All about Outbreak mode

Outbreak is a special zombie mode of Black Ops Cold War, which is a kind of ideological continuation of TranZit from Black Ops 2. Players travel across large maps from the Fireteam mode that have been influenced by the Dark Aether.

The main difference between Outbreak and the usual zombie mode formula is the changed progression: instead of moving «from round to round», it is «from task to task». The player is provided with the entire large location, which has both primary and secondary tasks, as well as other interesting events.

Mode variations


There were several variations of this mode in the history of Outbreak:
  • Standard (Endless)
  • Survival
  • 3 Region
  • Hallows' Eve / Outbreak Collapse



Outbreak Survival
It differs from the standard one in the following ways:
  • The player always starts the game with 1911, but retains the field modification
  • No health regeneration!
  • To regain health, the player must pick up food of varying degrees of «rarity» — the higher it is, the more health it returns
  • The mini-map, compass, main map, as well as the display of damage and health of zombies are disabled
  • The function of applying a weapon blueprints is disabled



3 Region
No different from the normal mode, except that the only choice offered in the third world is evacuation.

Available only in public lobbies.



Hallows' Eve / Outbreak Collapse
The Hallows' Eve mode has been in the game for the following times:
  • from October 19 to November 2, 2021
  • from October 7 to October 21, 2022
It was distinguished from the regular Outbreak by the following:
  • The player could choose one of two random maps on which all the action would take place
  • Zombies were much more aggressive and automatically aggro even at a distance
  • There was no main objective, and only a meeting with the Horde was an additional one
  • Every 2 minutes all zombies died and the world level increased by 1
  • If the player survived for 10 minutes, then after the next level increase, evacuation with a countdown will be available
  • Almost all zombies wore a Halloween pumpkin on their heads and were likely to drop it. From the pumpkin, the player could get a variety of bonuses - resources, equipment, cups, support, and more
After completing the usual support for the game, the developers added a similar mode called «Outbreak Collapse» to the game, which differs from «Hallows' Eve» only in the absence of themed pumpkins with rewards.

  • The task is to destroy powerful boss, who teleports after losing 1/3 of his maximum health.

  • The task is to accompany the monkey rover in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. While the player is nearby, all the zombies' attention is focused on him, otherwise - on the rover, which must be delivered safe.

  • Time limit — 200 seconds (3:20)
  • The task is to survive several waves of zombies while locked in a room

    Still Standing
    If no one on the team has down

  • Time limit — 5 minutes
  • The task is to pick up two canisters of ether and bring them to the rocket.

    Expert Courier
    If the player did not drop the canister after picking it up

  • There is no time limit
  • The task is to defend two landed missiles from zombie attacks, while killing those within the outlined zone

    Loud and Clear
    if the transmitters end up in very good condition (80% or more)

  • The time limit is a few minutes
  • The task is to get to two points of dark aether accumulation, wait for some time to fill the canisters, and then deliver these canisters to the rocket

    Shipshape
    If in the end the transport will be in very good condition (80% or more);
    Priority Shipping
    If a player delivers a charged canister in less than 2 minutes.
Additional tasks
In addition to the key task, there are many optional tasks on the location that can be easily tracked through a general map of the area:
  • Black Chest
  • Dragon Relic
  • Fury Crystal
  • Horde Patrol
  • Locked Golden Chest
  • Omega Supply Crate
  • Orda





When interacting with the black chest, the player will hear a mysterious voice asking to release it. To do this, it is necessary to destroy three key spheres that will be at a distance from the chest. By shooting at them, the player will lure them to him: the spheres deal damage upon contact, summon zombies, and then circle for a few seconds to repeat the process.

These keys cancel out PaP and support boosts. Shotguns are the best way to deal with them.

After destroying all three keys, the player will free the lost soul and receive other rewards, including a chalice and armor of various rarities — using the first item will give the weapon in your hands the power of Pack-a-Punch.

Also, in the event of a player's death within this world (when their health drops to 50 or below), this soul is able to kill all zombies nearby at intervals of several minutes.





Activation of this task will cost 500 points. The player has 30 seconds to kill as many regular zombies as possible within the ring of fire to sacrifice to the dragon.

The more victims, the better the reward. Progress can be tracked by the amount of ether in the side tanks. The approximate time is indicated by the orange line in the center of the device. During takeoff, the player will take damage from the exhaust fire.





After breaking the orange crystal, the player needs to find and destroy six clones in a minute. It is highly recommended to buy the Death Perception perk in advance. If successful, the last crystal will drop an aether tool — an item that increases the rarity of weapons by one level.





Interacting with the burnt body of the previous group, a stronger boss will appear nearby, which caused the death of the previous team. The task is very simple - to destroy the key enemy or enemies, depending on which company is there:
  • reinforced Megaton with several plague hounds
  • a reinforced Red Soldier with several Hellhounds
  • two Manglers with two Tempests
For the destruction of the (last) key enemy, the game will give a «Random Perk» power-up





Interacting with a large golden chest, the player summons a crowd of zombies, as well as several mini-bosses and a boss.

After destroying them all, the player can open the chest to get extra points, as well as pick up the chest's contents. The «Full Power» power-up will definitely appear, which will give a +1 charge to the field modification.





Sometimes an Omega helicopter appears on the map, and when the Requiem strike team approaches, it will immediately try to fly away. The team can either ignore this vehicle or destroy it.

After the helicopter is destroyed, a crate will be dropped by parachute, from which the player can collect a solid amount of resources, as well as random support.





This unique enemy could only be encountered in «Firebase Z», and now it appears in the second world of Outbreak. In addition to the usual hound attack, this creature uses its left arm and legs more actively.

If the player tries to attack this creature from a distance, it will regenerate due to the etheric dust near which it tramples.

After dying, the Horde drops very valuable rewards - weapons of high rarity, wonder weapons, as well as other items (such as an aether tool).

What do you need to know about Aethereal orbs?
  • There is a possibility that it will not appear in the first world.

Almost every map (except Collateral) has one or more fishing spots available. Using a free fishing rod, the player can pull out a variety of items - from an armor plate with resources to perks with wonder weapons. And sometimes even a shoe, which is a mimic.

In total, you can fish three times near each point.

By activating the radio, the player will provoke the appearance of a crowd of zombies, after the destruction of which the device will start to emit a specific signal.

To better memorize the type of signal, turn on subtitles.

Then you need to find three amplifiers nearby and tune them to the same frequency as the radio. Sometimes switching also causes a zombie spawn.

After all three amplifiers are correctly tuned, the player just needs to return to the radio to get their reward - 800 points, a cassette with random music and the same music played from the radio.

Decompressive Isotopic Estrangement Machine
Sometimes a player may receive a regular model of the D.I.E. Shockwave wonder weapon as a reward/drop. In order to use its modification, the player must find the appropriate chest in a particular world:

D.I.E. NOVA-5 — Golova




D.I.E. Thermophasic — Ruka




Grapple Gun
Tactical equipment available only in Outbreak mode. Allows the player to pull himself up to a distance of no more than 30 meters.

As a drop, it provides 5 uses, with a maximum of 10 possible.





Demented Echo

The Demented Echo is an enemy that promises big problems when hunted down. It pops out of a mysterious box if the player gets Ray Gun from it on the map «Die Maschine».

Features of this creature:
  • Only available as an enemy in Outbreak
  • Appears only from the second world
  • Appears only once per location
  • Invulnerable to negative effects (stun, frostbite, decoy)
  • Neutralizes critical damage and boosts due to PaP
  • Does not appear on the mini-map
  • Not visible through thermal imaging
  • Cannot be seen through walls when using the «Death Perception» perk
  • Does not emit characteristic sounds at rest
  • It can be identified by its characteristic emitted light, which can sometimes shine through walls. It can be found in the corner of a building or at the end of a corridor.



This enemy is not dangerous in itself - if it detects the player or deals damage, the Echo will instantly aim and attack. Regardless of the distance, the offender will have about 2-3 seconds before the enemy has time to touch him.

In case of failure, when the player is touched, Echo becomes invulnerable, emitting a special scream, after which it disappears with a characteristic flash. A crowd of zombies will instantly appear nearby, including special and/or elite enemies (depending on the world level).

Special Achievements
There are two business cards associated with this enemy:
  • "Unshakable" (level 180 / Season 3) - survive 5 ambushes from the Demented Echo
  • "Restful spirit" - kill 10 Demented Echoes before they ambush you

    Hush
    If you successfully destroy the Demented Echo before it ambushes you

How to find this Demented Echo?

As mentioned earlier, it can be found only starting from world №2 and only in a single unit per map. In case of failure, the player will have to try again by teleporting to the next world.
