game, makes the progression even worse (not to undermine its content, it does add a lot to the game).

The last thing I'll say is that if you need a metric load of mods in order to make the game bearable, it isn't a good sandbox game. If your base game is good, mods can make the game into a new experience, but combine it with a game that has no replay value and it still becomes the same slog over and over again. If you're looking for a game that can give you hours of playablility, look elsewhere. Hell, look at any of the other games I've mentioned above and they will give you more bang for your buck than Starbound, because it just isn't worth it

TL;DR - Starbound used to be great in the Beta, as my hours have all been spent on there, but after the 1.0 Update it fell flat and its replay value went away with it. You can compare it alot with Cube World between its Alpha and its Beta. Look for a different game, because this one isn't worth the money

I got this game back while it was still in beta, which i believe was around two years ago. Clockwork Empires had the facinating concept of a Dwarf Fortress-esque colony builder with Cthullu Mythos hiding within the background, only ever rearing its head every-so-often.

Unfortunately, it was just a bore to play after awhile, as frequent bugs plagued the game as a whole. I uninstalled it and waited in the hopes that the 1.0 release would fix all said issues by then.

Oh man, was I mistaken.

The bugs are still there - once you reach 30 colonists you'll notice slowdown, and the more you get, the slower the game gets to the point that it will crash. Your colonists wont listen to you at times, sometimes they spawn in areas where they're practically isolated from the main group, causing them to slowly starve to death, enemies spawn randomly, the whole sha-bang.

Worst yet, though, is the fact that this game had been abandoned almost immediatly after the 1.0 release, meaning that these issues will never be fixed nor will there ever be new content coming out for it.

It's sad to say this, but its best to not buy this abandoned piece of programming, as it isn't worth spending 30+ dollars for an unfinished beta that's marketed as a finished product.
