Spent dozens of hours trying to find the magic of this glacially slow base builder, but there is no magic in the formulaic construction of martian living domes. Two factors slow the game down: All the construction is done through slow workers, who only carry one item at a time (with infuriating pathing). And, the interior dome configuration can only be done after that resource-expensive dome is finally constructed. That makes the steps take many hours of boring gametime: finding water, grading terrain, hauling 6+ days of concrete, and setting up the oxygen and power buildings... all to discover that it is two hex spaces too close to the metal extractor, will get super dusty, and need extra maintaining. Even though that kind of basebuilding is normally enjoyable to me, in Surviving Mars, there are no interesting decisions to be made along the way. It's by the numbers, and there is no sense of fulfillment once it is done.

Really enjoyed this adventure - exploration game experience. Simple and charming... it took me 2.6 hours to complete the basic story, but I skipped over two major points and the fish collection. That's reason to revisit the game again, soon!

I took a merry jaunt on an Ubuntu Linux desktop computer, with a gamepad controller. I had no technical issues.

Early Access Review
Having a blast with this game. The gameplay is really fleshed-out, so it is hard to believe it is still in Early Access. The user interface and tutorial information seems complete. It is fun making the production chains, and the artwork is beautiful - even down to the conveyor belts at night. The game is slow-paced, and after 50+ hours, I am still trapped in my home solar system. It's a great, chill base-building game, with no time-challenges, dexterity challenges, enemies, or even much puzzle solving.

I created a planet-wide factory on an Ubuntu Linux desktop computer, with Steam's Proton compatibility software. The game requires a lot of computing power, and my system sometimes had trouble handling the graphics while flying between planets. Otherwise, I had no other technical issues. Really happy with this purchase, and I feel this is totally worth the price, for those who want to tinker on virtual machines.

The writing is not as punchy as it could be, and there are flashing indicators of advancement, on every other page of text. The Lovecraftian elements do not show up until after many hours of reading, with flat, forgettable characters. Hopefully the developers tighten up their writing in the second game, and put in some user interface improvements.

Played on an Ubuntu Linux desktop, where the Steam Cloud feature does not work.

Fantastic recreation of one of my favorite games. The improved graphics and voice-overs makes the game so much more approachable. I highly recommend this game, even if you have no experience with old games like this one. Some of the mechanics are cumbersome (using skills, attributes, equipment, and NPC hiring are not intuitive and there is a little bit of typing), but the story and especially gameplay are better than most RPGs that I try these days. I hope that I am not looking back with rose-colored glasses.

Is it worth the full $15 ? I think so, but especially so if you want to see the origins of the Fallout Series and have the patience for boomer-era gameplay.

I played the game for a short bit with Steam's Proton compatibility software, on an Ubuntu Linux desktop. The steam store says that it has partial gamepad support, but I cannot see how that could be true. This game requires the keyboard and it can even be played without a mouse - except for the main menu.

Very puzzle-y game that is made difficult with the power resource requirement used for upgrades. When you try to upgrade the power machines, with your entire reserve of power resource, you are vulnerable to losing the game until the machine can replace the power resource reserve. Then, after losing, you restart the game in the exact same way, over and over. That feels chance-y and not fun. I played four hours, seeing the same screen, through the entire time. On the Steam Store, there are couple screenshots that I had never seen.

Learned to throw my human livestock into the bioreactor on an Ubuntu Linux desktop. The gamepad and mouse worked as a controller without issue, but the keyboard lacked some function to be used independently of the mouse.

Short, but well worth the full-price. Lots of visual-novel-type narrative, but it is well-written and interesting.
Played on an ubuntu linux desktop, with a keyboard-mouse control and also tried a gamepad controller.
I had no technical issue.

Only took a half-hour to complete the puzzles and get all the achievements, but it is wholesome, good quality, and replayable with a friend in co-op mode. For the price, I recommend trying it out, especially if you have not seen other Sokpop games, such as Temple of Robobo.

Played with Steam's Proton compatibility software, on Ubuntu Linux, with an xbox-type gamepad. I did not have any technical difficulties.
