Despite the fact that the game, you could say, made a splash and became well-known in certain circles, after completing it, I partly understand the reasons for its success. It features a decent storyline, stylish (though somewhat overused) aesthetics, and overall has its own unique style. However, the game leaves me with mixed feelings because I both like and dislike it at the same time. Perhaps the latter outweighs the former slightly, and I'll explain why.

I must note that this is my personal perception, and it's likely that most people who enjoyed the game would at least disagree with me. As I mentioned, the game has its strengths, such as a well-written story, style, and perhaps even its nonlinear narrative approach.

What I personally didn’t like was that the story itself didn’t feel unique to me. From the very first scene, where you’re forced to commit suicide for the sake of the entire spaceship, I realized it would be a blend of psychedelia with elements of Black Mirror. Later, it became clear that a pinch of “the disintegration of personality under harsh conditions” was also thrown into the mix.

These are interesting themes for a game’s story, but in my opinion, the narrative was too short to delve deeply into them (though it can’t be called superficial either). Additionally, I wasn’t particularly fond of the puzzles. They weren’t difficult or unclear, but rather just... strange. Often, I felt unsure of what the game wanted from me, but through trial and error (thanks in large part to the limited number of interactable objects), I’d stumble upon the correct solution and progress.

I was also somewhat put off by the overall atmosphere of the game. I struggled to empathize with any of the characters due to the excessive surrealism and psychedelia of the situation. On one hand, important plot points were presented in an intriguing way, but on the other hand, the story was so condensed into a short runtime that the experience felt somewhat muddled - like a fragmented dream.

I must say that I’m giving the game a negative review, but it’s more of a conflicted “yellow light” for me. This is more of an alternative perspective on the game, based on subjective impressions, rather than a critique or an attempt to dissuade anyone from playing or purchasing it.

What in the actual hell did I just play

Despite all the (intentional)graphical glitches and wild time skips, Mouthwashing has a strong clarity of vision. It seeks to explore a single idea and leaves everything else lying in the periphery, indistinct and implied. There's not many actual decisions to make once things start rolling, but that suits the theme just fine. After all, once big enough events are set in motion, there's nothing left to do but accept the consequences.
