A suggesstion for a Future Update: a proper veterancy system.
I don't know if this has been suggested before and is simply not feasible to do with the games code, or if there is an actual suggestions subforum that I am too blind too see, but I had a suggestion for a future update. My suggestion is a veterancy system that rewards players for keeping their units alive in battle by providing cumulative bonuses to units that participate in multiple battles and survive, while also allowing one to upgrade lower tech units into higher tier equivalents through accumulated veterancy.

Picture this: you are playing as the Empire and have several imperial army trooper units of various types. they experience several battles in which some units are wiped out entirely, but others survive to see another day. Those that survive learn from their experiences and perform better during the next few battles, defeating their enemies more easily and surviving longer. Eventually they are experienced enough that they are promoted to proper stormtroopers of the appropriate type (through an upgrade at a level 2 barracks). After several battles as stormtroopers, they finally earn the chance to join the ranks of the imperial shocktrooper battalions (once again, through an upgrade at the appropriate level barracks). These veteran shocktroopers perform much better than newly trained shocktroopers, and that makes them much more valuable in the long run.

Such a system could be applied across all classes of units, in ground and space combat, and rewards players who play smarter, and those who manage their forces well. it would also emphasize ensuring the survival of your units, as if they survive more battles, they gain more experience, and thus are better in the long run vs. newly trained units.

Anyways this was just a suggestion I had, and I thank you for taking the time to read this and leaving your thoughts.

Thanks for making the suggestion. We have a dedicated idea channel on our discord if you are interested in getting more involved, though steam posts are always welcome too.

This idea isn't possible unfortunately. We can't really track how many battles a unit has fought in, and having veteran versions would require us to essentially make a slightly varied copy of every single unit in the code, which isn't great on the back end of things.

I understand, the Alamo Engine ( I think that is its name) is ancient at this point, and it is remarkable what modders have been able to do with it. That being said, what about the other portion of my idea: upgrading lower tier units to their higher tier equivalents? Using the example from above (imperial army trooper -> stormtrooper -> shocktrooper), it could be a good way to make your initial starting forces in the random campaigns become more useful in the long run.

I'm not too sure, I suppose it could be nice flavour if you upgrade your starting units, and we could probably find a way to make it work with the shocktrooper build cap.
