Industry - Black Lung

Description

I wanted to make lignite and bituminous coal more interesting. Right now they can be easily replaced by woodburning, so instead I introduced a risk factor and more reward.

This mod introduces dangerous materials - lignite dust and bituminous coal dust.
To make the material not stand out, they are still called "lignite" and "bituminous coal".

Traders do not bring these materials (because they contain the tag [SPECIAL]), but embark allows to pick them.
Because of that, I have given them a "poison/danger" icon so you don't pick them instead of real lignite/bituminous coal:

Lignite/coal dust (that looks like normal stone and appears in clusters inside of lignite/bituminous coal), when mined and inhaled, introduces "black lung" syndrome.

Lignite has weaker effects, bituminous coal has stronger effects.

At first it causes shortness of breath and chronic cough. In later stages it causes lung necrosis and dysfunction, arthritis and dizziness. In most severe cases it can even cause suffocation.

To make the mining of lignite/bituminous coal still worth it, reactions to turn them into coke were doubled in output.

The original idea of black lung was brought up back in 2010 by Lofn on Bay12games forums. This mod implements the same idea, but a bit differently. For example, the syndromes are not as deadly, all of them are resistable, so using miners with high disease resistance produces better results

If you like the mod, you will make me happy if you rate it and share it with your friends. And remember, Losing is Fun!

The mod is compatible with anything as long as you play the dwarves (MOUNTAIN entity) and do not remove original lignite/bituminous coal.

It should go after vanilla files in the load order, as it patches vanilla entities and reactions.

@Deon I think this maybe needs to be slowed down as I keep finding black lung killing dwarves within months of embark (the cause of death is suffocation right?). My best guess is that black lung is stacking with alcohol's effect on breathing (and thus letting them drink themselves to death much easier) in a rough way.

Really like the idea of miners with high disease resistance, i think Tarn should really think about implementing more "poisonous" things that make digging more realistic and interesting. Like, you wanna get rid of elves population? Trade them Lead barrel if they have no knowledge of the health risk associated with lead, then after a few years they refuse anything that mix food drink and lead beceause they have civilization knowledge about it. I want a more evolving world when you begin at year 2 during the age of myth.

Perfect, now I just need asbestos and radium for the true dwarven safety experience.

Small 1.1 update, fully savegame compatible. It simply removes these "dust" materials from stone stockpile settings.

Very excited to try this out. It looks like you did great justice to this little old mod. Thank you.
