More Variety, Less Micromanagement!
If you've been paying attention to my freight car mods, you may have noticed they've all been exactly the same size. This mod is the reason for that.
This mod contains one car, the randomizer to rule them all. This car can carry any cargo type and the model of the car will change to whatever is appropriate: boxcar, gondola, tank car, or hopper. It will also choose a random skin. Every freight car in the image above is the same vehicle as far as the game is concerned.
Is this balanced? No. If the challenge of making money on harder difficulties is what you're looking for, this car is like a cheat code. If you just want to watch trains this car eliminates some of the tedium of matching car types to line rates in mixed trains and allows for natural variety in your trains between hubs that carry multiple cargo types. Every train that passes will be different!

As an amalgamation of my other cars, it has similar stats:

Stats:
Top Speed: 65 mph
Capacity: 13
Cargo Types: All Freight
Weight: 25 tons
Available: 1920-1960

Note, you'll need all of my previous freight car mods to use this. No meshes are actually included with this mod, it's just a model which uses the parts of all of my other cars.

@Angry Squid Are you using custom cargo mods? If so you'll need my compatibility patch: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3467033118

These cars work by making the car bodies themselves custom loads which change depending on the cargo carried. By default these are only defined for the vanilla cargo types. My compatibility patch mod goes last in your load order after both your vehicles and custom cargo mods are loaded. It will detect whatever cargo types are added by your other mods and then update the custom cargo model data for cargo types where it's missing.

Okay, third time tried. the four required mods are confirmed to be present and active. and this mod still inserts blank/nothing spaces with nothing but wheels on the track instead of carts and goods. It's clearly trying to insert something random ... some wagons show up ... others ... do not. I don't know if it's a missing required mod that isn't highlighted, a change in one of those required mods that now breaks this one, or something else ... but unfortunately ..... this is a none starter here in september 2025.

I'm going to give this one more try by unsubscribing, re-subscribing, verifying reported dependencies ... but it seems like a flaky mod. twice now I've tried this and cars sometimes ... just aren't there. no cargo, no car, just wheels.

Do you have the loads mod for the gondolas? Logs should show up for them.

Only issue with the generic skins is that the car wouldn't be colorable since they're technically custom loads, but generic skins in default colors only could work.
