Description
This can ultimately considered a quality of life mod that has a subtle balance impact:

This mod creates several proving ground projects that become available whenever you have spare weapons in the HQ inventory and the required techs. Right now it only handles basic weapons and armor, no vektors, autosnipers, grenade launchers or any of that. There may be some errors, It was a lot of copy pasting of a lot of values, but I think i caught all the big screw ups. Lemme know.

In short, you stick a laser rifle into the proving ground project and pay a small retrofit tax, and in a few hours it spits out a mag rifle. Any attachments you had on the donor weapon are lost, so strip loose weapons before retrofitting them.

This is expedient, but it is not a cost effective process. You're saving a little bit on alloys and elerium but you're paying a tax in supplies, and obviously the 'donor' weapon is destroyed.

In the short term it's a very handy way to upgrade some old gear rather than sell it to the black market, but the total cost per weapon is higher despite being amortized over iterations.

Basically, you're recycling your old guns to save some resources in exchange for time spent in the proving ground.
All costs are configurable in the INI.

Why I made this:

Often while researching a new weapon tech tier, I find myself holding off on building gear that is soon to be obsolete, since it will likely only see use in one or two missions before the next tier is done. rather than making a 'disposable laser rifle' while researching mag weapons, i wanted to enable a build path so that 'old' laser rifles weren't just thrown away for 10 supplies on the black market or left collecting dust in the inventory as potential hand me down weapons for rookies. So instead you take the old item, throw it at engineering, and let them give you back a better item at a discount. The total cost is technically higher than just building the new gun, but the immediate cost is lower.

Duly noted. Thank you!

@garr Spider+warden = wraith in this mod, but tbh I haven't tested that particular retrofit, should work though

I really wanted such a mod for armour. Like upgrading your Spider suits into Wraith, or EXO into WAR.

@arreen I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think something in LWOTC hard disables breakthroughs - there's probably a workaround or something but that's too intrusive for me. I'm fine with 'easy' mods like this, overwriting other people's exclusions is above my pay grade.

I'd love to see a mod that brings the Breakthrough techs into the LWotC game as basic research or a proving grounds project and maybe also with a good strong resource cost to it.

Still, I appreciate this mod very much. Thank you for making it.

@Zero Sounds like an interesting concept for an addon.

@mrMister

The framework for the mod is relatively simple - it's just a generic tech project for the proving ground that makes ItemTemplate goes in - new ItemTemplate comes out - if you follow the same structure you could make a version of this that handles whatever you want. I just did basic gear, but you could do whatever into whatever if you clone the examples in this mod. Like if you wanted "convert sniper into auto-sniper" or "convert Skulljack into Elerium nuke" or whatever.

I'm just sticking with basic LWOTC gear for this because I want this to stay tight and balanced, but I definitely considered doing fun stuff like 'dead-end retrofits' to unique weapons.

Toyed with an idea of "mag-laser shotgun" - like retrofitting a laser shotgun to mag tier gave you a unique un-upgradable version of the mag shotgun that lost 1 damage but kept the laser +5 aim, but I didn't want to accidently impact meta with my arbitrary valuations.

mh okay i'm interested. gotta admit it's a valid source of annoyance that the old gear has to be sold to the market to avoid inventory clutter.

Of course the "compatible tech only" would make more sense in LW1's context, where T2 is Laser and T4 is Better Laser, but still.

It'd be interesting if there were options to, for instance, only allow laser-> coil and mag->plasma conversions, with some "compatible tech only" justification (the gameplay effect is the point though).
