I wonder, is it possible to make gray z-fog above the ground and blackish-shadowy fog below ground level?

If anyone is curious this mod is still working for me. With it I can easily see things 8 z levels below the current.

I just noticed this mod has not worked for several months, iv made several new worlds when installing and uninstalling mods and just forgot about it. Then now i ran into a cave that was like 80z high and just thought to myself, "i cant see how this cave looks due to all that fog, did i not have a mod that reduces fog?"

@Bythetetractys, as of now officially you need to start a new map to use new mods, tho there are ways to edit your current vanilla tiles, read below for my response to Tamren for a possible workaround to adding this mod to a old save.

@Urist McSpaceminer, I'm glad you're enjoying the mod. As if right now I am not aware of the ability of modding just the level between Z0 -> Z-1 without modifying the rest as the method of modification is replacing the current z level fog tiles with a new image which are basically just single level tiles that are colored differently and have a different alpha transparency than the default. For each level down they layer another zfog layer on top. The best option I can think of at this moment to possibly help is modifying the air tile ( tile 3,3 ) on the current zfog.png with a darker glyph over the air tile so you can tell easier it's a rendered air tile and thus on a different layer. but with that i feel it would be quite a bit obtrusive when you have a lot of air space.

@xaen I've been using this mod for a long time and I love it, but there's one thing I'd like to tweak:
the amount of fog between Z0 and Z-1 is so slight, that most of the time I can't tell what is on this z level and what is one below without mousing over for that "open space" tooltip.

I don't suppose there's any way to increase the amount of z-fog on the FIRST drop, without affecting the 7 that follow?

@Tamren ... Officially no there is not a way, but since this is a graphics mod you can overwrite the vanilla textures. for this one it should work if you replace "Dwarf Fortress/vanilla/vanilla_environment/graphics/images/multilevel_overlay.png" with "Dwarf Fortress/mods/2899337501 (1)/images/reduced_grey_zfog.png" ... aka rename it to multilevel_overlay.png ... To revert it, save the original image and re-replace. I think verifying integrity of game files will work too but I have not tried.

Can this be applied to existing save files?
