This is a work-in-progress

This mod adds realistic spoilage and decay timers as well as the ability to freeze them to non-perishable foods in Project Zomboid. Ultimately prevents certain food and ingredients from lasting beyond eternity while bringing balance and the concept of realism to the game's core.

However, the implementations that are made has only been done in a very small scale starting with dry food category. And these foods does not have rotten food icon sprites, but wouldn't really affect the overall experience.

I'm new to modding world and i chose Project Zomboid to learn coding in LUA language, scripting, modelling and other mod-related works as I go — this is my first mod ever! Right now, it's been tested only on a small scale using the Build 42 unstable branch, but I plan to expand support to Build 41 and eventually cover all relevant food items with accurate decay mechanics based on real-life expiry data. Followed by that, please be informed that there will be risk of unexpected bugs that could pop up anywhere.

Please do not reupload the mod without contacting me first.

Compability Info❗:-

- The mod requires to be added into a new save. It wouldn't work as intended when being added mid-save because of the previous vanilla food distribution has taken effect. It may semi-work in existing saves if the loot respawn is enabled, but you will have to wait for the loot to respawn to see if it works as this only a theory.

- The mod only has supports for Build 42.0.0 and later! Build 41 is still in WIP which i need to work on foods and drinks from B41 scripts.

- For mod compability from other mods to mine or from mine to others, i am not able to focus on that yet anytime sooner. But feel free reach out to me first! I will write them down in my list.

🔭 Current Scope :-

- Implementing expiration to entire food subcategories (dry,wet,drinks,sealed,packaged)

- Add the ability to freeze certain food,ingredients and condiments for more longer lifespan

- Modify and replace other existing food/drinks expiration date with more accurate data

💡 Planned Feature Ideas :-

- Negative Malus addition/changes for stale and rotten dry food ingredients

- Rotten food smells/negative moodle effect

- Optional realism settings

- Compatibility patches and early Build 41 support

i could use your idea and implement such as "Best used before: (date)" that i could insert daysfresh of the food. but when i think about it i havent really understand to code a LUA to retrieve players game date because to implement this the food expiration date has to be dynamically adjusted along with players desired game start date.

i haven't take a look or tried sapph's cooking mod or even test with my mod, but is it really incompatible? so far this mod only edit vanilla food properties, which i am surprised people asking about compability with sapphs cooking mod

yes the chances for food to go rotten is random handled by the game randomizer table, the ones i edited are max days for food before having 100% chance to be rotten.

At first I thought this was adding a visible expiration date for food items, that would have been great. Way too often I have food items showing as 'Stale' and I have no idea how much time I have left for using the item before it's 'Rotten'.

Bro, the best thing to be done in this mod is a compatibility update with sapph's cooking.

I just thought of something and i don't know if this have been brought up before or have been worked into them mod yet.
Is the days until an item goes rotten random? in that sense that it simulates it maybe have been in that house for maybe 100 days before you start your playthough? Or is this to hard to implement?
Is it also possible to see how long till each items experies?
