Can confirm that the punching bug remains. If you remove items from your first hotbar slot you can punch again, so you can definitely play a new character.

Once you craft your first tool it's a nonissue, but still just annoying to have to clear your first slot every time you pick something new up.

Is there a way I can keep the durability info but not the keeping of broken items?

Started a new character with this mod and the character loses the ability to punch. Effectively boxing you into the beginner area, unable to play the game
