ive got quite a few speed boosts for research and it still takes me a fair while to unlock new things :)

What if it ignored all the ones BUT the last one.
There is an alert that also says something along the lines of "No research selected" which could be another trigger for the pause instead of just the "X researched" alert.
Or I could be talking out of my ass and both of these are from mods rather than vanilla..
Alternatively, could make an option that makes it that it only pauses if you got no researches queued anymore?
i thought i was being clever with my room adding in lots of different linkable buildings and brains in a jar to get a high boost, but never thought of your design :)
