I eventually beat it in Normal but in Hard, the last phase is just invincible. Projectiles do nothing & melee attacks only hurt myself no matter how clearly my body isn't touching the boss.

Edit: I eventually beat it on Hard & didn't even die. For whatever reason, using Lucy's up smash while standing in a card does hurt the boss & that's the ideal way for her to deal damage so it works out pretty well.

Also, there needs to be an icon that lets me know how many health bars I have so I can restart instead of getting locked in the stats screen. Also, phase 3 seems to have about 30 times the amount of health it should. I've only gotten past it once & I don't even know how because I can hit it for like 3 or 4 minutes & it just doesn't end.

I like the general ideas here but there shouldn't be a stats screen if you lose & you shouldn't be forced to quit. That got exhausting the first time I lost.

Also, two things that might be glitches: When I get hurt, I often turn invisible instead of flashing. I sometimes get launched at an incredibly low angle & become incredibly heavy so I die at 0% because I can't move up.

The boss accelerate too fast in phase 3. I try to attack & get hit, putting me in hitstun so I get hit so I try to recover & get hit, then I recover successfully get hit when I land, then I adjust my timing & positioning so my attack is aimed right but the boss instantly turns around & blocks the attack. Then I get hit. I go through the whole process again & land the attack correctly. Then, I get hit. I reach the final phase with 30 HP, I try to attack, & the boss just deletes me in an instant.

I'm using Lucy. A fast character with great projectiles, great recovery, & great DPS who obliterates stage bosses.

Boss fights in rivals are often fun, especially when they are treated like characters and follow the rivals mechanics, but this one is a bit tough even on regular mode. The hitboxes constantly cover up the hurtboxes and make it almost impossible to fight nightmare unless you have disjoints. Also, yeah, it's literally impossible to fight the first two phases with projectiles, due to the entire body blocking everything off. This just makes the fight way more difficult than it already is. I get that it's canonically accurate, but it didn't have to be this literal about it.

that is true, in fusion phase 3 works kinda like that, nightmare closes in from the side of the screen then once it gets close enough it first moves away then it rams towards samus for a bit until it's brought back to the side of the screen or enough time has passed, I tried to mimick this in phase 3 so you technically can end the ramming early if you kite it to the side of the stage

I think Phase 1 is a bit harder than phase 2, because you get launched pretty far on a mistake, and again, it's a bit tricky to even get under Nightmare.

But really, the erratic movement of Nightmare in Phase 3, compared to Fusion, is what makes it tough to finish the fight. It's very punishing and makes hitting way less safe.

Yeah I was thinking of the charging end, I never remembered him going that fast in the game the only time I remember him going at the same speed was when you saw his shadow.
I need to replay fusion it has been like five years.

(also I chose samus because it was meant as a showcase)

here's a clip of me fighting nightmare as samus, I do think phase 3 (the one where nightmare straight up rams you) is the hardest one (as it should)

it's odd, because I feel that phases 1 and 2 (the initial one and the high gravity one) are the overall easier ones, especially because during high gravity you can simply get under nightmare and parry the shots while spamming up strong or something similar, heck, if you have a good horizontal disjoint you can even attack it from behind
