Update 2025:

So last month we got the 2.2 update, which added quite a bit for customization, specifically for the V character creator and for cars, while also adding some odds and ends to spruce up the game. I've especially enjoyed hunting about for the new secrets hidden around Night City.

The game right now is in it's most complete and polished state - I can fully say that the game today finally measures up to the vision that CDPR had for the game years ago. The Phantom Liberty expansion does exactly what it needed to, by adding more excellent storytelling, exploration and gameplay. Systems gamewide have been overhauled substantially to mold and shape the game into something that is truly special. While I have felt this way about the game from release, I think that CP77 is finally in a place where it can be truly considered an artful and impactful masterpiece, and one of the finest examples of both the RPG and cyberpunk genres.

The best part is that there is still more Cyberpunk to come. CDPR has a sequel in the works, currently just known as Project Orion (there are non-game projects in the works as well, including a new anime series in the same vein as Edgerunners). That would have been unthinkable at release, when the game was being lambasted by nearly everyone. There are also more updates being considered by the outside team that gave us the 2.2 update, meaning we could have even more customization options and who knows what else. Even if we don't get anything further, I've greatly enjoyed the ride with CP77, and I'm very happy that CDPR didn't cut and run after launch. They dug in, they worked hard to turn this ship around, and they pulled out the kind of legendary comeback story that street mercs would tell each other over drinks at the Afterlife. Excellent job, chooms.

Update 2022:

It's been nearly 2 years since release, and there's some new things on the horizon finally. CDPR has just announced a complete overhaul for the police system and car combat. These were some of the games weakest areas, so improving them would be a huge plus. Time will tell if CDPR can pull it off.

The "free DLC" that was promised has slowly been trickling into the game over the past year, with some new outfits, cars, weapons, and even apartments making their way in. These will likely continue to be added for some time. There have also been numerous additions to the city itself for players to find, as well as a balancing pass for combat and weapons, a transmog system for outfits, and the usual bugfixing in all areas of the game.

CDPR has also announced a new expansion for 2023, Phantom Liberty, which will add a whole new area to Night City, along with a new campaign for V that will include new weapons, cars, outfits, etc. If the scope of Phantom Liberty is similar to the Blood and Wine expansion for Witcher 3, this should add quite a bit of new high-quality content to CP77.

My one big criticism is that Phantom Liberty has been confirmed to be the only expansion for CP77. After its release, CDPR will be reallocating resources to the upcoming new Witcher games currently in development. This means that CP77 will not be getting both of the 2 expansions that we were promised prior to launch. I really hope that CDPR takes this opportunity to make it count.

Update 2021:

Welp, I gotta admit, I'm a bit disappointed in CDPR. It's great that the game is stable and playable for almost everyone, and has been for a while. Since release I have played through the game twice without any major issues. But it's been almost a year since release, and pretty much all that's been done is bug fixes. The only new content that's been added is a new vehicle, an alt appearance for Johnny, and two jackets - part of the cascade of "free DLC" that was promised to be doled out all year long.

That promise ended up on the backburner in lieu of the next-gen update for consoles, but as of October 2021 CDPR announced they aren't releasing any more updates until 2022, including the aforementioned console update. I don't know what all has changed within CDPR between The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, but they aren't the same company anymore. They over-promise and under-deliver. Despite that, I keep hoping that they'll right this ship and sort out this mess they made.

Original Review 2020:

Lets get the obvious part out of the way. Yes, there are currently a lot of bugs and performance issues. No, they don't affect everyone equally - console has the most problems - for PC, older hardware seems to struggle much more. I personally haven't had many issues at all. But CDPR has been very transparent about the problems, and has put out a hotfix a day and a half after release, with more on the way. Due to their history with their other games, I'm pretty confident in their ability to patch out the issues this game has.

Onto the good: CP77 is a *very* good game. The world-building is top notch, the story is compelling and emotional, and the game systems are an interesting mix of the best parts of modern open-world titles. I fell in love with this game and its characters, and connected with it on a deeply personal level. At its core right now, I feel that CP77 is a flawed masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless. If you're an RPG fan, don't miss out on this.
