GD-72 Heavy Tug

Description
A small 161m long, 5,586 block, 5 slot civilian craft built to last.

Originally posted by Pan-Galactic News Network circa 2989:
"The Ki'Nyri Industrial Concern started developing the GD-72 "Gordon" in 2312 as a "Heavy Tug" designed to manipulate and maneuver other ships and objects many times its size in the Pre-FTL era. To achieve this the GD-72 made use of the internal space of its three "arms" behind the Electromagnetic Grips to house gargantuan Gyroscopic Arrays. One such craft is capable of manipulating a ship up to 1.24 million Tons at a reasonable rate. Powering the GD-72 is a A.E. 1200MW CFR (Compact Fusion Reactor). This massively powerful powerplant that predates postwar regulation by the Galactic Consulate means despite its age, and state of production, the GD-72 will be a perpetually present element of our current spacelanes. While the concept of the Tug died with the advent of Subspace Friction Propulsion, the ship has Marched ever onwards. Although its dated gyros and Electromagnets have long been removed, the void they have left has made room for retrofits of Shield Generators, Cargo Bays, fuel scoops and even weapons systems as used by numerous mercenary firms. Even though almost every part of a modern GD-72 has been replaced, prewar Imperial Type Certificates alone are worth hundreds of millions of credits. The Craft was used in many roles due to its impressive versatility and incredible reliability, even after taking battle damage. While there were some 14,400 examples produced during the Third Pan-Galactic War, most were pressed into Service as Makeshift Bombers, and subsequently destroyed, scavenged or scrapped. Surviving registered examples were sold as surplus by the fledgling Galactic Consulate. Although some remain in the hands of Criminals and some authoritarian sympathizers of the First League due to their lack of modern transponders, we can be assured its massive versatility will make it a utilitarian holdout among the most exclusive spacecraft in the galaxy."

This ship features:

Hull: 13.82K HP
Shields: 21.62 HP
Acceleration: 204 m/s
Deceleration: 308.7 m/s
Max Velocity: 692 m/s (with crew bonus 900m/s)
Yaw: 4 Rads/s
Pitch: 3.81 Rad/s
Roll: 4 Rad/s

A fair amount of block stacking including two 16x engine block stacking (main engines) and three 8x engines on the each end. To power this ship a 32x generator and for maneuvering she has four 32x thrusters packs 3 at the ends and one near the back of the main body. To improve stopping distance a 32x Inertial Dampeners has been added. Some frame works are available for later expansion.

Six size 1 turrets (included) and two open 1.5 turrets blocks.

It's long since past its functionality. Whether through updates or whatever, this ship not only has incredibly low roll/pitch/yaw (0.3-0.5) it also doesn't have any dock blocks. meaning it can't actually grab anything. Needs a huge update to be useful.

Thank you Lightmare for your kind words, This lore is in fact an early part of a larger collaborative lore effort in the community, let me know if you have any interest!

Great lore that has been created for this craft, I subscribed partly for that and because it is a good design.

I do think many of the most prominent Avorion artists have gone to art school, or have considerable experience with 3D. A commonality among all of us seems to be our childhood fascination with lego, I remember spending hours per day with them!

Thank you again, feel free to message me if you'd like to chat again. Cheers!

Thank you so much StarryWisdom, 65~75 hours is a really really long time! I spent some of my time looking closer at the GD-72, and it continues to amaze me. I particularly like the fine detailing of the cockpit with its multiple terminals. It's the little things that show the love and care put into the model.

I've mostly used Blender for creating 3D models for papercraft projects. I imagine Avorion models could be converted into .stl files for 3D printing, but I think Avorion ships are particularly suited for papercrafts. Having physical models (plastic or paper) of these creations would be wonderful to have.

I know quite a few people who are into ship building and space games, many of them are into Stellaris. Some probably play Avorion too. It's a small world...

I would say many of the people making really good ships on the workshop probably have at least some artistic sensibility, talent, or training. At the very least probably some of them built a lot of lego creations as a kid, raises hand. :steammocking:
