I started with Xizor, abandoning everything except Mandalor, which is very defendable and focus on the galactic south east, going from Ukio (iirc) to the hidyan highway (the purple trade route). Once the south was secure and i had established my fortress worlds i switch to Zann abd start advancing towars Fondor, Corellia, and Abrogado Rae, stopping at Jaeda (or Jakku i do not remember). And the swing around to the galactic west. At that point it became a clean up job.
I recommend corrupting everything. Corruption gives a good solid income, it provides intelligence on the planet and allows your fleet to pass trough. Once i located the Space Tech planets i hit them with fleets of 20-30 Supa fighters, later accompany by Skipray to keep the relegate the enemy to low tier units.
Another tactic i used often early game was to conquer the ground with my heroes, which saved me a lot of time in securing the south.
