Bone spurs are real and you can't serve in the military with them. If you think they are petty, you've never had them. My maternal grandmother suffered them for ages, on her spine and elsewhere.

Not to mention that if you can't have diabetes or braces and serve in the military, how can you expect a man with serious pain in his feet to march with fifty pounds of gear on his back?

This could work. Just tweak things so that if you select him you have to be Very Xenophobic & Very Militaristic, and then occasionally he will do and say very stupid things. Also choosing him would reduce the overal morale and intelligence level of your empire.
