Heavy Capital Ship Turret - Siren

Description
-the reloading is now fully automated, at every angle and you dont have to stop aming or moving
all you have to do now is aim and press "1, 2, 3, 4," to fire, I integrated lights to offer feedback on the loading status
-added another 2 burst to the magazin, you can now fire the turret 7 times in a row with 3 shots each time

-I upgraded the ammo to deactivate the mass blocks after leaving the cannon, the cartridges also start spinning and
fire integrated thrusters, providing the capability to mostly ignore turret fire (it's not 100% sure every time, but the
chances are pretty good),
that stuff is automated as well, you don't have to care about anything (I love sensors :D )
-I added a platform with a beacon and turrets that will try to destroy incoming cartridges to show the effect of the improvements

-the maintenance area and the turret control room are now connected by stairs and also provide gravity for walking
around
-added a camera for remote control, although remote control is still a little akward for big ships (maybe I simply don't
get how to make it work properly :P), will include full remote control once I figured out how that works
-I integrated a number of gravity generators to make it easyer to integrate the turret into a ship, it is set to absorb 1g
from a ships regular gravity field. if u set up the gravity in your ship the same way I did it should be fine (it's a matter of the fields height)

The Siren is a fully rotating super heavy turret for the biggest ships available. It fires custom build cartridges filled with explosives with the capability to do serious damage. It holds 3 Cartridges at a time and can fire those in a single burst or one at a time. It can rotate sideways without restrictions (360° and further) and 48° upwards.

It can reload 7 times, resulting in a total 21 cartridges. It reloads at EVERY angle without a need to turn away from your target. The turret and the ship it is build into can rotate freely while reloading. This is achieved by integrating the whole reloading mechanism into the rotating part. The turret is designed to reload without leaving the pilots seat or pressing a single button. Once the 3 loaded cartridges leave the cannon it loads another 3 by using a massive number of sensors.

The cartridges are made of small ship blocks (3x3x7 in size). Each contains 4 artificial mass blocks, which are heavily accelerated by using a number of gravity generators when firing. Once the cartridge colides with the target a small explosive inside detonades the cargo container next to it holding a numeber of explosions. The resulting explosion has been nerved recently but is still capable of getting through armor and destroing soft systems within range of the detonation. After the first impact the next occurs, cause remember: burst fire :D Dig a tunnel through the armor and critical systems.

It is absolutly possible to build, reload and fire your own custom buil cartridge. Go crazy and post your designs.

How does the reloading work? The turret is mounted on top of a magazin, both build on a rotating platform. The whole system rotates sideways when aiming. There is a seperate loading crane Inside the actual cannon holding 3 cartridges at a time. The crane can be locked in place using a landing gear. It is designed to rotate in the exact same angle as the cannon does so it won't break during rotation up- and downwards. The reloading is automated by sensors but could still be done by hand.
If u want to do that, deactivate all sensors and use the shortcuts to unlock the crane and rotate it downward into the magazin. The Magazin is located right bleow the cannon. It contains 6 bursts (each holds 3 cartridges). The magazin is separated and holds 3 burst on each side. Pistons move them in place and landing gears switch the lock. The pistons move out of the way and the crane rotates back into the cannon. You can fire again now.

The firing is done by activating a smaller number of gravity generators to pull the cartridges. Each time you unlock a landing gear on the crane a cartridge gets pulled further into the cannon by a weaker field. A big number of gravity generators (precisely set to only affect stuff there) accelerate the cartridge to max speed. I mounted 2 rocket launchers in front of the cannon to help wit the aiming.

Everything mentioned could be controled with shortcuts from the toolbar in the pilots seat. The first group is mostly for firing and is all you need as long as you use the automated reloading.
The second group controls the left side of the magazin and the third one is for the right side (you only need those for reloading by hand).

First group:

1 - activate a small number to pull the cartridges from the crane into the cannon and into the acceleration zone
2, 3, 4 - each activates a landing gear holding a single cartridge on the crane; those are basically the trigger to fire

(from this point on you only need those keys for manual reloading!)

7 - lock/unlock the crane to the cannon
8 - rotate the crane down into the magazin and back up into the cannon
9 - activate the rocket launchers to show up those two red dots, the cartridges will hit exactly in the midle

Second group:

1 - activate the camera on the crane to show you when the crane has rotated into the magazine, it also helps with
finding out when the cartridges are moved in position

5 - move the second set of cartridges from the left side in position; and move the empty construction back in after u
locked the cartridges onto the crane; both uses pistons inside the magazine
6 - lock the 3 cartridges from the second set on the left onto the crane; and simultaneously unlock them from the
magazine construction

8 - move the third set of cartridges from the left side in position; and move the empty construction back in after u
locked the cartridges onto the crane; both uses pistons inside the magazine
9 - lock the 3 cartridges from the third set on the left onto the crane; and simultaneously unlock them from the
magazine construction

Third group:

-> does the exact same thing as the second group, just for the right side of the magazine

The world contains two variants. the seocond one is not enclosed and remains for those who want to understand how it works. It does not contain sensors so it wont annoy you with automated stuff while you try to understand the mechanic part. The design is pretty complex and I hope this makes it easyer.

The variant you start in is fully enclosed and heavily armored and should be still operational after several hits. Remember the ammo is not supposed to detonate within a ship/staion ;) I may be adding some smaller improvements or fixes to this.

I don't like to build ships ;) I am in for all kinds of complex mechanical stuff, but too lazy or busy to build a whole ship around it. Thanks to copy paste I don't have to and leave that to friends of mine. I wanted to share this one with everyone else aswell. i tried to make it as copy/paste friendly as possible. Use it as much as u like and if there is a part that can be improved, please tell me. I am pretty sure there are still some bugs with that design. It's too complex to spot them all by myself, although I tried pretty hard. Please report them (but make sure it's not caused by the turrets defensive fire). Have fun :D

Lol this thing is crazy. Gotta load this up again.

Wow that is a feat of engineering
Simply elegant!

why not a reload button in the magazin compartment that resets everything for you? would be a nice feature and notthat hard to do *g*

yeah i thought that ;) procedure remains the same

sorry i meant from the left side... the first magazin is the left one...

yep you have to turn off all sensors. reload and turn on the ones that are painted in yellow. good point though, I should make a short cut and a description

is there some kind of reset so that the magazin starts loading the bullets from the right side again?
Suicide_Jack 19 Sep, 2014 @ 3:25pm
the reload from the magazin works fine but reloading the magazin itself after all shots are fired proves to be somewhat dificult...

depends, which one do you use? the enclosed one shouldn't request any input from you. fire the cannon: press 1, 2, 3, 4. it should automate automatically after that. if it doesn't than i am missing something. pls tell me if thats the case

a discription how to reload the magazin would be much needed. everytime i try the whole thing goes BOOOM.
