Alan Wake's American Nightmare falls somewhere between a spin-off and a sequel. While it continues the story directly, it feels more like a spin-off in its overall tone and presentation.

Let's start with the story. It is decent, but when compared to the brilliance of the original Alan Wake, it falls short. The introduction of Mr. Scratch as an intriguing character adds some interest, but the overall concept lacks the depth and impact of the original game. Given the difference in scale between the two games, this discrepancy was somewhat expected. Nonetheless, considering its shorter length, the story is passable. However, my main disappointment lies in the change of the narrator. Alan Wake's narration, where we saw events from his perspective as he read and told the story, was a key factor in making the original game's storytelling so captivating. In American Nightmare, the narration is provided by a character from Night Springs, and while it's not necessarily bad, it lacks the emotional connection and immersion that Alan's voice lent to the experience. Nevertheless, the use of real actors in the cinematics is a commendable choice, with Alan Wake's actor delivering a solid performance. On the downside, the in-game supporting characters' dialogue with Alan feels unrealistic and somewhat disappointing.

On the gameplay front, there are definite improvements. Combat and movement have received substantial upgrades, making Alan more responsive and agile. The camera is better, and Alan no longer feels exhausted after running short distances, resulting in a smoother and more enjoyable experience. Additionally, the game offers a wider array of weapons and enemies, addressing a potential issue of lack of variety from the first game. However, while the enemy variations are appreciated, the overall combat feels lighter and less intense than the first game, primarily due to the lack of the original's dark and eerie atmosphere. American Nightmare has shifted its focus from survival horror to action-adventure, presenting a lighter thriller story. The element of surprise is diminished as enemies spawn in waves, and the tension from being stalked by the Taken is less present. Consequently, the game feels less chilling and more lighthearted, though still entertaining. Thanks to the improved combat and movement mechanics, taking on the Taken can be a fun experience. The addition of the Arcade mode is a welcome inclusion, enhancing the game's action-packed nature.

Regarding bugs, I encountered only one significant issue. The game occasionally fails to close properly, leaving a black screen after quitting. Without a second monitor and the task manager open, it becomes impossible to close the game. This can be frustrating for players without the necessary setup, leading them to restart or log out of their Windows account every time they want to exit the game.

For achievement hunters: the game includes 12 achievements, with several of them being missable and not the easiest to obtain. However, if you enjoy the gameplay, unlocking them can be quite fun. It certainly was an enjoyable experience for me.

It's evident that Alan Wake's American Nightmare was never intended to be a true sequel but rather a light, side-story spin-off that explores the character of Mr. Scratch while providing a bit of additional story. Despite this, there is room for improvement. While maintaining its short duration, the game could have retained more of the original atmosphere, genre, and darkness that made Alan Wake memorable. However, as a separate experience, it is genuinely enjoyable and highly recommended for any Alan Wake fan.

"Episode 4: Double Visions" of Back to the Future: The Game, while not the strongest in the series, still holds its own and delivers an enjoyable experience. When comparing it to the other three episodes, it might not stand out as much, but that doesn't mean it's a weak episode in its own right.

What sets "Double Visions" apart is its slightly slower pace in terms of story development. While the previous episodes were filled with thrilling twists and turns, this one takes a more contemplative approach, allowing the players to delve deeper into the characters and their emotions. While this change of pace may not be everyone's cup of tea, I found it to be a refreshing change of tone that added depth to the overall narrative.

The gameplay in this episode remains consistent with the series, providing fun and challenging puzzles that keep you engaged throughout. Though it may not introduce any groundbreaking mechanics or mind-bending riddles, it still manages to keep the adventure engaging and entertaining.

One aspect that remains consistently praiseworthy throughout the entire series is the attention to detail in the writing and the excellent voice acting. "Double Visions" continues to deliver authentic dialogue and witty exchanges between characters, making you feel like you're part of the Back to the Future universe.

Additionally, the developers continue to impress with their commitment to staying true to the source material. The attention to recreating the iconic settings of the movie trilogy is commendable and adds to the overall nostalgic experience.

While "Episode 4: Double Visions" might not have the same jaw-dropping moments as its predecessors, it still contributes significantly to the overarching story. It's a necessary stepping stone in the grand adventure that ties up loose ends and sets the stage for the grand finale.

In conclusion, "Episode 4: Double Visions" may not shine as brightly as the other episodes when compared directly, but it is by no means a weak installment. It maintains the charm, fun, and nostalgia of the series, providing an enjoyable and satisfying experience for fans of Back to the Future. As the journey unfolds, it becomes evident that each episode serves its purpose in building a cohesive and memorable story, making "Double Visions" an essential part of the overall adventure.

"Dark Room," Episode 4 of "Life is Strange," has proven to be the most emotionally charged and heart-wrenching installment thus far. In the first half of the game, I was enveloped in an overwhelming sense of sadness, to the point where I didn't even feel like engaging in exploration or continuing to play. There were moments when I simply stared at the monitor, lost in a sea of contemplation, so deeply engrossed in the narrative.

The episode's length felt longer than its predecessors, though I cannot say for certain, as I was completely engrossed in the experience, losing track of time. The emotional impact was profound, and I found myself with teary eyes during certain scenes, a feat only previously achieved by Telltale's "The Walking Dead."

For me, "Dark Room" stands as the pinnacle of the series so far. The narrative delved into the deepest emotions, and the storytelling mastery on display left me in awe. Each aspect of this episode was thoughtfully crafted, leaving a lasting impression.

The emotional rollercoaster of "Dark Room" has left an indelible mark, making it the most impactful and captivating installment yet. As I reflect on the journey so far, I am filled with gratitude for this unique and poignant experience. It has truly become one of my most treasured gaming experiences, and I eagerly anticipate what the last episode has in store.

There is a Remastered title for this game, which I highly suggest over this one. You can find it here.
My review for it is also here
.

For some reason you can't write reviews on the pages of the episodes two and three. So, this review is for the first three episodes of the game. The fourth and fifth episodes have their reviews on their respective Steam pages, since there they do allow reviews.

*Here is my review for the fourth episode, and here is for the fifth.

Embarking on the journey of "Life is Strange," I had little idea of what to expect, except that it would be an adventure game akin to Telltale's style, with choices that truly matter. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by every aspect of this game so far, leaving me utterly enamored. From the very beginning, I found myself falling in love with the characters, engrossed in the captivating story, and deeply moved by the emotional depth it offers. These feelings only intensified as I progressed through the first three episodes, and the conclusion of the third episode left me utterly speechless.

The characters in "Life is Strange" are beautifully developed, and their stories are filled with depth and complexity. Chloe and Max, in particular, have endeared themselves to me, and I feel a genuine empathy for them. The freedom to explore the world, interact with character hubs, and admire the atmospheric surroundings adds an immersive touch that I deeply appreciate.

What I find especially captivating is the game's unique take on the chaos theory, offering a fresh perspective to the narrative. Moreover, the ingenious rewind time gameplay mechanic is skillfully integrated, enhancing the overall experience.

As I journey through this remarkable game, I find myself engulfed in a truly exceptional and emotive adventure. The plethora of emotions it evokes is a testament to its storytelling prowess. I am genuinely moved, and there's nothing so far that I could possibly criticize.

This experience is shaping up to be truly unforgettable, and I firmly believe that "Life is Strange" will find its place among my all-time favorite games, if the upcoming episodes maintain the same level of brilliance. I am excited to continue this captivating journey and discover what lies ahead in the next chapters. "Life is Strange" has won my heart, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeply immersive, emotional, and thought-provoking gaming experience.

Later edit after beating the game
For achievement hunters: the game offers a total of 60 achievements, with many of them attainable during the normal playthrough. Additionally, the missable ones are relatively easy to unlock.
