A charming game that does a good job at defining itself as it's own entity despite its many similarities with other games like Terraria, Starbound, and Don't Starve.

Sieges are the most deadly things. Killed 3 heirs in succession, days apart from one another, and it completely dismantled my kingdom due to inheritance laws.

Surely this needs to be adjusted? I play my player character for less than 5 years before they're either murdered, killed in a siege, or die from extreme stress due to a barrage of events. While I try to embrace the absurd nature of medieval horticulture as a treatment for a grievous wound or the sly tactics employed by my distant cousins, this is just unfun.

It's a fun little game that suffers from a few too many oversights.

Unlocked buildings and explore locations in the Lore Store can break and ruin the main campaign by overriding spawns for various important locations - like dungeons in Dungeon Crawl.

While this is a small issue in and of itself, when you've spent several hours playing this one campaign just for all of it to be for nothing, kinda sucks really hard. A real buzzkill.

Now I feel reluctant to start any new campaigns because I don't want all my fun to be ruined by one small 'bug' of sorts.

Also, this game is not suitable for two or less players. You really need a full party of 3 to really stand a chance at the many difficult encounters that do not scale to accommodate smaller parties. I have managed to succeed at the odd campaign with two players, but it does feel like an inexplicably harsh uphill battle and not a fun challenge. This was on the easier difficulties as well.

I'm also not a fan of the camera snapping me back and forth when I'm looking around the map, so it just feels a little clunky and counter intuitive at times.

Also, Lore Books aren't shared across players, so if I start the campaign and have a certain character slot on the character creation, I'll be hard locked into getting the first loot roll and never get any Lore Books

UPDATE: They released a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ board game before delivering on any of the promises they made when this game first hit Steam Early Access. New additions are a buggy mess, with little care or consideration put into them. Shameful.

I do not recommend this game based on the extremely long waits between content updates and the low amount of content included in each update. This game made millions and the devs haven't shown much of that appreciation in terms of using the money to develop their Early Access game.

OLD REVIEW:
I recommend this game for its potential, but as it currently stands, updates are a little on the slower end. While I don't want to rush the devs at all, it does make this game feel stale when you wait a long period of time for anything new to come out, and then that joy still only lasts a few hours.

A few mods that are 1.3 compatible really don't like playing nicely with Ideology. Prune your mod list and enjoy a more vanilla experience and then wait for things to get up to speed in the workshop community. Thoroughly impressed so far.

I am writing this review in the wake of the recently announced Ideologies Expansion which I am very excited for so I thought I'd revisit this DLC and express my own personal opinions on it.

When Royalty came out, it certainly peaked a lot of people's interest because many were under the assumption that once RimWorld left early access and debuted it's 1.0 release that we'd never see any more official RimWorld content and that it would be down to the thriving modding community to curate these new experiences or content that users craved. However, when Royalty was announced and then released, while it was received well by the more loyal fan base (who are happy to see anything new come out for their favourite game), many criticised it for valid reasons.

Now I'm sure you can find all of those criticisms featured in the more popular reviews below so I won't bother repeating what other people have put the time and effort into articulating themselves. However, here's my take on it a year after it's release:

While Royalty introduced many new features such as psycasts and new reasons to explore the planet and travel to other destinations (and make use of the caravan feature in general) it also introduced a new win condition that wasn't reliant on creating a space ship and fleeing the planet. However, ultimately this didn't change much for many players, and I include myself as a part of this particular group, as they never strive to achieve the win condition and often play a certain colony with a custom narrative and story-end goal where building a rocket ship was obsolete because there wasn't a hard-set end-goal or win condition. So, it certainly was a very niche and stylised off-shoot to the standard game play that RimWorld was known for. I think this is where it fell short of it's original expectations, as many players weren't interested in the game play offered in this DLC and found royal pawns more annoying than innovative with their inability to do dumb labour and other tasks once they reached a certain title level. Of course mods stepped in to reverse such changes and other tweaks to improve game play or to make the features in royalty less of a burden to manage (throne rooms for example). After removing many different features and constraints introduced in Royalty what are you left with? Of course this varies between each player, but it does beckon the question of "is it even worth getting it?" especially if you're just going to invalidate or remove many of the new changes.

However, enough of the criticisms. I think there is something integral to be read about DLC releases for RimWorld from this release. Yes this is the first, and currently only, one so it's hard to establish a base-line when it comes to DLC releases and what to expect, but alongside with this DLC came free content updates 1.1 and 1.2 which fleshed out many of the features added in Royalty such as more psycasts and more quests as well as many new base game additions and alterations that improved quality of life. As well, this DLC proved that Tynan is very conscious of the modding community and worked closely with the modding community to make sure this new Royalty DLC and 1.1 and 1.2 were as compatible with mods as possible and tried to improve the modding support within the game. While you didn't need the DLC to benefit from these changes that came with the DLC it's something to take note of: Tynan recognises and cares for the RimWorld community and that deserves merit. Although you may argue that that should be a baseline/industry standard when it comes to games that have a modding community, but the reality is that it isn't and instead of observing what the modding community is doing and try to blatantly steal from it and then sell it (cough cough Notch, cough cough Bethesda), Tynan is instead taking influence from what kind of player-base RimWorld has cultivated and adapting the game to better suit these fans.

From the very limited insight to the new 1.3 release and upcoming Ideologies Expansion, all of it is focused on what I have expressed above. Absolute focus on the community and looking into and building upon the communities preferred play styles. Many 'essential' QoL mods are becoming a part of the base game, meaning they will integrated seamlessly which means complex and larger mod lists will encounter less errors and improve compatibility over all while ensuring all assets conform to one particular style more effectively and helping modders build off of these additions without needing to collaborate with other mod authors to create a patch. With these mods being apart of the base game, this makes community contributions so much easier to curate. All of which is included in the free 1.3 release.

Final thoughts: Hey, this DLC may not be the best addition to RimWorld and there are certainly hundreds of mods that add a lot more content and they're for free. However, this DLC brought a bunch of free updates alongside it and there's still certainly some things to enjoy in this addition even if in the bigger picture have little impact on your game or you personally - for example, I have no interest in pursuing the highest ranking titles, but sometimes I think it's cute to give my favourite colonists a title or two so they feel special. I support Tynan as a game dev, and I shall continue to support and fund future development of this game and that's why I recommend you buy it.

A masterpiece. I never played before The Final Cut was released, so I have no experience of what this game was like before they added full voice acting and other additional features, however, it still remained a largely well received game judging by the older steam reviews.

What I can say definitively though, the voice acting is rich and immersive. It makes every encounter something to sit back to and indulge as if you're really there yourself.

While I enjoy indie survival games a lot, this one is just not great. Once you've played it through once (survived a fair few hoard nights and have high-level gear), the next time around feels extremely repetitive.

You begin to learn what buildings generate the best items, their entire layouts, and which loot piles aren't worth looking through. It soon feels like a speed-run to get the best gear by going from town to town to find the 'good buildings' to survive the next hoard night. Which, yes, by definition this is a tower defence game mashed in with survival, but it just feels boring.

Each 'major' update just feels so lacklustre, and while the update may have added cool new items, the overall experience/core game-play feels the exact same.

Overall: very grindy game play, where you do the same thing over and over again to no end.

Update 03/11/2023: This game is still in alpha and Early Access. Don't bother.
