Imagine Dark Souls with really bad hit boxes and it takes literally 20 mins or more to kill anything. On top of that add all the worst excesses of Japanese storytelling, item management and UI design.

The fanaticism of the core audience is a direct result of sunk-cost bias and the obfuscation of fundamentally flawed gameplay by provoking the brain with soul crushing grind.

The art design of the monsters and levels looks really good though, even if it is tainted by the garish NPCs and PC.

This is an example of a game that makes me wish that steam's reviews were not the yes/no binary.

If you just want to map paint with a new, smooth engine using typical paradox combat, this game is for you. If not...

Its like EU3: a blobby, gamey nightmare that has no relationship to history other than the names and the maps; a promise unfulfilled. A game where the Ottomans cannot conquer Constantinople because of vague and irrational ideas of "balance." ffs I'm even kite / baiting the enemy and stack wiping him like EU3, even though they chose to include the strange shattered retreat mechanic.

This game needs A LOT of work in order to shape up into a game about antiquity, and sadly that is probably going to mean an additional $80 - $120 of DLC. The fact that this has day-1-DLC is a bad omen for things to come.

Here's to hoping that the initial patch cycle can shape this thing up, because it really does have potential. I have my doubts that it will be anything other than "insert $50 for Rome and Carthage" and "insert $50 for Persia."

An absolute classic with gameplay mechanics that far outdo the later entries in the series.

Very difficult but extremely fun with great replay value.

What was once Paradox's most accessible title has become its most tedious and time consuming slog. In addition, fundemental and nesessary mechanics in the game are chopped up into a bunch of DLC and it falls flat on its face without some of them installed, so be prepared to spend 50 dollars or get a far worse experience.

Its a bland shooter with light RPG elements. If you were looking for the Fallout experience, try again. Very, very little replay value.

The best civ game since civ 4.

2.0 fundementally ruined the game and made it a boring slog. I wouldn't recommend it to an enemy.

An extremely bland grind that fails as a simulator and as a game.

The most in-depth and immersive EU style game ever made. A game of progress and peace, economy and industry, where war is dangerous and expensive.

Possibly the only paradox game that doesnt boil down to world conquests and map painting.
