@Blaize you can reduce the size of the entire UI, but theres nothing I personally can do to resize the alert screen. I've already mentioned the issue of it going off screen multiple times and I'm hoping it'll get fixed eventually. In the meantime, you can also use the orange notification menu in a pinch.
Blaize 3 Nov, 2024 @ 10:00am
Is there a way to reduce the size of the log? it takes my whole screen, i cant watch the fight at all
PrivateRiem  [author] 22 Oct, 2024 @ 8:30pm
@ScrambieBambie Install instruction is for the first time only. Annoucements.txt occasionally gets changed by the game updating, but otherwise will not change or revert on its own, and so only requires changes the first time aroun, then you can simply add the mod to mod list when creating a new world like any other mod.
ScrambieBambie 19 Oct, 2024 @ 3:31am
Sorry.
Are those instalation instructions and all their steps necessary for new worlds too?
Or for new worlds only sound and .txt pasting is needed?
PrivateRiem  [author] 10 Sep, 2024 @ 2:44pm
@Witherslick that is out of my power to fix. Sparring, to my knowledge, counts as combat actions just as regular combat does. I talked to putnam about fixing the red menu so it doesn't roll out of the screen, but that was a long time ago.
WitherSlick 31 Aug, 2024 @ 5:45am
The main issue I am having with this mod, that has made me uninstall it is that it even alerts when my dwarfs are sparring, thus the alert button is literally always on the screen once I get multiple squads training seasonally. It basically makes the alert button not useful because there is always an ALERT.

Do we have to do anything else than include this? i cant seem to read unpaused logs still
mudplayerx 18 May, 2024 @ 8:59pm
There is a MOD tab whenever you create a world. You have to move them from the left list to the right list. Any conflicts will appear in borwn text.
MNarath 14 May, 2024 @ 11:56pm
ok turns out for some reason DF does not automatically move mods installed trough steam into the installed mod folder anymore you gotta do that manually
MNarath 14 May, 2024 @ 11:50pm
questions do mods now get automatically get applied to all worlds i cannot find the advanced menu anymore during world creation where you would choose mods to install
Samaj 6 May, 2024 @ 10:14am
Is it possible to exclude sparring from ALERTS?
donottellmetonottellyou 24 Apr, 2024 @ 5:33pm
The installation instructions are missing a step: you must delete the old announcements.txt from the prefs folder. Not doing so will simply alter the default settings, which will not override the current settings in the prefs folder. Alternatively, overwrite the announcements.txt file in the prefs folder, and leave the one in data/init alone.

Should anyone be having issues after updating and would rather revert to the previous version, remember that the V1 files can be found in Dwarf Fortress\mods\2905960813 (1)
@Devv The way combat audio is handled is different in V2 because now that sound files can be replaced with workshop mods, an update was necessary to avoid replacing files manually.
This version also adds more info to the combat log, as a bonus.
Devv 1 Mar, 2024 @ 11:13am
I'm no longer getting any Audio when combat starts in this mod, When in older versions I did.
Did something change and would you be able to give me a link to an older version please?
FurtherReading 13 Feb, 2024 @ 1:02am
I was having a lot of difficulty getting this working - was getting constant alert noises every time something was added to the combat log but I think i figured it out. You need to create another new world AFTER performing the install steps and that new world should work properly. I'm still not 100% sure as I didn't get a lot of embarks with non-flying animals in the new world to test yet, but exiling a dwarf and then fighting that exile seemed to result in no alert noise spam.
PrivateRiem  [author] 8 Feb, 2024 @ 11:48am
@Billy It is quite possible as the two versions work in completely different ways. If you already have the mod working on an old world, I do not recommend updating, and had I found a way to stop the mod from asking to update I would have done so, but this update had to be done at some point sadly, even knowing it could lead to undesirable consequences in old worlds.

Verifying the integrity of game files should normally clear any modifications to the original files, along with this mod, so it is an option. I would personally delete the modified files prior to doing that, just to be sure.
I am deeply sorry to everybody that this update has inconvenienced, but for the sake of future installs, it had to be done.
Billy the Warrior 8 Feb, 2024 @ 9:50am
Yeah having same trouble as 4 4ever trying to update v1 to v2 in a world. might be the problem using this version on a old world?
PrivateRiem  [author] 8 Feb, 2024 @ 8:12am
@4 4Ever I've pushed an update that should make installation easier and faster, and better support the mod system. Let me know if you still have issues after trying this version.
Bostson 7 Feb, 2024 @ 5:57pm
tried installing twice, both times combat and sparring keeps generating alerts and sounds non-stop, how can I only get the unified log without the sounds/alerts?
PrivateRiem  [author] 15 Jan, 2024 @ 12:35pm
@Blaize You can change the size of the menus in the dwarf fortress settings. (UI Scale)
Blaize 14 Jan, 2024 @ 2:42pm
Is there a way to reduce the scale of the combat report? because for me it hide almost all the screen, can't even see dwarf except on edges of my screen
Carabao 2 Dec, 2023 @ 8:56am
It works on a new world with DFHack.
chell 30 Nov, 2023 @ 9:17am
edit data/init/announcements.txt, NOT prefs/announcements.txt?
Psicoses 15 Oct, 2023 @ 9:27am
I'm not sure why mine is different but the sound files were located in
Dwarf Fortress\mods\2905960813 (1)\Sounds

Also I was unable to get it working in an existing save. Only new embarks would have no bell sound during sparring.
Reathren 12 Oct, 2023 @ 9:28am
Patch 50.10 did not add anything like a real time combat log. This mod still works in 50.10 and is still very useful to see what is going on in a fight. please keep it alive if you can.
Elkstone 4 Oct, 2023 @ 1:45pm
Wait it does? I somehow couldn't find how to look at combat logs in real time
overdriven 2 Oct, 2023 @ 3:25am
Obsolete? It still works and I still find it more useful than the new real-time log (except the combat sound, which is a bit over the top).
Night 25 Sep, 2023 @ 12:57pm
Thanks for your lovely work, It was very much appreciated while it was needed
Goblin Death Shaman 24 Sep, 2023 @ 2:33am
Now that this mod is obsolete, how do I uninstall it?
PrivateRiem  [author] 22 Sep, 2023 @ 4:49pm
The new update should have made this mod obsolete, which is what I was hoping for. I haven't played in a while, so I can't really confirm it, but if everything went according to plan, this mod is no longer needed, praise Putnam.
Zoë 19 Sep, 2023 @ 1:08pm
does this work with the new 50.10 update or did the update make this mod obsolete?
PrivateRiem  [author] 23 May, 2023 @ 6:37pm
@Jace If the sound is whats bugging you, you can change the soundfile for whatever you prefer. If you want to completely remove the mod, replace the soundfiles with the originals, and undo the changes to announcement.txt .
Kat 23 May, 2023 @ 1:20pm
Is there a way to safely remove this from a save? No offense but I find the sounds extremely annoying. It sounds more like a jumpscare than actual combat.
Cobbler 20 May, 2023 @ 7:44am
Thank christ we will have the old gamelog, I was worried they had given up on that in favour of the "modern" announcements/notifications. Old was farrrr superior.
Tonus 17 May, 2023 @ 2:32am
I guess we will have sound mods sooner than later. Putnam added example sound mod for SDL2 version of the game 2 weeks ago in their github account. Though, I couldn't manage it to work in the experimental version.
PrivateRiem  [author] 10 May, 2023 @ 2:39pm
This mod, even if the installation is somewhat wonky, is a temporary band-aid until we get the official gamelog back in the game, which should be coming in a few weeks/months. It does what it was made to do, and does it decently well, and adds a lot of information that has not yet been put back into the game. I did not expect it to take this long for the Gamelog and announcements to be put back into the game, but this is Dwarf Fortress we're talking about.

When those are finally put back into the game, this mod will become obsolete, which is what I'm looking forward to. In the meantime, it works as it should, as long as instructions are followed correctly.
Elkstone 29 Apr, 2023 @ 7:02am
Oh is it actually not a mod, that sucks
Zenny 16 Apr, 2023 @ 9:48pm
so it's not ready yet for the steam workshop. okay, i'll wait till it works then.
PrivateRiem  [author] 16 Apr, 2023 @ 5:29pm
@Zenny Currently it is impossible through the workshop to modify sound files, and announcement.txt. Eventually this will be fixed, hopefully, but for now the only solution is to modify the files by hand.
Zenny 16 Apr, 2023 @ 5:39am
weird that you have to manually modify game files for the mod to work. doesnt that defeat the purpose of being in the steam workshop?
Holyvision 21 Mar, 2023 @ 4:37pm
@Woahhjess TY for this -- I thought I had two saves die to this but the hard-removal of this seems to help. I only had this with DFhack for stonesense and when you get to be moderate size the contant training/etc "combat" just kills game.
uuuhdavid 6 Mar, 2023 @ 8:24pm
Oh also here's a PSA if you have a 2nd monitor -- the DFHack stonesense visualizer shows logs without you hovering over anything with this mod. So it's perfect to do a frame by frame thing
uuuhdavid 6 Mar, 2023 @ 5:57pm
Is there anyway to rebind the frame by frame keybind?
@sunnyhongyu我是盗号王 4 Mar, 2023 @ 12:11pm
Complicated? You just add 2 lines of text in the notes xD, then copy 2 files. one minute. Worth it really
Stormwynd 4 Mar, 2023 @ 9:09am
Looks way to complicated to use this mod. No way, but Im interested. maybe later when adding and deleting mods gets easier. but for now, this mod will for sure just my whole game up.
woahhjess 3 Mar, 2023 @ 11:42am
I had an old save file break (constant combat alert pinging) while using the Combat Logs mod - in case you encounter the same issue, here is what I did to fix my save file:

1. Unsubbing from the Combat Logs mod,
2. Removing its folder under Steam/steamapps/common/Dwarf Fortress/mods (Open each folder and check the "info.txt" file until you find Combat Logs)
3. Removing its associated data under Steam/steamapps/common/Dwarf Fortress/data/installed_mods
4. Under Steam/steamapps/common/Dwarf Fortress/data/init, find the "announcements.txt" file and edit [COMBAT_STRIKE_DETAILS:A_D:D_D:UCR:ALERT] back to ➡[COMBAT_STRIKE_DETAILS:A_D:UCR] and [COMBAT_STRIKE_DETAILS_2:A_D:D_D:UCR:ALERT] back to ➡
[COMBAT_STRIKE_DETAILS_2:A_D:UCR]
5. Opened DF, ensured the mod no longer showed under the in-game mod list, and voila! No more pinging 😎
beefjerkybros 19 Feb, 2023 @ 9:11am
damn, alright. thanks for the info
PrivateRiem  [author] 18 Feb, 2023 @ 7:23pm
@Beekferkybros the D_D was mentioned a month or so ago, and it was found that while it does give a secondary combat window, that one is not in real time. Only the Red Alert window is in real time. As for your other issue, it is unrelated to this mod and I have personally never experienced it, so sadly I can't help you there.
beefjerkybros 14 Feb, 2023 @ 2:05pm
FYI found a way to both keep announcement noises, and have a combat log. so what you do is replace UCR with D_D and it shows up as a sort of less important announcement so there's no noise, but still records every strike. Unrelated issue, but if I press . a bunch of times, my cursor seems to auto-move to the center, so I can't really follow combat in a non-annoying way, any idea how to fix this?
Ozel 7 Feb, 2023 @ 1:26pm
Wrote a response in agreement. Lost it as I realized I needed to turn off the update to DF to late. ;_; - But yes, I was looking into writing a plugin for dfhack... but it seems that getting the announcements delineated is buried a bit too deep for now. - That said, I appreciate you sharing your solution. Seeing the combat log flow with details is a win. I had to just stare in confusion as 20 of my dorfs started murdering each other the other night. I had no idea who started the fight or who was still fighting as bodies kept hitting the floor. :lunar2019deadpanpig:
