Black Mesa: Blue Shift

Kuvaus

The fifth chapter of the Half-Life: Blue Shift remake, Focal Point, is now released!

Relive the Black Mesa Incident as Gordon Freeman's best friend - Barney Calhoun!

This is a work-in-progress modification, the content may change in the future.

Installation via symbolic link (Recommended):

This method allows Blue Shift to automatically update from the Steam Workshop!
Important: If you already have an active "bshift" folder in Black Mesa root directory, you have to delete it or otherwise the symbolic link might fail to create!

-Go to "*/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362890/2424633574";
-Launch the "bshift_gamelink.bat" as administrator;
-Check, if the symbolic link "bshift" has been created in the Black Mesa root directory ("*/Steam/steamapps/Common/Black Mesa");
-Done.

Installation via "bshift_install.bat":

-Subscribe to the mod in Workshop and wait for it to download.
-Go to your Library, click right mouse button on Black Mesa, go to "Manage" and click on "Browse local files";
-Go from current directory ("steamapps/common/Black Mesa" up to the "steamapps" folder;
-From this directory, go to "workshop/content/362890/2424633574";
-Once you locate the mod files, double click on "bshift_install.bat" and follow what it says.
-Done.

Installation via file browser (If previous methods didn't work):

Important: Delete the old "bshift" folder from the Black Mesa root directory before copying the new one or you'll face some issues.

-Go to "*/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362890/2424633574";
-Copy the "bshift" folder and the .bat files into your Black Mesa root directory ("*/Steam/steamapps/Common/Black Mesa");
-Proceed to the launch instructions.

Important: You will have to do this again each time a new version is released since Steam will only Update your workshop folder!

Launch via Desktop Shortcuts (If used the "bshift_install.bat" Method):

-Launch the game via "Black Mesa: Blue Shift" or "Black Mesa: Blue Shift (Old UI)" shortcut on your Desktop. This is the Step 5 in the installation video.

Launch via file browser (If used the Symbolic Link Method):
-Go to "*/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362890/2424633574";
-Launch using the .bat files.

Launch via file browser (If used the File Browser Method):
-Go to your Black Mesa root directory ("*/Steam/steamapps/Common/Black Mesa/");
-Launch using the .bat files.

Launch via Steam Library:

-New UI: Go to Black Mesa game properties in Steam and type "-game bshift" into your launch options.
-Old UI: type "-game bshift -oldgameui" into your launch options.

Important: Don't forget to remove this entry when you want to play Black Mesa again.

Uninstall via bshift_uninstall.bat:

-Go to Black Mesa root directory and launch "bshift_uninstall.bat".

Uninstall via file browser:
-Go to your Black Mesa root directory ("*/Steam/steamapps/Common/Black Mesa/");
-Delete:
-"bshift" folder
-All of the "bshift*.bat" files
-"bshift_gamelink.bat"
-"bshift_icon.ico"
-"bshift_uninstall.bat"

- Game may hang when starting (Fix: Please wait a few minutes, some machines may take a while to boot the game)
- The new UI is highly likely to crash the game on loading/opening menus (Use -oldgameui as launch parameter or the corresponding .bat file as a workaround)
- DXVK still might cause some visual issues in a few areas on certain systems
- Second corpse in the canal disposal scene sometimes decides to float in the air instead of falling into the canal
- Potential frame drops in some larger Xen areas with water on certain systems (Turn down either Water or Sun Shadow video settings)
- Forcefields in Xen sometimes perform a weird disco-flickering (Can be caused by changing video settings in this map)
FIX: Load a savegame ;-;
- Potential frame drops in some Xen areas caused by sound data (The game will look like it "freezes" but this is a temporary state)
FIX: Type "stopsound" or "snd_restart" into the console OR wait a few seconds until memory gets flushed

The mod seems good at first, but then you realize you have to constantly jump to avoid what's under your feet, and the character never does it well! The mouse settings also need reworking; in fact, just copy them from Half-Life 2, it was great... Plus, the enemies sprint too fast, almost teleporting! In the last stretch, I really struggled to figure out where to go or what to do... and when I did, I found myself fighting with the lights in my face and I couldn't see a thing. I'm not kidding, it's a mess! So much so that I didn't understand where the last portal to go through was until I accidentally stumbled upon it. By the way, there are supply drops all over Xen, even more than in the original game, but they're not where you need them. You have to touch the infinite supply crates multiple times or else it won't get them all. The RPG remains unusable until the rocket hits a surface, even without the laser pointer...

So far, the mod isn't complete. The game is very long; I finished it to the last chapter in about 18 hours, which makes it as long as an average FPS... but then there's simply no ending. There's no point in downloading and trying it now; who knows how many years it will take to fully play it without any glitches. Right now, the last chapter available is a real drain on resources, and I struggled to maintain 60 FPS on a 3090, which is absurd. Plus, the Xen level takes up more than 50% of the entire game. It's very beautiful graphically, but a bit too long.

For now, I regret having played it and wasted all those hours, only to simply not get an ending. It doesn't make much sense to release mods like this, as if it were Early Access...
They should at least communicate right away how many chapters they want to make so that anyone who wants to try it already knows what to expect and those who want to wait know how much has been done up to that point.

Phenomenal mod but with one issue which can be me. Prior to getting the shotgun I did not enjoy the ammo management, I felt to many rooms lacked ammo or perhaps had it in places I couldn't find it. Normally I am not ammo starved in half life games but I did run out in this one. Running out of ammo can especially be an issue if I don't have a crowbar yet since then I can't conserve it. Didn't have problems with health management but felt underequipped and this was before I noticed the alt fire which as a result I didnt dare use much. If I am on my last clip and can't find ammo in the next 3 rooms thats a very frustrating experience. Ended up making a bind that gives pistol ammo. After getting the shotgun the issue went away for me.

One more thing - it's a request or proposal, depending on your response. Could you add controller input to the game? The game looks amazing and in fact I would ask you to add the controller input myself :) See, I am a developer, with around 8 years of experience, see my last post and I have always dreamed of making games. I have some experience with Unity3D, but not much :) So if you would like to get some help, for free ofcourse, I am in! Just message me! Or if you don't - I use XBox controller with Steam on PC, if that helps with the implementation :) Good luck!

The reason for the symbolic link to fail is the pushd command. It can't read paths with whitespace in it. Running bshift_gamelink.bat from cmd shows the error:

\Steam\steamapps\common\Black was unexpected at this time.

Change the content of bshift_gamelink.bat so it uses absolute paths, like this:

set "game_dir=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Black Mesa"
set "mod_dir=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\362890\2424633574\bshift"

if exist "%game_dir%\bshift" (
rmdir "%game_dir%\bshift"
if exist "%game_dir%\bshift" (
echo Could not recreate link - rmdir failed.
echo You can try to delete "%game_dir%\bshift" manually.
pause
exit 1
)
echo Old link removed.
)

mklink /J "%game_dir%\bshift" "%mod_dir%"
echo.
if exist "%game_dir%\bshift" (
echo Link created.
) else (
echo Could not link - mklink failed.
)
pause

copied the bshift folder and .bat files into my root black mesa file; writing "-game bshift" won't work, and I can't delete to start over. Error message"file is in use elsewhere". Everything is closed. I don't understand.

focal point is REALLY laggy and crashes alot
NECEROS 17.8. klo 13.54
It's ok. It's laggy as hell even on low settings. Many of the puzzles are not clear at all. Some times they want you to do things they don't explain. A few things take precise action with almost no room for error... it's too over-tuned. I think they expect us all to be top tier gamers.

It got so hard near the end I just turned on god mode and tried to enjoy the story.

The install does not work out of the box, good luck.
