Editing to reflect an update from the devs on 9-8-23: They really did it. They actually put a skill compendium in the game. The first of this genre to do it in full. I truly can't believe it, and am incredibly excited for this. They've shattered the meta of these survivor games. Truly, this gem is now fully cut and ready for sale. And the team is only planning to polish it even further. Good on them for doing that for this fantastic game!

I really want to recommend this game because it's an absolute gem. The reason I can't, is because there is no way to know how many skills are in this game. I want to know what skill belongs to what types before I go on a run so I can theory craft and create builds or try new things out that I haven't before. Only way to do that? Either take about 500 screenshots of every single skill and flip through that insanely large album of photos or memorize every single skill and typing. This information is all in the game already because it's there on the skill select screen.

Is it really so hard to let us see what skills exist and what categories they belong to? That's literally all this game needs to set itself apart because no games in this genre do it, which is INSANE.

Just saw this game got a 1.0 release, and tons of stuff has changed. I'm happy to actually make this review positive now!

They refined the gameplay loop, the tool tips actually help you understand what is going on, what stats do - or what they effect, and thank heavens they made it so you can actually see what abilities do. Outrageously strong work, and I'm happy to visit this 1.0 release with fresh eyes and new enjoyment.

This game has all the polish it needed to be a great, and I think it'll be able to cement a firm place in the genre with it's graphic style, game loop, and progression!

Survivor games are all similar, trying to find variety. This is a great game in the genre, and arguably hits all the marks I could ask for. I actually really enjoy it, have spent plenty of time in it, and plan to spend more.

So why am I not recommending it? Because, like every single other game in this genre save one, there is nowhere I can go to look at what the abilities are. What they do. How they work. Know what game does allow you to at least get a snippet about the ability? Vampire Survivors. Literally the first game of this genre to make it huge and explode, and no one can copy that super SIMPLE aspect? Come on guys. Just give us a little lore book where you let us look at each ability, what type of damage it is, etc. All that info is ALREADY in the game because you programmed it to work with those specifications. Let us plan our builds before-hand. I shouldn't have to go on a deep-dive through google to know which abilities are magical and which are physical.

What makes this game great is the ability to pop it open, play a round for 10 minutes and make great progress on challenges for progression, and close it. Easy and quick sessions, classic reverse bullet hell gameplay, fair amounts of customization. If this is in a bundle and you can shave a dollar or two off the price it's an easy recommendation.

Only issues that I've seen is the translations are kinda meh, but not to the point of impacting gameplay.

Updating to reflect some of the updates from the dev as of 8-24-23, old review still below:

I still can't bring myself to recommend this DLC. The dev has, silently without making it known, fixed the largest issue which was the inability to heal during your run, arguably the largest bug that has ever existed in this game and I have no idea how it made it past even the shortest of QC sessions. But, it's fixed which is fantastic and I applaud the dev for their effort.

Past that, we're back in the same place as we were in the original game, and that's that resources aren't spawning properly nor are blueprints. If you're trying to collect and buy everything, you just physically can't. It's disappointing watching this issue on repeat from the base game. If wall world ever has more DLC, I will be avoiding it because I'm just not willing to put up with these constant and consistent issues. As per my recommendation for this, and all future DLC, I suggest steering clear. Sad to have to watch this disappear from my 100% completion list, but the practices of the dev make this just plain impossible.

Dev releases DLC with game breaking bugs and won’t address them or at least acknowledge they exist and will be worked on. Don’t waste your time or your money. Skip this DLC if you have the game. Skip the bug filled game if you haven’t already.

Listen, I understand I have a fair amount of hours in this game, and I'm planning to 100% it because it is 'playable'.

Here's the problem:

The game is broken.
I can't even begin to count the number of times I've had a move available, and the game does not allow me to make the move that would allow me to continue playing. What does it allow me to do though? It WILL let me use spells or consumables to make the legal move I saw and was not allowed to make.

I will say, it's a fun enough game when you ignore this fact. I'm having enough fun to want to finish it out despite that.

But I just can't recommend it because it will constantly and consistently not allow you to make legal and proper moves. If you're ok with the game purposely screwing you over, then it's a great time! But, if you get frustrated at games not working as they're intended, I'd say avoid it. If you pick it up and can get past the glaring issue, it's definitely got a good chunk of time you can have fun with it for.

Don't add achievements if all you're going to do is reset them.

Choo Choo Survivors combines two things I love, Trains and 'Bullet-Heaven' games.

While I describe this game as simple, it's just plain fun. There's no super intricate behind the scenes theorycrafting. You play, you upgrade, you have fun. Gain some meta progression, play the harder difficulty, try again.

I assume the developer is planning to update it with more content in the future, but even if they didn't, it's still a very complete experience currently, and tons of fun!

For less than $3, it's a steal!

It's not bad because it's abandoned, it's bad because the developer abandoned it without addressing impossible achievements.

Leaving a do not recommend because the developer is busy creating DLC and producing extra content for the main game, Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes. Oh, wait, the game isn't even out yet, yet they're developing DLC? Weird.
