Fantastic and well-polished take on Vampire Survivors. Now with idols to look up to and a house building minigame.

I played multiple runs and was never excited or attentive towards any card rewards. I keep turning down random pulls because I need to craft very particular synergies to success where I can't make suboptimal deck work even slightly, even at Madness 0. The Last Spell has a much smoother progression with the meta stuff (you start on easier maps you can beat with basically no progression at all, and the last two maps are difficult even with a full set) and Solasta feels like a much better co-op RPG experience in general.

The primary reason I recommend this game in spades is the large paradigm shift and wide acceptance of playstyles that came about around the 1.4 update. A lot has been added in recent years for people who just want to make pretty builds and not deal with swarms of enemies and powerful bosses, as well as even higher difficulties for those who can beat Expert Mode in their sleep. The Labor of Love update made making builds for fun even more appealing with the addition of various tools, items and a new mini-biome that dramatically increases the range of both aesthetic and functional builds you can make.

Although lacking a third dimension like Minecraft, Terraria has a number of advantages for build designing, including the wide ranges of furniture (where Minecraft still only has a very minimal selection of interior decoration) and the ability to paint blocks drastically increasing the variety of styles and creative uses you can make (my ice fortress looking really great with cyan painted skyware items).

If you care about gameplay, it's a vastly divergent style of play. Minecraft has you deal with mobs and resource acquisition in a streamlined, complex way with the vast amount of redstone contraptions similar to Factorio. Terraria is more about a progression in power through new weapons and gear much like a Metroidvania type of game.

If I wrote this during 1.3 or earlier, I don't think I would've given this game as much praise as I do now.

A pretty nifty incremental game that is definitely engaging and not just a simple waiting thing like most idles. After a bit more than nine hours I'm close to the endgame at the time of writing this review. So it's not a massive timesink like many an idle game but definitely worth spending half a day straight pondering your orb.

Here's some deck ideas for those of you who enjoy an interactive and deep card game and want to make people who never looked at a Yugioh card since 2005 cry for easy ranked wins:

Subterror: They love that you can just set pass right? Flip your set cards to negate your opponent's plays and you even get to keep them. Umastryx will banish everything they own, Fiendess says no to effects, Nemesis Archer makes their attempts at stalling futile. Final Battle is one hell of a drug.

Crystron: Do you know how those boomers complain about how you make extremely long combos on your turn? How about you make extremely long combos on *their* turn? Just Halqifibrax alone can let you taste this, especially if you have I:P Masquarena as well.

Endymion: Takes a bit to get the combos down, but you make long summon chains that end on 4-5 negates where the texts on your cards are so long that your opponent envies aphasic people. Mighty Master is a boardwipe and a negate, Reflection extends and removes simultaneously, Astrograph Sorcerer means that destroying your cards gives you searches, Electrumite is a ridiculous consistency tool and extender... what can I say other than "Pend Best Deck"?

Gren Maju: Because it's funny to just Normal Summon a monster that just has 7200 ATK, or even way more than that. Remind people at how old this card actually is.

Gem-Knights: Take a look at Lady Lapis Lazuli. Also take a look at Master Diamond. They don't get frustrated at your negates going second if they don't even get a turn to begin with. Gem Knight Fusion is so easy to recycle.

A promising tactical Roguelike with a fairly interesting resource system. You can place new mechs at any time - even during combat - but there is an increasing cost for each part currently out, which rewards diverse builds. There is also some meta progression, albeit not in an overwhelmingly strong fashion.

Keep holding out until full release!

On the one hand, the game has a decent art style, charming writing and there's a decent amount of thought in placing your classrooms and deciding how many refectories, dormitories etc. you need, especially to help keep your upper floors to use.

However, there's very little that will actually require you to look at your students. Lower tier futures provide immediate resources to kickstart your early academy while you farm long-term benefits, so even Dumb Deaf bullies will not be a concern for you. For Curriculum, just pick the ones with easy requirements (anything with 12/20 required students) and you barely even need houses anymore - just get one with strong bonuses like Jack-of-all-trades, Athletic or Popular and throw all of your students there.

While splitting for different specialties seems appealing, you should at most only focus a house on it if you need a more difficult curriculum. The best future path - Thaumaturge - requires your students to know all schools of magic.

I also noticed that needs management is very much not punishing. All that happens is that the affected person will get themselves a break if they're low. One of my teachers went to 0 health and continued to get mauled by orcs yet was completely fine just afterwards.

Overall, despite my non-recommendation, it's still a decent game to play casually, it's just not a game for if you really like in-depth management or complex optimizations.

I just drank 1000 sodas in about ten minutes. And I don't even know if my character was male, female or a different option.
