Introduction
Hello!
I made this guide to help new players actually get good at the game. I've noticed people enjoy my other guides, but I also notice that a lot of people still aren't like, the best player in the world. So, hopefully this guide will help you with being like, the best player in the world.

This guide is not finished yet

Settings
Before we get into everything, you should configure your settings.
Let's start with Video/Audio.
These are my preferred Video/Audio settings, I'll explain what you should change.

The only things you should change is your FOV, and graphics:

Put your FOV to as high as it can go. You might think it's a little weird at first, but you'll soon look back at what default FOV looked like in disgust. However, if you are aiming from far away, don't forget you can always turn it to minimum to aim.

You should probably untoggle all of graphics settings. If you think it's cool enough and should stay, then keep it on, but it becomes much clearer to see with all 3 settings off.

Optional: In dark sections, you can turn your brightness to 2 and it helps. On certain devices, disabling v-sync can help with performance significantly.

That's pretty much it for Video/Audio. You can change anything else however you want, the rest of the settings is completely preference.

There's nothing super helpful to do in controls, you can just change controls whenever you want if you want to change your controls.

Now, to the Accessibility tab.
These are my preferred Accessibility settings, I'll explain what you should change.

This entire thing is mostly just preference, but I do recommend at least testing what it's like with all 3 visual settings on. The 3 visual settings are incredibly useful when on.
Basics on what you need to get good
To be good at White Knuckle, you have to pay the FEE:
Familiarity
Experimentation
Execution

Familiarity
Every horror game is scary on the first run through. But, when you know how everything works, it can be thrilling instead of scary.

Use the cheat console! Read guides! Study everything!
The game will be so much easier once you thoroughly check out every room, find all the good paths, find out how everything else works, it's just so easy.

Experimentation
When you are getting familiar with the game, you have to experiment. As of now, my guides don't cover every single aspect in the entire game, so you will have to do a lot of experimenting in White Knuckle to find things.

Use items a lot, see how you can manipulate aspects of the game, find hidden paths, there's a lot you can experiment and look around for.

Execution
Everything depends on how you do everything. You need a lot of confidence to do well in this game. You need to be creative. You don't have to be neat and composed to be good at this game, you just have to do things, and do it confidently.

Think there's a jump you could probably make? Try it! There are so many things you can do by just being confident and properly executing your actions. (idk if thats a grammatically correct statement hopefully it is)

You can practice these things easily by using the cheat console, which I have a guide on.

All of this is basic info you should know, the rest of this guide will be teaching you how to perfect the main part of this game, SPEED
Basic Speed
Things you need to know.
  • Learn the things in the above section.
  • DO NOT BE ENCUMBERED. You can have a maximum of 13 items before you get heavy.
  • Don't Panic.
  • Don't be scared to use items.
  • Climb jumping is one of the most important things you should do.
  • Paranoia can save your life.
  • Aim is more important in this game than any first person shooter game out there.
  • Always sprint.
  • You can press F1 for a timer and F3 for speed stats.
  • Sort your inventory. (Note: you can put things outside of the circle of your inventory)
  • Watching people speedrun the game can teach you a lot about the game.

Speed

Don't rub up against a wall.
When climbing upwards, you'll notice if you just slowly move yourself forward and upwards it's not very effective. If you use your movement keys in some way to separate yourself from the wall, you go a lot faster. Just move some way that isn't rubbing against the wall directly straight.

Get risky with climb jumps.
If there is a ladder or a straight upwards line of handholds (like in the start of campaign) just spam climb jumps while grabbing from hold to hold. To know if you're doing it fast enough, start a campaign, immediately run up to the handhold things in the center, and start climb jumping as fast as you can. You should have an ascent rate peak of at least 7 when starting out and immediately doing it. Remember that climb jumping as fast as you can is very helpful in many situations, but it can also be terrible in many others.

Yea that's really common, I think I have stuff relating to that in all of my guides that talk about the piton

I found another piece of tech useful, probs somewhat known but sometimes i skip hammering in pitons by quickly grabbing and jumping off of them

If I understand correctly, the tech you are referring to is called the handstand

One piece of "tech" I've found useful, at least early on when you are still in the silo and lack buffs, is that a lot of gaps where you are clearly meant to use items don't actually need them, and by grabbing a handhold/ladder and then letting yourself get as high as possible then jumping, you can usually reach the next handhold. You can do this a lot in those sewer sections where you need to climb up the runoff ledges, find some nearby door frames or lights, and you can hop up without needing to use the 1 piton places nearby.

Plus, with items, consider how this game is a marathon, not a sprint. Going steadily forward at any speed(for your skill level) is better than speeding but risking mistakes. You could climb up a path normally, but it's going to take time and effort(both IRL and in-game). If an item would let you skip part of a climb, you are saving all that time/effort for use later on.

also for some devices, turn off v sync can reduce frame drop.

Hey! One of the WR holders here. I'd say the best thing to do is play Chimney. Which you can find in the demo beta's
