MECH-MODE: E N G A G E
You're right that combat mechs will attack enemies in Work mode, but only if they're close to them.
Which means that, in vanilla, if you want your mechs to attack some faraway enemy, you have to set up a "war" area/zone, set your combat mechs to go there, then set them to Work mode, and hope they start shooting before being shot themselves.
Setting your mechs to Engage mode would do all that automatically by using the standard raider AI with a 200-tile search radius.
"What's the difference between this mode and work mode? I mean, combat mechanoids in work mode will automatically seek out and attack enemies."
