Horrors from the Hive

Description
Adds a new civilization of mounstrous insects that can't be negotiated with and will invade you often if they can.

The hive horrors are similar to ants, having the same caste structure, but of great size. Most of them, the workers and soldiers, are relativily small creatures, no more dangerous than a wild bull or something, but they make up for it in numbers. Meanwhile, their much rarer drones are absolute beasts, requiring a strong defense to defeat. They also fly. Meanwhile the queens are absurdly dangerous, but very rare and incredibly slow.

Their civilization is simple, as befits mostly mindless bugs. They will come out of a fortress in the swamp and start building settlements all around it, and if they find someone elses settlements, almost certainly attack it. If they conquer it, they'll begin spreadding from there, beggining their endless expansion. Their leadership is composed of a queen and three drones that she sends to attack others in her name.

Overall these creatures may not be that dangerous to your fortress due to their lack of armor but they are powerful monsters that just wont stop invading and can still give you hell once they get to you. In world generation they are a coin flip. They may stay in their lands and fail to do much harm, or they can snowball out of control and raze an entire corner of the map, destroying civilizations all over. Because of this, they are capped to one civilization total.

So, install this mod if you like the idea of facing wave after wave of horse sized bugs coming to kill you, if the challenge of fighting back against them sounds interesting, or if you like the idea of goblins getting eaten by ants.

They're supposed to be stronger than an average creature to compensate for their lack of armor and weapons but not enough that 4 workers can tear through a somewhat well equipped and trained squad. Maybe there were some soldiers among them? Those are meant to be tough if you don't have decent armor.

@Ya Boi Sheev are the worker thieves supposed to be terrifying? 3-4 of them just tore their way through my front door squad

It's not based on anything in particular. I just started experimenting with the idea of creating gigantic mutant ants as enemies, and then figured out that I could make them into a civilization and have them siege the player constantly.

was this based on the old Hivemind Wasp civilization from Ye'Ol Masterwork?

After too many hours trying to replicate JonasIV's bug I haven't been able to do it. In my game the ambushes work fine and they don't die until I kill them. I'm going to assume your issue is the goblins killing them as soon as they spawn or some bizarre dwarf fortress wizardry that's not really my mod's fault.

If it happens to someone else please give me more details so I can try to replicate it and fix it again.

the hive horrors in my game instantly die the moment they enter the map, well the sieges do atleast, hive horror thieves work just fine, but when its time for a siege, they enter with the goblins and instantly drop dead on the ground

Ok, so I checked and only the two big castes are intelligent (shame on me for not remembering), the workers and soldiers are basically animals, it doesn't cause issues cause they can't have any position, but maybe there's some shenanigans I never noticed if they join another civ (shouldn't happen often). I've actually gotten the dwarves to butcher them, so there's a reward for weathering the constant invasions. Guess I never looked at the food while testing them.

Now that I have the idea I think I'll experiment a little with giving them some reward other than meat.

They can't be butchered or used for anything because they're sentient, otherwise they couldn't work as a civilization. If you play as a modded civ that's accepts cannibalism you could maybe turn them into an easy food source though.
