Conclusion - Mod incompatibility... but what mod could possibly conflict with this one of all mods?
Investigation - enabled just this mod (game works fine); section by section, groups of mods are enabled, testing launch each time (game works fine); Even usual suspects that edit rosters are removed as suspects; and then.... CTD!!! for load order items 130-147!!!! Time to dig a little deeper and find which one is conflicting...
Disabled load order items 143-147 (game works fine); only 4 mods to check... BOOM! CTD on load order item 146. But before I jump the gun...
