Knight Errant Custom

Description
1:1 scale replica of a Questoris pattern Imperial Knight, in the "Errant" configuration from Warhammer 40,000.
More precisely, that of the plastic kit I built and lightly customized recently.

I tried keeping it "tabletop-legal" so to speak, by not going too overboard -merely integrating the carapace mounted autocannons to the shoulder sockets, and moving the heraldic shield & heavy stubber (machinegun) normally found there to the right pauldron and the right gun-arm's co-axial slot normally kept empty on this specific variant.

In case you prefer the standard one, you may check out my "Paladin" version:

------------------------------------------------------

Built almost entirely out of rivets, heraldic imagery and righteous fury, Imperial Knights are medium-sized, single-pilot warsuits (mechs / walkers) that come in a number of weight classes and weapons loadout options, armed and armored so heavily that the presence of even one such suit all but guarantees victory (and an intense, yet mercifully brief existential crisis for your enemies) in most scenarios.

That a towering, 9 meter tall colossus of war would be considered "medium" says more about the battlefields of the 40th millenium rather than the suit itself.

They were originally built by the first scattered interstellar settlers who left the Sol system in search of a new life and found it unexpectedly hostile:

A Knight Warsuit would be large, tough & modular enough to stand against whatever threat tries to wipe out a colony, be it hordes of green-skinned barbarians, house sized monsters, or ghostly reavers dressed in blades, while able to freely move across the undeveloped wilderness of a fresh colony world, yet easy on their dwindling resources and manpower- as no aid or resupply would be coming.

Not merely "piloting" the suit like a clumsy walking tank that'd be swarmed and felled in no time, it's occupant would temporarily become one with the suit via a variation of the Mind-Impulse-Unit (direct neural link), sharing sensory data and motive commands between man and machine as if they were a single being. This device took the form of a heavy pilot seat and later became known as the "Throne Mechanicum".

Being the colony's lifeline and single most powerful weapon, it seemed like a prudent idea to include a hidden safety system;
The Throne would slowly & subtly alter the pilot's mind, reinforcing ideas like loyalty, honour, protecting the weak, and respecting the chain of command, thus ensuring none would go rogue or abuse their power.
Additionally, it'd store favourable thought patterns from previous pilots, further enhancing their successor's combat skills.

What nobody expected, is that within a few generations these subtle alterations would create a warrior caste who would talk, behave, fight, and live as stereotypical medieval knights, who'd eventually come to rule over their fellow settlers in a generally benign - yet rather backwards & feudal fashion.
Even less expectedly, it was precisely this backwardness, superstition & low-tech approach to everyday life that spared most Knight-Worlds from the worst horrors of Old Night (a time when uncontrolled technology & psychic mutation wreaked havoc across mankind's fledgeling empire), while their might proved sufficient protection from outside threats.

Millenia later, many knight worlds would reunite with & swear fealty to either the Mechanicum of Mars or the Imperium of Mankind, and continue to loyally serve still in M41-42.

---------------------------------------

In-game, the Knight Suit is a 9 meters tall mech with a few functions I hope you'll find interesting;

-To enter, climb atop the carapace's left side (as seen on the pictures) - a sensor-driven piston will reveal the button that opens the pilot hatch. From the inside, you can see it's paired switch on the left side of the dashboard.

-The interior lights turn on when the hatch is open or the player is seated.

-Take control by either of the two yokes.

-Exterior lights turn on when the mech is controlled.

-Head, shoulder mounts & right arm function as turrets and are taken control of automatically by piloting the mech.

-Tap [Mouse Left] to fire the "Thermal Cannon", a twin-barreled beam weapon on a limited-time blast.
Tap repeatedly for subsequent blasts.

-Hold [Mouse Left] to fire the coaxial "Heavy Stubber" and the shoulder-mounted autocannons - those even have recoil animation!

- Tap [Mouse Right] to stab, or Hold [Mouse Right] to backswipe with the Reaper Chainsword. Gun arm turret is deactivated during melee attacks to avoid getting stuck.
-If the weapon comes in contact with another entity or player during an attack, the logic system shoots off a set of beams hidden inside the blade to actually inflict "melee damage" on your target.
There are a number of safety circuits in place but this is more art than science;
If some of the Knight's parts appear to get stuck in attack pose, attack repeatedly while aiming forward & down to clear the issue. It's fairly stable though, so don't worry.

-Hit [G] key to activate / deactivate main docking units. These are for stowing the Knight suit.

-Hit [4] key to activate topside docking unit. Hold [4] key for 2 seconds to release it - You'll be given a message if it's occupied. This dock is for mounting additional weaponry.

-Switch at the lower rear portion opens the box holding the mech & turret computers.

-Cockpit has a life support unit.

-The mech has a custom walk animation with numerous moving parts. I would have animated the leg pistons as well, but the game can't handle those - hopefully only "yet"!

-Special thanks to Tsuna for creating a game where this monstrosity is even remotely possible. I knew games where this'd be 9 inert squares on top of each other. I knew a game where you'd need an engineer's degree to make it move, and even then it'd be a showpiece that could break any time.
You're doing awesome, man!
