How do you even enter this route?
At the end of the cambrai arc of the story, you get a Route split.

Simply refuse Northampton’s offer (if your rep with him is 80 and above) and refuse De Montfort’s mercenary contract and you’ll be forced to wait with the rest of the peons in Dunkirk to finally return home to England.
The Pre-Trip
So you’ve chosen the simple life, away from war, hookers and phat loot. Now you’ve just gotta make it home without starving to death.

Choose to Starve if you hate yourself and want to lose your hard earned stats.

Hand over equipment simply opens up a trading page, where you can sell and buy items to get enough gold to make the payments in the option I haven’t mentioned.

Leaving and re-entering this option will refresh the trade page.

Buying food for Money

Eating well is the only option that doesn’t lose you stats.

Eat Mediocre results in you losing 1 from all of your stats, with each option below that losing you another 1 point from all stats.

That means starving loses you 4 from all your stats.

Don’t do it bros, just eat good.
A Leisurely Cruise
So the boats finally here, and you get to go home.

But you’re a low ranking scrub and you don’t get to take your chest with you.

So you’re going to need to leave your chest behind to continue. And all the gold you’ve spent to upgrade chest capacity?

Lol, lmao. Kiss it goodbye.

You get the opportunity to collect all the ♥♥♥♥ you’ve stored in there, hope you’ve strengthmaxxed enough to carry it all haha.

I managed to pass this coordination check with around 20+.
Sweet Home Maidenstone
So you’ve arrived in Dover.

There are 2 options for this portion. Both will leave you penniless.

Going for the inn will require 10 Florins, but will cost you your entire wallet, stolen while you were asleep. Hey at least all your fatigue is gone.

Travelling at night will leave you with a concussion, as your ass is beaten and robbed of all your gold.

The optimal option is obvious, since you’re going to lose all of your money anyway.

And just like that, you’ve made it home to Maidstone. Feelsgoodman.

I hope you like Loans.

Now this is the best possible result, obtained with 100 Virtue and 106 Prestige. Lower amounts of these will result in higher weekly late fees and higher interest rates.
Helpful tips for the Trip Home
If it isn’t blindingly obvious by now, this route seeks to starve you of liquid currency. This is to produce the driving narrative force to sign up with the bandits just to make ends meet.

So really, long as you have 310 florins to not lose stats and to pay for a good night’s sleep at the inn you’ll be fine. Anything above these 310 Florins you are going to end up losing no matter what.

So what, are we just supposed to sit there and kiss all that money we’ve earned from killing the French goodbye?

Listen here kids, let me teach you all a little bit of RL money laundering.

You use your dirty, dirty little florins, to buy expensive premium things that you carry back to wonderful little Maidstone, England. If you are guaranteed to lose liquid currency, then simply purchase assets that can be liquidated later.

But there’s only so much you can carry, pumping strength helps but only to a certain extent. A good idea if you really want to optimize is to equip a trinket that increases carrying capacity.

But, a little bit of selectiveness in what you choose to bring back goes a long way.

Don’t bother bringing back anything you can buy in Maidstone.

Alchemy kits, fletching tools, sewing kits, these are worthless to us because they are easily available to us in Maidstone. Crafting mats are also pointless*, with Maidenstone being abundant in resources.

*If you have rare crafting mats like visors and unknown toxins, dear God bring them along.

Consumables like canteens, alcohol, medicines and poisons either go in whatever belt pouch you have but are ultimately not a priority.

Weapons and Shields can be worth it, if they’re high in gold value. Tower shields are wonderful and can be acquired if you’re lucky by asking the sergeant in Cambrai. IMO, don’t bother if they’re below 150 in gold value.

Trinkets are tricky because some of them you may want to keep not because of gold value, but because of the utility they provide. But if you’re prioritising gold value. The ring you get from Eva and the Mask you get from Cecilia are great items to bring over. Really this is entirely up to your build and goals.

Armor, especially mid to high tier armor, are your big ticket items. These are worth bringing over for the sheer liquid currency value they provide. Crafting is a great way to turn low and mid tier armor into high value assets.

Obviously you should be having armor that gives prestige in every single slot of your character. Because, as seen in the previous section, prestige plays a role in the terms of your loan. People who look rich just have it easier bro.
Welcome to the First day of the Rest of your Life
Rather immediately going into the granularity of the Civil Route, let me first give you an over view of the route

You have 3 weeks total. When the timer runs out, you simply progress to next week, until the end of the 3rd week.

So what can you do each week?

More of the same really, except for the activities and affairs tab, that’s new.

Going to the Tavern via the Socialize tab will take up 1 time and cost you 45 Florins up front but will restore a large amount of fatigue. They can also unlock events you can participate in or new merchants to make purchases from.

How this works is that you get 2 tavern events a week. And the first 2 times you visit the tavern per weekly turn, you’ll get one of them. Some may be unavailable depending on virtue levels.

Day Work
For some fatigue gain, and a passed Strength check you will get 15 Florins.
Not really a good option unless you have nothing better to do.

Craftsman/BlackSmith/Alchemist
The first time you choose any of these options you will be prompted to pay a sum to buy and set up the equipment to take orders from your home.

This will cost 30 Florins. (40 for the blacksmith)

From there you will get 2-3 orders a week, with around 7 to 8 orders throughout the 3 weeks.

Each option is associated with its own possible ending. To achieve that ending you will need to complete all the requests associated with their line of work by the last week.

Look for a job
You will get one of the Jobs available that week. Job availability differs on a week to week basis. So if you don’t take a job within its week, then it is simply gone.
Slammer Blues
If for any reason you are imprisoned one of 2 things will happen.
  • You get the ‘choice’ to join up with the Army under Canterbury.
  • You get broken out of jail by Duncan’s men and you join up with them.

The first is the default, the second is unlocked by telling Rodolfo and Jones that you will think about it when they give you their offer to join up with Duncan.
The Wonderful World of Taxation
Medieval life was chock full of weird taxes and Maidenstone is no exception. It is very easy to get blindsided by some of these the first time round, so let me go through them.

Maidstone town tax: 33 Florins
This will happen after some time during week one and only once.

Trading license + Fine: 211 Florins
If you trade enough items through the Trade command, you’ll get visited with this one time fee.

Scavenging Toll: 56 Florins
Every time you use the scavenging function you get hit with this. Just to break even on gold you’ll need Hunting Sword + Hunting Knife + Huntsman talent. Of course, you do get to keep everything you successfully loot.

Job Tax: 50 Florins
Should you choose to set up any of the Craftsman/BlackSmith/Alchemist trifecta you will get hit with a hidden one time tax of 50 Florins.

If you do set up all three of them, it will cost you 150 Florins.

Rent: 300 Florins
At the end of every week, you need to pay your rent.

Debt: Variable amount
At the end of the first week if you have enough money you will pay out the sum, if not then your weekly late fee gets added on. Paying off the debt counts as quest completion.
Craftsman/BlackSmith/Alchemist Requests
You should not be attempting any of the specific Civil Life endings without a high craftsmanship score. I Won’t be covering the Blacksmithing requests because a guide for those already exists here:

Tavern Events
Collapsed Bridge
To get anything of worth, you need to first pass an endurance check to get to the bottom of the lake. Then for each item you want to loot, you have to pass a coordination and luck check. WIth each item you take costing you more and more coordination points and fatigue.

When you surface however, you immediately get jumped by bandits, who demand everything you’ve taken.

Choosing to fight them will of course throw you into combat with… eh they’re kinda weak.

Smugglers
Locked behind Low Virtue.

Lol, and lmao at suffering through the low virtue experience.

Soldiers
A bunch of ex-soldiers offer to sell you their gear. They will now be accessible from the socialization menu.

Their offerings are non-renewable:
  • Aventail
  • Open Bascinet
  • Face Protection
  • Gambeson
  • Hauberk
  • Mail Armor
  • Plackart
  • Buckler
  • Greaves
  • Combat Axe
  • French Halberd
  • Flanged Mace
Week 1
Special Event:
A Visit from Duncan’s men.

Near the end of week 1 you get paid a visit by these 2 charming gentlemen.

You can chase them out, and end the event immediately.

Or you can hear them out and choose to accept, reject or to say that you’ll think about it.

  • Accepting will immediately sign you up with Duncan.
  • Rejecting locks off the Bandit Route.
  • Thinking about it will lock in the bandits saving you if you get imprisoned.

Jobs:

Personal Trainer
Time cost: 2
Wage: 150 Florins
You will require around 60+ Prestige to get the job out right.

Having a Prestige score around 50+ will result in an indecisive result, which leads to a further test of your Weapon Skill and Luck. With 35 weapon skill, which is the highest you can train up to, success still came down to luck. So make sure prestige is high or equip a trinket that increases Weapon Skill.

The Boy who Cried Wolf
Available: Week 1
Time cost: na
Wage: 50 Florins

You’re up against wolves.

They’re not too dangerous for any well built character, but there are 7 of them. They are an excellent source of leather so make sure your inventory has the space for it.
Week 2
No Special events this week, just work work work.

Jobs:
Roadhouse
Wage: 3x 150 Florins

How this job works is that you will face 3 combat encounters over 3 different visits to the tavern from the map.

Each encounter pays 150 Florins.

The game makes it very clear how to disable instead of kill.

But in simple terms do one of the following:
  • Max out their fatigue
  • Inflict 3 injuries
  • Get their hp to 10% of its value

If you kill anyone, you will be sent to prison. To avoid this, the safest way is to target enemies’ limbs with batter. To build up fatigue without causing too much damage. The blackjack trinket is extremely helpful here if you have it.

Encounter 1:
If you have low virtue you will start this encounter drunk. This is in fact an achievement, if you are achievement hunting.

Enemies: 4x weak, inebriated bandits

Nothing all that special about these 4, they have low stats, have alcohol to buff themselves, and are armed with literal chairs. If things get really dire (for them), they might even pull out their actual weapons.

Encounter 2:A successful strength check will scare off a troublemaking patron, but you’re still going to have to go up against a drunk knight.

Enemies: 1 drunk ass knight

The Knight isn’t that strong, just a step above the average bandit really. Just make sure to keep all the rules for non-lethal subduing in mind.

Encounter 3:
You are going to have to beat down a brawl between the local town guard soldiers and another dude’s soldiers.

Enemies: 3x unruly ragged ragamuffins

These guys are no stronger than your common bandit, and like the first encounter are armed with chairs.
Week 3
No special events, don't you just love the grind?

Jobs:
Hunting Monsters

You fight a bear. No joke, a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bear. Travel to the Weald from the map screen and get your ass ready.

There is no gimmick to this fight, just be a chad and kill that bear. You’ll get a Bear Paw trinket, Prestige +1 and 100 Florins out of it.
The End?
Once the Three Weeks have come to an end, you get a choice.

Sign up in the army, or continue to live a normal life.

If you choose to live a normal life, then you’ll get one of the civil life endings, each dependant on whether or not you fulfilled all of their associated requests.

Or you end up a nobody, because you're a Loser.

Sign up in the army… well get ready to fight another war.

Hope you like standing your ground against cavalry charges.

This is actually incredibly helpful. Also, I don't need to get used to Taxes and Poverty - I'm already used to it. :(
