Better Balanced Woodie has been updated to V1.1.1. The changes are as follows.

  • The mod should load now but only the Lucy changes will work.

It was a lot of fun developing this mod and I'm glad other people were able to enjoy it. Unfortunately most of the functionality Woodie once had is now completely removed in the Woodie refresh update. Due to this the mod won't work as it was originally intended to.

It might be possible to restore some functionality but there are no plans right now as a LOT has changed behind the scenes related to Woodie. And it's likely that more will be changing because the refresh has been highly controversial.

Better Balanced Woodie has been updated to V1.0.5. The changes are as follows.

  • Transforming into Beaver only restores sanity.

Basically Woodie could turn into beaver, kill a bunch of enemies until he is at low health and transform back into Woodie. Players could then turn back into beaver restoring their health pool then fight more enemies and repeat. Woodie/Beaver basically got a full health refill for almost no cost. (Chopping a few tree's.) This change makes Woodie's much stronger Beaver form less spammable. I will be continuing to evaluate the Beaver form's health and possible reworks to this mechanic.

Better Balanced Woodie has been updated to V1.0.4. The changes are as follows.

  • Transforming into Beaver now restores all stats.

  • Transforming into Human now lowers all stats to singleplayer values.

These changes are for a couple of reasons which I will explain below.

Transforming into Beaver now restores all stats.

Single Player beaver was interesting in that players could transform into him in a dire situation in an attempt to survive. DST does not allow this as Woodie shares the same stats with Beaver and transforming in a dire situation preserves Woodie's potentially low health. This change is intended to partially emulate Beaver's single player seperate health pool by giving the Beaver a "seperate" health pool which is swapped to on transformation. Which leads us to the downside....

Transforming into Human now lowers all stats to singleplayer values.

By transforming into a human Woodie now has a harder start with lower stats. With this mod Beaver has been substantially buffed, most notably removing the sanity drain as beaver allowed Woodie to transform into a Beaver and back with basically no downsides. I can't re-implement the sanity drain as it makes Beaver useless for bosses. This change is intended to nerf Beaver by giving Woodie a downside upon transformation into a human without harming beaver's combat ability. Transformation now requires careful planning by the player to not transform back to human form in a situation where they could easily die, requiring more skill from players who choose to play Woodie. It also restores some of Woodie's single player identity which was lost upon Klei's porting to DST.

  • Woodie can consume charcoal draining 5 points from the wood meter.

  • Fixed a bug where the wood meter did not drain properly during a full moon.

Woodie is unique in that his transformation is almost entirely controlled through actions regarding objects in the world. (Chopping tree's.) In vanilla Don't Starve it works but some mechanics that have later been implemented such as wildfire's (ROG) and forest petrification (ANR) that can destroy strategically placed tree's a Woodie player could use to transform. The Woodie player does not have much control over these mechanics making it difficult to transform into a beaver at an optimal time. Even worse some terrain cannot support tree's and must be moved with a pitchfork while ruins terrain cannot be moved at all. Secondly in a multiplayer environment other players can chop, burn and otherwise destroy tactically placed tree's a Woodie depends on to transform. Transformation based on interactions with the environment does not work as well in a multiplayer environment as interactions between other players and tactically placed tree's are outside of the Woodie players control. To help solve these problems Woodie can now consume charcoal depleting 5 points from the wood meter. This also gives him greater freedom in managing his transformations while requiring more planning from the player. While players can eat charcoal to transform into a beaver they must plan on leaving wood on the ground to transform back into human form.
