Description
Play as the Mad Caliph, Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah; in Sid Meier's Civilization VI.

Berber civilization was conquered by the Arabs between 647 AD - 709 AD, leaving pockets of resistance across the Sahara Desert. Unlike Iran, the Berbers did not seize the homeland and would instead compete with waves of Arab and later Turkish migration waves. Though Berbers lived an uneasy coexistence with the Arabs, they would still attempt to carve their own confederations and states from the remnants of Arab powers for the next several centuries. The Ismaili Imamate, later known as the Fatimid Caliphate, would foster a power-base in Tunisia before subduing the Maghreb and the Mashriq by means of Berber cavalry. The bulk of the Maghrebi forces came from the Kutama tribe with a minority hailing from Sanhaja federations, resulting in the early Fatimid Caliphate being Barbary state. Gradually the state migrated to its newly founded capital of Cairo upon the Nile, there an influx of Arabs, Copts, Daylamites, Turks, and even Armenian refugees would displace the Berber-based power structure of the Ismaili Empire. After their final defeat in 1073 AD, the Kutama would retreat to hinterlands of Constantine where they continued their transhumance lifestyle among other Berbers like the Kabyles. The Fatimid Caliphate collapsed soon after, ultimately leaving a legacy of dawah and mahdist though on Egypt and the Mashriq.
