This is a sci fi short story contained in a game. You will finish it in an evening, and you'll probably be looking forward to the next part. The aesthetic is excellent; a mix of CRT/analog and modern design, glitching out against each other to a synthwave soundtrack.

Don't expect a lot of "game" out of it, it is placed just over the boundary of game and interactive movie by its small amount of golf course elements. I recommend ignoring the "hack course" option when it appears; this isn't a path to something else as you might think, it's just a difficulty skip. That said, its presence shows the design intent here. You are meant to ride through this story in a walking simulator way, not stumble against its pieces. Don't worry that you're missing anything if you just click a lot and hack the courses, the golf really isn't the point. Maybe the only knock I have on this as it is would be that the course skipping is a little too aggressive, and they make an effort to tell you exactly what you should do in each course despite the onscreen hints within the course being enough.

A game where you can only squeeze egg

The distilled essence of roguelikes and card games. The feeling of "am I really gonna go down like this, with this setup", but purified. No dressing or setting. Terribly good.

This game is good whether you just want to get in and mess up some bugs or get very, very serious about tactics. Just be sure which you want to do in any given session and set difficulty accordingly.

Here's hoping that all other Hypnospace spinoffs go this far afield.

The original is one of my favorite games ever and this is more of that.
Loop it over and over, tune your excessive guns to ever wilder heights.

This is like if someone decided to create a Castlevania themed Gauntlet game, but sort of stopped halfway through, played a bunch of Jets and Guns, and decided that's what they wanted.

If you do not know if you like a Dark Souls, this is worth a try. All the characteristic elements of a Dark Souls are on offer, but do not be afraid of its reputation. Most notably, there is always something to do even if you are confronted with something that seems too nasty for you right now. Go off and act like this was Breath of the Wild, and you will be rewarded with something that was worth seeing. Almost the entire game is.
