The absolute STATE of the reviews right now:
"Teens are OP and the Monsters are pitifully weak!"
"Monsters are OP and the Teens are useless to counter it!"

The contradictory statements are astounding, and each day that goes by I become more and more convinced that this is targeted review bombing than legitimate opinions.

The only thing that sucks about this game is the fact it is Free To Play, because then anyone can download it and write a negative review that is so detached from reality. I'm not trying to gate keep here, or say that only certain people deserve or should be permitted to play this game, but I think anyone who plays other 4v1/asymmetrical PvP genre games (most popular of which being DBD) can agree that DBD doesn't deserve it's misleading glorified review rating of 80%+ positive reviews.

Personally, I feel these negative reviews are a reflection of the 4v1 genre as a whole, and not targeted specifically at VHS.

If DBD was free to play on Steam I bet everything I own that it would plummet well below the 40% line because the 4v1 genre isn't for everyone and at its very roots suffers from a magnitude of flaws, but DBD has the advantage of not being accessible for everyone, and only people who are willing to bet their own money will play it, meaning they're more likely to research and deliberate on whether they actually want to play that game - unlike VHS where you lose nothing by giving it a go.

Idk, maybe I'm just actually salty that a good 4v1 game gets ♥♥♥♥ on, when it's primary competitor is sitting on a golden toilet assuming 'the high ground' which is totally beyond me because DBD sucks ass and I have nearly 1000 hours in it.

This game is better than DBD, no question about it. (Although, I agree being better than ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DBD doesn't make this a god-tier game, because it ain't hard to be better than something else when that bar is set so low - but I digress.)

This game is totally undeserving of a "mixed" rating. Most people complain about long queue times and then go on to compare it to DBD as if DBD doesn't STILL suffer from the same problems.

I find the queue times in VHS are on average 5mins as a Teen and almost instant as a Monster. FYI I play in the EU servers. That queue time is not awful. It's not ideal, but I often find I am waiting a similar amount of time for League of Legends, Team Fight Tactics, DBD Survivor, and DBD Killer. Both of which have a massively larger player base.

So, while it is frustrating to be waiting, sadly this is essentially the standard experience for 4v1 genre games, at least VHS has a way of notifying you what the matchmaking system needs more of "(need more monsters...)".

If the vast majority of the negative reviews are ONLY because of the queue times, then that's just a shame because this game is honestly good and a super refreshing take on the 4v1 genre which has taken a look at what's currently on the market and built a game around resolving the weaknesses - e.g the power disparity in DBD where the only goal as survivor is to escape so selfish survivors are massively rewarded even though it goes against the status quo and so forth.

Teens are great fun, and Monster is a different kind of game, but I also find it very fun. I prefer Teen only because I like yelling at other Teens to take their shoes off and the weird RP high school drama that can sometimes ensue (reminds me a lot of Friday The 13th - The Game).

Whenever I lose as Monster, it genuinely feels fair. I recognise how I was outplayed and how the Teens performed and worked together effectively - it is genuinely a very thrilling experience and I sorely wish there was a way as the Monster to genuinely congratulate the Teens at the end of the match because I had wicked fun and want to pay my respects when it's due. Unlike in DBD, when I lose as Killer, I feel humiliated because that game is an unbalanced POS and I feel so incapable.

So yeah, please give this game a chance. Watch some videos if you're new to the 4v1 genre and get a good feel for how the game plays before giving it a go yourself - just a small amount of foreknowledge and awareness goes a very long way.

Sieges are the most deadly things. Killed 3 heirs in succession, days apart from one another, and it completely dismantled my kingdom due to inheritance laws.

Surely this needs to be adjusted? I play my player character for less than 5 years before they're either murdered, killed in a siege, or die from extreme stress due to a barrage of events. While I try to embrace the absurd nature of medieval horticulture as a treatment for a grievous wound or the sly tactics employed by my distant cousins, this is just unfun.

It's a fun little game that suffers from a few too many oversights.

Unlocked buildings and explore locations in the Lore Store can break and ruin the main campaign by overriding spawns for various important locations - like dungeons in Dungeon Crawl.

While this is a small issue in and of itself, when you've spent several hours playing this one campaign just for all of it to be for nothing, kinda sucks really hard. A real buzzkill.

Now I feel reluctant to start any new campaigns because I don't want all my fun to be ruined by one small 'bug' of sorts.

Also, this game is not suitable for two or less players. You really need a full party of 3 to really stand a chance at the many difficult encounters that do not scale to accommodate smaller parties. I have managed to succeed at the odd campaign with two players, but it does feel like an inexplicably harsh uphill battle and not a fun challenge. This was on the easier difficulties as well.

I'm also not a fan of the camera snapping me back and forth when I'm looking around the map, so it just feels a little clunky and counter intuitive at times.

Also, Lore Books aren't shared across players, so if I start the campaign and have a certain character slot on the character creation, I'll be hard locked into getting the first loot roll and never get any Lore Books

UPDATE: They released a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ board game before delivering on any of the promises they made when this game first hit Steam Early Access. New additions are a buggy mess, with little care or consideration put into them. Shameful.

I do not recommend this game based on the extremely long waits between content updates and the low amount of content included in each update. This game made millions and the devs haven't shown much of that appreciation in terms of using the money to develop their Early Access game.

OLD REVIEW:
I recommend this game for its potential, but as it currently stands, updates are a little on the slower end. While I don't want to rush the devs at all, it does make this game feel stale when you wait a long period of time for anything new to come out, and then that joy still only lasts a few hours.

A few mods that are 1.3 compatible really don't like playing nicely with Ideology. Prune your mod list and enjoy a more vanilla experience and then wait for things to get up to speed in the workshop community. Thoroughly impressed so far.
