Hivewide Hunt — VFEI2 Patch (RimWorld 1.6)
Lightweight Harmony patch for VFE: Insectoids 2 hunter AI. Safe for existing saves.

Support: Bug Reports • Suggestions & Balance (see Discussions tab)

What it does
There were several people, including myself, who had issues with the hunter class of insects not hunting when the animals/wildlife were marked. After much research I found out that they only hunt when they're hungry and there's no food in the marked hive area. This fixes that and forces them to hunt marked wildlife along with implementing pack hunting mechanics! I created this mod for myself, but as I saw several comments in the VFEI2 thread, thought that I should add this to the interwebs for everyone to use.

Hunter-designated insectoids (VFE Insectoids 2) will immediately hunt any wildlife you mark with the Hunt designation anywhere on the map while still respecting needs (eat/sleep). Adult-only gating, optional pack hunting, and a performance-friendly prey cache + filter (off by default). Save-game safe.

Features
- Map-wide targeting of Hunt-designated wildlife for VFEI2 hunter insects
- Adult-only checks (larvae/juveniles use vanilla behavior)
- Optional pack hunting (by hive or radius; max helpers configurable)
- Optional prey filters (body-size range, allow predators, exclude “boomer” types, max manhunter-on-damage chance, whitelist/blacklist)
- Lightweight caching for good performance

Settings (Mod Settings → Hivewide Hunt)
- Enable/disable the mod (default OFF)
- Pack hunting: on/off, by hive or radius, max packmates, join radius
- Health/bleed gates: min health %, max bleed rate (each can be disabled)
- Prey filter: size range, predator/boomer toggles, manhunter cap, lists
- Debug logging toggle (default OFF)
- Restore Defaults button

Tip: After changing settings, draft/undraft hunters once to refresh their jobs.

Compatibility
- RimWorld 1.6
- Save-game safe (Harmony patches only; nothing serialized)
- Generally compatible. If another mod also patches hunter AI, last load order wins.

Notes
- Hauling after a kill remains vanilla/VFE behavior (no forced hauling).
- If hunters seem idle after changing settings, draft/undraft them once.

FAQ
- Hunters won’t haul? Hauling after kill remains vanilla/VFEI2 behavior.
- Pack hunting not triggering? Ensure “Enable pack hunting” is ON; draft/undraft to refresh.
- Injured hunters idle? Check “Use min health” and “Use bleed-rate” gates in settings.
- Performance? Prey cache + filters are lightweight; turn filters OFF for maximum speed.

Yes I did. I'm not an artist nor am I a programmer. It's basically the original VFEI2 thumbnail as you can see. All I did was patch the og mod. Nothing more. Nor did I claim the thumbnail nor contents of VFEI2 as my own. The thumbnail I care nothing about so much as what the patch/mod does. I created this not for attention, nor to get famous, but simply as qol patch/mod for myself that anyone was welcome to use or to modify as they see fit. Which was stated in the description. If you have suggestions for me to add/subtract whatever I'm happy to learn to code that and add it to this.

I agree with you 100%. I thought the exact same thing and couldn't find an answer anywhere about this or the default behavior. So I decided to make it myself. This is my first ever mod so if there are any issues or if all yall have any recommendations please let me know!

Thanks for this. IMO I think it should be this way in the original mod but I'm glad you made this. It makes total sense to use insectoids to hunt for the colony, not just for themselves.

A hive-minded group of insects would be hunting for the whole hive instead of on their own individually

I see thank you for explaining

If you are referring to the original mods default behavior, they will only hunt the animal closest to the hive, marked or not, if they are hungry (<10% food need if i remember right), and there is no insect jelly, or valid non rotting carcass nearby (theyre lazy and will go for easiest first.) Otherwise, they will wander. They also do not pack hunt. It's also random as to which insect goes. It could be the adult or it could be the fresh larva (my testing found it's usually the fresh larva that goes to hunt to feed the adults)

Great question. This is supposed to be as close to vanilla/ VFEI2 as possible. As such, if there is no food, they will hunt both like VFE is originally designed (wildlife closest to hive regardless if it is marked or not), and then this "patch" i designed will override the default behavior forcing the hunt if you have marked wildlife to be hunted. If the hunt is forced, they will eat the wildlife they killed prior to hauling it.

Will they also hunt when hungry and there is no food
