will this be updated to work with other difficulties?

Any way to make it actually compatiable with the merciless combine mod? Without all the weird mod switching.

It's the must-have addon. Initial gameplay is good, BUT when you're shooting like 4-6 times in the head and an enemy won't die, it's frustrating. This addon fixes it. Guns now feel MUCH more realistic and dangerous, there are 1-2 shots to the head required to kill combines(and zombies btw). You now can actually use blindfire with guns - and it will be effective in some situations, since overall damage is increased(including INCOMING damage). 10/10 mod. And it works with custom maps too, simply enable it and begin a new game on highest difficulty. Tested with C17SCAPE campaign.

hate how underpowered the pistol feels in the game as opposed to the gunman maps, sure hope it fixes that!

Assuming nothing's wrong, the mod should appear in the mod list as usual, and once activated all you have to do is start any map on HARD difficulty for the changes to take place. But I updated the mod a while back and while at the time it seemed to have worked, perhaps I messed something up. I'll try to take a look sometime.

Have not tried this mod yet, but I want to thank you anyway for creating it. This is PRECISELY what I wanted in Half Life Alyx. I HATE bullet sponginess in ANY GAME WHATSOEVER. This game was amazing, but now it's about to be damn near perfect thanks to your work. Thank you.

Alright thanks for clearing that up! Is there an equivalent difficulty in this mod? I put it down to easy, but I seem to be pretty tanky. Trying to find that sweet spot where both I and the enemies die fast.
Girth Control  [author] 19 Oct, 2022 @ 3:47pm
Yeah, that's about right. The mod is only inspired by Gunman Contracts, it doesn't play exactly like it. I didn't want to make every enemy in the game die in two or three hits like in Gunman Contracts because the encounters in Alyx just aren't built for that, every combat sequence would be over in 5 or 6 seconds as there's far less enemies than in Gunman Contracts.

I was a bit confused at first, I thought this mod would make Easy/Medium/Hard basically reflect exactly to their counterparts in Gunman, but that doesn't seem to be the case? I tend to play Gunman on hard, so strong enemies, strong player. But by the looks of thing Hard mode in this makes the enemies more spongy again?

how can I apply this mod to maps with skill.cfg
cazanu 2 Sep, 2022 @ 2:44am
love this it works with virtually all addons and makes the combat feel perfect

Thank you for your mod, sir! Now game feels like HL: Alyx Wick
Gunplay is awesome btw.

I think keeping your mod more "vanilla" makes sense as it will represent a nice contrast to Merciless. You can also spawn a new mod and try to get more experimental. Thanks for your contribution to the community!
Girth Control  [author] 2 Mar, 2022 @ 8:04pm
That's awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time to provide so much feedback. Merciless definitely changes a lot more than my mod does, mostly because I'm not super familiar with modding. I mainly only adjusted stuff that was already in the skill.cfg file, and searched through the console for commands that I thought would exist such as enemy speed, locational damage on more than just combines, or weapon accuracy, but I couldn't find them.

Merciless is definitely the "superior" mod if you're looking for a new experience, simply because it does so much more than I was able to figure out. My mod is far more vanilla, and it'll probably stay that way as I just don't have the experience to do more than that. If I get a better understanding of how to mod the game, I might try something more ambitious.

Anyway, again thank you for so much feedback!

I decided to record a comparison video between Merciless and Gunman Combat Overhaul. For me personally Merciless is my clear favorite, but the more vanilla changes in GCO (minimal changes to enemy behavior/animations) might be more appealing to others. https://youtu.be/Cjqs0mFrOQA

That mod is incredible ! I've tried the Merciless one and I was so disappointed, it took so many bullet to kill headcrabs... This mod in comparison is everything I wanted. Things dies super fast, headcrabs, basic combine... some others put up some more resistance but it makes sense since they have a lot of armor.

Maybe the only thing I would want is to have some more enemies, as some gunfights really end fast. But I love it, I'm replaying the game again because it's so fun ! Thanks !

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into this. The pulse rifle accuracy hasn't been changed but the fire rate definitely has, I think it's already pretty accurate so I'll try looking into making it less accurate. I haven't heard of this "long visibility" toggle before so I'll look into that too!
I_Monarch_I 22 Feb, 2022 @ 8:44pm
I found the increased precision of the pulse rifle made the weapon encounters feel imbalanced. It was far too easy to dispatch enemies at range. That said, I did like the increased rate of fire . I may need more time to re-tune to the mechanics, but I felt the the combine were less lethal at range. This could be improved with the " long visibility " shoot toggle under the NPC properties. Might be an improvement in the " deadliness" overall.

Thanks for making. I've been using merciless by default since it launched. It's good to have some alternatives. I'll have to try this out for a while.
I_Monarch_I 20 Feb, 2022 @ 11:03pm
I am incredibly excited to try this out! It sounds perfect for my wide open , gunplay arena I'm about to publish.

I found the merciless mods too clumsy feeling with the way it chose to re balance, particularly in medium and longer ranged combat.

Thanks for this in advance :D
