Thank you again, feel free to message me if you'd like to chat again. Cheers!
I've mostly used Blender for creating 3D models for papercraft projects. I imagine Avorion models could be converted into .stl files for 3D printing, but I think Avorion ships are particularly suited for papercrafts. Having physical models (plastic or paper) of these creations would be wonderful to have.
I know quite a few people who are into ship building and space games, many of them are into Stellaris. Some probably play Avorion too. It's a small world...
Some of that is just running into design issues where I have to figure out how to do something that would have taken far less time in a conventional 3D program like Blender. But then I don’t have to UV map, normal map, and texture, anything so there are advantages too. The two are probably somewhat comparable.
I have some experience with SketchUp, Blender, Maya (a long time ago now in art school), and 3DCoat, but I’m not an expert by any means, more a hobby, but I too dabble some with 3D from time to time. I just generally never take them to a finished state, fully textured and all that. Certainly nothing like Paul Pepera.
But I have used some of my models as references for some of my creations in Avorion. Like my Andromeda, that had a fully modeled 3D version in blender that I made a while back for a potential Stellaris mod that will probably never be finished. But that model came in handy regardless.
I'd love to hear your response, how long did modelling the GD-72 Heavy Tug take?
I ask because these creations parallel professional 3D models (quad/polygon based ones) in quality. I'm comparing the time/effort spent on artistic Avorion ships to conventional models found in other media.
Thank you!
They changed how scaling works, specifically using the A, S, D, keys while using templates or just copied and pasted selections. It scales it along every axis x, y, z even ones I’m not altering to the nearest scale step. It changes the overall dimensions and causes misalignments.
There are ways to avoid it but they are either time consuming or require me to use a consistent scale step and not use numbers with many decimal places.
Long story short that change has made it nearly impossible to build things the way I have for most of my ships. So all of my planned builds are on hold and I have for now stepped way from Avorion. Sorry
