AFS Explorer-Class Mk.V

Description
A shipyard-level refit of an Alterran Fleet destroyer due to be retired from service, vessels slated to undergo upgrade to the AFS Explorer-Class Mk.V designation will undergo extensive inspection and testing of their core systems before work commences.

Both exterior engine nacelles are gutted, as is the aft half of the reactor room. The removed equipment is replaced with a pair of military Jump Drives, a full hydrogen thruster array in the nacelles, and the three best-condition ion engines are moved into a new triple-drive mount on the vessel's centerline.

Environmental system upgrades remove the original Bronze-class destroyer requirement that crew be suited and helmeted at all times (even during off-duty rest hours!), and lessons learned during service have resulted in significant quality-of-life upgrades that range from improved display panels to better bunks and a small lounge/movie theater for off-duty personal during long missions. An automatic airlock system has been installed to complement this, reducing accidental oxygen loss and helping to extend the effective patrol duration of the new class.

Logistics systems upgrades have eliminated the need for loaders on the vessel, reducing the effective crew complement required for combat operations by half, and allowing for system-standard exterior connectors to be used to speed up resupply and replenishment stops.

Automation improvements have allowed the replacement of spaces originally designated for docking controls and the lower observation room with onboard hydrogen and oxygen storage systems, as well as a small medical suite to maintain crew health and assist with combat triage.

At this time, only D01 Fulvus has completed the upgrade to this designation, and it remains to be seen whether the Fleet will invest resources into the refit and life extension of older vessels through this program, or undertake production of additional vessels to the new "Challenger" class variants while retiring older ships.

Though the faction's have since changed, it all still fits very nicely into the history of it. You've got a damn fine eye for this.

@Conrad Larson - Thank you! I'm glad that I was able to do justice to your original design without mucking about too badly with your lore!

I absolutely love this thing, and more than that I love the lore piece you've written. It's very much in keeping with the spirit of my workshop creations.
