Description
Psionics Overhaul V3 - Hyperspecialization Rebalance

Abstract
This mod is a plugin/rebalance for Kyuubicle's fun Psionics Overhaul mod. It introduces seven small in scale Psionic classes, each class specializes in one specific field.

Overview
Psionics Overhaul V3 is a fun a mod, but after playing it for a while, this author felt that it provides a bit too much of a power creep - every psionically gifted soldier gains access to a lot of powerful psionic skills, and becomes a monster. Playing with the amazing Psionics Ex Machina mod enlightened me to the solution: increasing the variety of psionic abilities, and limiting the number of psionics ability each soldier can get. However, due to various reasons it is more convenient for this author to use the Psionics Overhaul method over the PEXM method, and hence this mod was created.

It introduces eight Psionic classes for Psionics Overhaul. Each such class has exactly five abilities, all focusing on one field of psionics. This mod also disables all the other psi classes for Psionics Overhaul (but NOT dedicated psionic classes like the base game Psi Operative), because it doesn't make sense to have those huge psionic classes together with these small five ability specs. For detailed information about the new Psionic classes, see Appendix A. If the reader is not familiar with Psionics Overhaul, then please refer to the mod page.

The goal is to achieve the following:
  • Reduced power creep from having less psionic abilities per soldier.
  • The "capstones" of psionic powers are not present here at all (no Null Lance, Void Rift, Solace, Domination...).
  • Interesting interactions between the solider class and the psi-class.

Due to the more random nature of these Psionic classes and their limited scale, the chance for a soldier to be gifted is increased to 33%.

This sucks, now psi is super weak! I want my Domination!

Configuration
This mod consists entirely of config. If you had a spare afternoon, you could recreate it yourself. XComLatentPsionics.ini has instructions on how to enable the original Psi classes from Psi Overhaul mod or other plugins to it.

Compatibility
This mod is compatible with whatever Psionics Overhaul is compatible with, see the references therein. As explained, it is discouraged, but not impossible, to use this mod with other plugins to Psionics Overhaul.

Required Mods
  • Psionics Overhaul V3 - duh.
  • Mitzruti Perk Pack - necessary, most abilities come from there.
  • More Psi Abilities - uses several abilities from it.
  • Shadow Ops - uses exactly one ability from it. You may ignore it, and then it will be missing, or use Shadow Ops Begone to remove the classes and GTS projects.
  • LW2 Perks - can be replaced with LW 2 Classes and Perks. Only one ability is used, I think, so if you skip it it shouldn't hurt too much.
  • Stormrider - again, one ability is used, so you can skip and it wouldn't be too bad.
  • Proficiency Classes - again, one or two abilities is used from it.
  • ABB Perk Pack - again, one ability is used.
  • You may use a mod like Disable Any Class to prevent random promotions to the classes introduced by the prerequisites for this mod.

Known Issues
  • If you don't have all the requirements, expect some classes to have less than 5 abilities (duh).

Acknowledgements
The author is grateful to the following for their assistance in the mod:
Kyuubicle - for the Psionics Overhaul V3 mod, which this is a plug-in to.
Mitzruti - for the wonderful perk pack.
Iridar - for More Psi Abilities, and the Stormrider abilities.
Favid, Deadput - for LW2 classes and perk packs.
Favid again - for Shadow Ops classes.
Kiruka - for ABB Perk Pack, and the Prerequisites Get Arounder.
shiremct - for the abilities from the Proficiency class pack.
RustyDios - for nothing one black pixel on 64x64 empty canvas.
As usual, the author is grateful to the members of the MEME Discord server for useful discussions and continued emotional support.
The author would also like to mention JFD, who had a very funny mod with a similar name for Civ5 :)

oh wow, it's that simple. For some reason I was convinced it was A Better Barracks Perk Pack ability. Thank you very much for this investigation, I'll add it right away.

So I did some troubleshooting; started a new file with only BalanceGoldPrime++ and its dependencies installed, console'd in the psilab, and got myself a supersensory. Blend still does not appear for me. I checked my configs, and F_Blend is right there at supersensory rank 1.

On a hunch, given the perk's internal name, I enabled Extended Perk Pack by Favid, and sure enough, that solved the issue. Should be as simple a fix as adding EPP to your list of dependencies. Maybe it was a transitive dependency when you first published this mod, but it isn't now. Hope this has helped!

I did figure it may be difficult or impossible to implement, and like I said it's a quality mod in its current state. Natural probability distribution will eliminate the need for a forced deck in most cases anyway, even more so the larger your barracks gets. Forcing psi class diversity isn't about to make or break the quality of this mod.

Thank you for the comments! I'll be on the lookout for that Blend issue, but as of right now I can't possibly know what this is about.
About your suggestion - that is a great suggestion, but I'm not sure if I can enable this. After all, this mod is just configs, if Psi Overhaul V3 itself supports it, then I'll check if I can make it so, and if not, then I can't do anything about it.
Just for reference, here is my psi class distribution in my current campaign:
Mentalist - 3
Psi Tech - 2
Psitonomy - 2
Supersensory, Elementalist, Reality Warper - 1
Necromancer - 0
total 10 psionics out of 53 soldiers.

Probably-user-error aside, I've enjoyed the mod. It has an amalgamation class sort of effect where no two soldiers are alike (probably). My combat engineer necromancer stands apart from other CEs, and each supersensory soldier plays differently from others of different base classes.
Perhaps my one recommendation would be to enable some sort of forced deck functionality, or other probability-bending system. Of 20 soldiers I rolled 7 psi ops (so, as expected), but 4 of them were supersensory. If it's not already implemented, it would be nice if there was something in the backend forcing/encouraging variety, so you can expect to actually experience most of the mod's content in a given campaign.
That's just a nitpick though. This is probably my favorite psionics system in xcom 2 that I've played. Thanks for making and sharing it ♥

Bizarre. I double-checked I had the dependencies installed and enabled, and I didn't touch any configs. I wouldn't think another mod would be interfering by accident, but that must be it if all is well on your end. I'm far from an expert.

@Baked Valkyrie - I don't know, Blend appears for my soldier in the ability. I think it's from A Better Barracks. I'm not sure what the problem is but it might be on your end.

Not sure what this is about, I'm pretty sure I had blend on the soldier just fine, but I'll take a look again at some point later to verify.
Harmonic Flair 24 Aug, 2023 @ 12:21pm
My supersensory does not have blend (or any ability) at rank 2. I can't find the skill in any of the dependencies' perk lists, so an update to one of them may have removed it?
