You have to survive until you get yourself established. A major one that saved me is controlling jobs and using the market to buy resources. Build nothing but farm districts and farms on the home planet. Constantly conquer systems and make sure you have the civic that lets you automatically get stations for free once you take over a system for a certain amount of time. Kinda broken and very useful in saving resources. After you've taken a few planets and fixed your economy, you can pump into research and viola. You are unstoppable.
