A Painfully joyful Journey into suffering

This review will focus on Lisa the Painful but also the Lisa trilogy a whole.

Interdiction
Iโ€™ve loved this game for almost 10 years. itโ€™s my second favorite game of all time. Incredible gameplay, amazing Soundtrack, distinctive art style, and one of the best stories ever told all come together to create an atmosphere that carries you from the very first moment to the closing of the credits. If you havenโ€™t played it yet, start with Lisa: The First where it all began.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2743030/LISA_The_First/

Chapter 1: Lisa: The First
Lisa: The First is the origin of the trilogy. Though brief, this mini entry sets the tone with its raw, uncompromising grim and hopeless mood. Itโ€™s the essential primer. A quick taste of the darkness that defines the series and you Should Play it before playing the Painful or the Joyful.

Chapter 2: Lisa: The Painful
Part 1: The Painful

The Story:
The early hours are intentionally slow, almost as if the game is testing your patience by holding back its full impact; I think that is a brilliant way to throw off those who are expecting something else from the game. The deliberate pace gradually unfolds a richly layered world that truly comes to life after the first hour or so. The narrative unfolds with a distinctive dark humor, a biting, almost surreal tone that only deepens the effect of every painful moment. The 2D design is truly distinctive. Every area is carefully crafted, creating a purposeful and immersive landscape that guides you naturally through the game while telling the story of an area without saying a word. It makes you wonder if there are more areas you can explore or secrets you havenโ€™t discovered yet. This thoughtful design makes exploration feel exciting, ensuring that every step you take adds to the overall atmosphere regardless to where you are in the map.

The Gameplay:
The combat in Lisa: The Painful is meticulously polished, with turn based mechanics that reward strategic planning and precise execution. There are virtually no random encounters, only two designated spots where you must actively search for fights. Each encounter is unique, with every enemy boasting its own distinct visual flair and character. The boss fights are especially a highlight; theyโ€™re fantastic in both design and challenge. The secret boss in the Definitive Edition, with its raw emotional impact stands out as one of the most memorable and unique boss encounters I've ever experienced.

The Art:
The music and art style are central to what makes Lisa so special. The soundtrack remains with you long after you stop playing, and the visuals are uniquely unsettling. The abstract art supports the narrative perfectly, building an atmosphere that is both grim and, at moments, strangely beautiful.

Part 2: The Definitive Edition
The Definitive Edition refines many rough edges of the original. Key differences include tightened narrative elements, refined mechanics, and a secret boss fight that offers a fresh challenge. While the core experience remains faithful to the OG, these tweaks make the game a bit smoother and more satisfying overall. I recommend playing the Definitive Edition over the OG. Itโ€™s a superior way to experience this painful journey.

Chapter 3: Lisa: The Joyful
The Joyful stands as a game in its own right. It carries the dark DNA of the series while easing into a slightly lighter tone. In my experience, it doesn't deliver the same emotional weight as Lisa: The First or Lisa: The Painful. Its boss fights, however, are the best in the series, injecting a refreshing burst of excitement into the experience. While the overall offering feels more limited and falls short compared to the earlier entries, it provides a conclusion to the main story.

Chapter 4: Fan Games
The community around Lisa is incredible. Over the years, fan games have carried the torch with remarkable creativity. Standouts include:
Lisa: The Hopeful [taco-salad.itch.io] A Complete game.
Lisa: The Pointless [gamejolt.com] Still in development.
Lisa: The Fool An upcoming game.
All of Which are free.

Conclusion
From the humble, haunting beginnings of Lisa: The First, trials of Lisa: The Painful to the challenges of Lisa: The joyful, every chapter tells part of a story that I canโ€™t fully do justice in words. Iโ€™ve loved every minute of it, and I know youโ€™ll find something unforgettable in its pain and, surprisingly, in its hope.

A Haunting Beginning, A Ridiculous End

Fran Bow kicks off in the eerie corridors of a hospital-asylum, immediately immersing you in a world that drips with unsettling dread and meticulous detail. The opening chapters are a masterclass in atmosphere. Each shadow and every whispered sound pulls you into a narrative that promises depth and terror.
Much like Machinarium its early puzzles are beautifully crafted and challenging, luring you into a point & click adventure that feels both poetic and mysterious.

However, the game takes an unexpected, jarring turn. Halfway through, the quality doesnโ€™t taper off gradually, instead, it nosedives. The story abruptly veers into convoluted territory with alternate realities and time travel gimmicks that clash with the initial horror. This shift isnโ€™t subtle, it undermines the carefully built tension and transforms a once engrossing experience into a tangled, silly mess.

Even the puzzles, which once charming, start to feel repetitive and uninspired as the narrative loses its focus. What begins as a deeply engaging, dark descent turns into a let down where the ending feels as if it was bolted on for the sake of novelty rather than narrative integrity.

The opening hours are hauntingly beautiful and memorable. Yet, the later chapters betray that promise, leaving you with a final act that feels both rushed and absurd. For those willing to try for the sake of its early brilliance, Fran Bow offers a taste of atmospheric horror, just be prepared for a sluggish second half & a finale that will make you wish you invested your time playing something else.

A Cryptic Oasis of Reflection & Serenity

Set in a decaying, otherworldly landscape dominated by a skeletal birch tree, the game thrives on its cryptic nature. There are no tutorials or clear answers. just eerie, low poly environments, cryptic symbols, and glowing vials that alter the treeโ€™s fate. This ambiguity is its strength, inviting you to slow down, observe, and reflect. Every discovery feels earned, every revelation open to interpretation. Despite its ominous undertones, the game is surprisingly relaxing. The slow pacing and grainy, PS1-era visuals create a nostalgic warmth, while the ambient soundtrack droning relaxing synths and distant whispers, lulls you into a hypnotic rhythm. Wandering its abandoned streets and clifftop shrines feels meditative, with even simple actions like pouring liquids into altars becoming calming rituals.

Thematically, the game dances with existential weight. Its branching endings tied to the treeโ€™s cyclical life, death, and rebirth invite reflection on futility, purpose, and our relationship with nature. Yet these heavy ideas never feel oppressive. Instead, theyโ€™re softened by the gameโ€™s abstract presentation, allowing you to project your own meaning onto its mysteries. Is it a parable about environmental collapse? A metaphor for grief? A commentary on the inevitability of time? the game refuses to dictate answers, making each playthrough a deeply personal experience.

Fatum Betula is a cryptic, meditative gem that thrives on ambiguity and atmosphere. Its haunting beauty, slow pacing, and open-ended mysteries create a serene, reflective experience. itโ€™s a quiet, unforgettable journey into the unknown.

Mouthwashing is a psychological horror walking simulator that draws me into its deeply unsettling, introspective world. The gameโ€™s minimalist visuals and haunting environments create a sense of isolation and quiet dread, making every step feel deliberate and laden with meaning.

What really stands out, though, are the characters, the crew manages to be remarkably memorable. Each member of the stranded team has a distinct personality and hidden depths that slowly unfold as I keep exploring. Their sparse interactions are heavy with unspoken stories, making every encounter feel poignant and real.

What captivates me further is the way the game slowly unravels its eerie narrative. It doesnโ€™t rely on jump scares or overt horror; instead, it leaves me pondering the blurred lines between reality and nightmare long after Iโ€™ve finished playing. The deliberate pacing and understated design invite a meditative, albeit unsettling, experience that challenges my perception of fear.

The narrative in Mouthwashing is as raw and thought provoking as its atmosphere. It weaves an enigmatic tale of isolation and inner conflict, using subtle environmental cues and fragmented dialogue to pull me deeper into its mysterious world. Every twist and turn of the story feels like a piece of a larger, haunting puzzle, one that invites endless reflection on the fragility of the human psyche. The way the narrative unfolds, leaving room for interpretation and personal connection, is both unsettling and profoundly moving

Mouthwashing is a journey into the darker corners of the mind, enhanced by its unique blend of media & Narrative. It quietly digs into your psyche, leaving an indelible impression long after the experience is over.

Take responsibility

Thank You Wrong Organ for crafting such a unique and haunting experience. Iโ€™ll be waiting eagerly to see what you will create next!

Pre-Release Review
I went into this expecting disappointment, but I was completely blown away. Silent Hill 2 has been my favorite game for years, and I was prepared to be let down by the remake. But they nailed it. The care and attention they put into preserving the original atmosphere while adding new elements that feel even more true to Silent Hill 2 than the original itself left me amazed. They didnโ€™t just rehash the game; they truly respected what made it special and built on that.

Full Review: Silent Hill 2 Remake (Post-Playthrough)
After beating the entire game, hereโ€™s my take on the remake:

A Game of Its Own
The remake isnโ€™t a substitute for the original. itโ€™s its own game. While it follows the same haunting story, it offers an alternative gameplay experience. That said, I still believe the original holds a special place, and if you want to understand why Silent Hill 2 is so beloved, start with the Enhanced Edition [enhanced.townofsilenthill.com] before diving into the remake.

Different, Not Better
They are not the same game. The remake brings in new mechanics, gameplay elements and puzzles. But in doing so, it loses some of the raw, unfiltered horror that made the original so compelling. In my view, the original is still superior in many ways.

Not the Best at Anything
As much as I love the remake, it isnโ€™t my favorite game of all time like the original. Itโ€™s not even the best horror game of this decade. In fact, games like Signalis & Super Lone Survivor embody more of Silent Hill 2โ€™s spirit than this remake does.

Even as a horror remake, it doesnโ€™t top Resident Evil 2 Remake . It Set a higher bar five years ago. Even in 2024 alone, Crow Country & Mouthwashing delivered stronger horror experiences.

While the remake has its strengths, I would still recommend playing any of these games over it.

Camera & Visual Frustrations
One of the most frustrating aspects is the camera. James occupies 2/3 of the screen, constantly obscuring the beautiful environment. If this was an intentional creative choice, why not go all the way and make the game first-person? A field-of-view option would have helped, but unfortunately, itโ€™s not available. Itโ€™s a baffling design flaw that dampens the visuals, making it more frustrating than immersive.

Missed Creative Beats
Some creative elements donโ€™t land as well as they could. The โ€œAnyway? What Do You Mean Anyway?!โ€ cutscene feels clumsy and out of place. The Magdalene sequence Mariaโ€™s first death is a major downgrade in both atmosphere and music compared to the original. I used to push through the original just to experience that moment, but in the remake, itโ€™s a letdown. There are several moments like this, but these stood out the most.

Technical and Graphical Issues
While the environments are breathtaking, the game suffers from technical issues. Frame drops and graphical hiccups were frequent, despite my hardware being more than capable. I had to spend extra time tweaking settings to get the best experience. But I don't blame the game for this. There are so many options I can enable and disable, and I don't understand them all. It could be me or my computer, I'm just mentioning my experience.

A Notable Upgrade
On a brighter note, Eddie is a standout improvement. His character feels more fleshed out, making his psychological unraveling even more compelling. The bosses, too, feel more like actual bosses rather than just stronger enemies, and I had a lot of fun fighting them.

Conclusion
I love this remake, and Iโ€™m glad it was made. It didnโ€™t disappoint me overall. However, I still prefer the original for its raw, unfiltered atmosphere.

My advice: if youโ€™re new to Silent Hill 2, experience the Enhanced Edition [enhanced.townofsilenthill.com] first to fully appreciate its legacy. Then play the remake. Itโ€™s clear that a lot of love and effort went into it, despite its flaws.

Time to mix drinks and change lives!

As someone who typically isnโ€™t a fan of visual novels, I didnโ€™t expect to love VA-11 Hall-A as much as I did. But it turned out to be an exception that hooked me from start to finish.

Unlike most visual novels, VA-11 Hall-A lets you actually play as a bartender, mixing drinks and changing lives! It adds an interactive layer that keeps the game from feeling like you're just clicking through text. I enjoyed the balance between the gameplay and narrative.

The story is fantastic, filled with memorable characters who come into your bar with their own lives, problems, and personalities. The way these stories intertwine gives you a real sense of connection with them. Itโ€™s not just about making drinks, itโ€™s about learning their world and how they survive in a cyberpunk dystopia.

The art style is amazing, too. The pixel art has this retro charm that fits the cyberpunk vibe perfectly. The music Incredible! The soundtrack complements the atmosphere so well that I found myself just not doing anything and just listening to the music

I completed the game 100%, and I can confidently say it was worth every moment. Even though Iโ€™m not into visual novels, VA-11 Hall-A stands out because of its unique mix of gameplay, story, art, and atmosphere.

The Caribbean Sail is a charming, retro styled sailing adventure that Iโ€™ve grown fond of. Itโ€™s simple but hits the right spot when Iโ€™m in the mood for something lighthearted and Silly. Thereโ€™s a surprising amount of humor and dark twists thrown in. The random events at sea keep me wondering what's next? and I like that I can sail with or against the wind, never quite knowing whatโ€™ll happen next. The unpredictability of my voyages keeps me coming back. Itโ€™s a small game, but it nails the feeling of a perilous sea journey, and I find myself enjoying it for what it is. A quirky delightful sailing experience.
