Foreword
The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante is an incredibly well written game with a complex set of choices and consequences. Set in a very interesting constructed world where the divine has a concrete, palpable presence and where humanity is divided through a caste system and led by an ancient and powerful Empire.

The game offer a choose-your-own adventure style gameplay, and since lots of decisions can lead to fortune or ruins, I wanted to try to write up a guide on how to survive and thrive in the world.

The guide you're reading now is aimed to make Sir Brante live the life of a priest and inquisitor, make him experience the spiritual side of the world as much as possible, explore the lore of the Twins, and keep his family as happy as possible before leading a successful defense of the city of Anizotte.

This guide aim to make you experience events that fits into this life, by entering the psychology of Sir Brante. It also aims to absolutely keep the Brante family alive through the entire experience, even if it would cost an arranged marriage. The Path of a Priest is not a particulary hard path to follow, but you won't impact the prosperity of the province as much as you can in other paths. Your reputation is also much more vulnerable on this Path, and you can easily ruin your family reputation by not going through the more questionnable solutions of the Inquisition. This Path is a work of balance, and patience, and taking every opportunity you can to maintain your position in this harsh, unforgiving world.

You fill find an Alternate version of this Path at the end of this guide that aim at keeping the family unity as strong as possible to Unite it during the Peace Time chapter.
Also, you will be faced with a dire choice at the end of the Peace Time chapter. If you follow this guide you will be able to experience the entire game, but you're also free to choose the other option in the event "The Triumph of the Will" for a very powerful, if heartless, ending.

I hope you will enjoy this guide, and if you're interested in a Sir Brante following the path of a nobleman, rebel or imperial, or that of an audiacious Rebel, please look out for my other guides "Selection of Fate".

    Willpower +5 (from 0 to 5)
    Tommas Guerro: Remained friends

    Diplomacy +1 (from 12 to 13)
    Scheming +1 (from 10 to 11)

Father Mark is on the other side of the Pascal's wager: he argue that if we don't have any will to realize that we're in bliss or suffering in the hereafter, then people stands to receive infinite losses from not spending their lives as they see fit.

    Archduke Milanidas: Grateful
You feel no hatred to them – only compassion for these children lost in the dark.

  • An Old Friend. Walk away
    Tommas Guerro -1 (from 1 to 0)
As much as turning your back to Tommas hurt, the path of a priest doesn't mesh very well with Tommas' story. The reputation penalty for having dinner with Tommas would hurt you on the long term, especially since reputation gains are more rare on this path.

  • In the Shadow of the Tree. Point out the flaws of the New Faith
    Theology +1 (20)
    Eloquence +1 (from 14 to 15)
A very important event that gives you perspective: you learn that Augustin El Borne is a New Believer, and even if the New Faith has split the Faith there is one thing about its teaching that deserve attention: that people are allowed to stumble along the way. It sounds like... mercy. Or forgiveness.

  • The Call of the Ancestors. Support Stephan's superiority

    Willpower +40 (from -5 to 30)
Father Ulrich +2 (from 1 to 3) and now your Master
    Died Thrice
A very interesting event. First, you learn more about the world and the faith, about the banned teaching of the prophet and the important concept of Will that permeate your life. Second, by exhausting yourself before reaching this point, you are trapped by the Will of Ulrich, which will be very important for later. And finally, you experience your third death, which is Will related.

  • (Special Event) Privilege and Authority. Let the nobleman go
    Inquisition Power -1 (from 8 to 7)
    Willpower -5 (from 30 to 25)
    Diplomacy +1 (from 14 to 15)
    Jeanne -1 (from 5 to 4)
There is no reason to torture the nobleman, even if he is a New Believer. Your goal is to guide the New Faith back into the fold, not kill their believers and aggravate the entire city.

  • Miracles and Wonders. Proclaim this occurrence a miracle of the Twins
Wealth of Magra +1 (from 4 to 5)
    Inquisition power -1 (from 7 to 6)
Tolerance of Faiths +1 (from 4 to 5)
    Theology +1 (20)
    Manipulation +1 (from 15 to 16)
This is a very important event in your priest path. Ariadella may be a witch, but she uses her power selflessly and for a good cause. You already conivnced Jeanne to guide Aylis the witch to the right path. Do the same here.
“Nothing will grow in Gracinia without me! This village will die...”

  • (Special Event) Lethal Weapons. Refuse

”The Twins have Their own Lots, just as we have ours. And just as They follow Their Lots, so must we follow ours.”

  • (Special Event) Stephan's Gambit. Agree
Stephan Brante +1 (5) and Secret Plot
A most difficult choice, but a necessary one. It is a chauvinistic thing to do, but an arranged marriage is the only way Gloria could live by her Lot. At least Stephan went out of his way to convince a nobleman to marry a commoner out of love and disregarding status, just like Robert did when he married Lydia.

  • A Confession. It was a miracle
    Willpower +5 (30)
Jeanne +1 (5) and Grown Close
Jeanne is top cute nun again.

  • The Patriarch's Sermon. Accuse Cassius
    Inquisition power +1 (from 7 to 8)
    Reputation +1 (from 6 to 7)
    Valor +1 (from 11 to 12)
    Willpower -10 (from 30 to 10)
Cassius thinks you are trapped, cornered. But he has underestimated the force of your Will.

    Willpower -5 (from 20 to 15)
Nathan Brante +1 (5) and Recruited
A major and satisfying event in your priest path. This is the second admonition you give your brother. Remember that Mark is dooming the people they're trying to save according to the Old Faith.
”I got down on my knees and begged Them for forgiveness, even though I know They never, ever forgive...”

  • The Renegade. Lure Mark into a trap
    Destiny: Evidence against Cassius
    Inquisition Power +2 (from 8 to 10)
Tolerance of Faiths -1 (from 3 to 2)
    Reputation -1 (from 6 to 5)
    Scheming +1 (from 12 to 13)
    Father Mark: Imprisoned
It is of utmost importance to gather evidence in this event. Capturing Mark is a necessity.

  • (Special Event) The Sentence. Send for Jeanne and Father Lennart

    Reputation +1 (from 5 to 6)
    Willpower -5 (from 15 to 10)
    Father Mark: True Death
As much as Father Mark is a genial and gentle man, what he preach is heresy and make people doubt the grand design of the Twins. You showed mercy on your brother, but you need to make sure Father Mark go through a proper tribunal.
“Naught but the prison of Their Will awaits you! Cherish every day as long as you remain free!”

  • Deathbed. Share your strength with Mother

  • (Special Event) A Moment of Respite.
    Stephan Brante +1 (from 4 to 5)
    Robert Brante +1 (from 3 to 4)
    Lydia Brante +1 (from 3 to 4)
    Nathan Brante (5)
    Willpower +10 (from 0 to 10)
It is a bit funny that as soon as Gloria is out of the house, the family get to enjoy a moment of peace and quiet.

  • (Special Event) Tommas's Wedding. Perform the wedding ceremony yourself
    Destiny: Tommas's new life
    Eloquence +1 (from 16 to 17)

This is purely a roleplaying choice as it is unique to the Priest path and is an enjoyable conclusion to Tommas's story.

  • Repentance. Call Mother
    Unity +1 (10)
    Willpower +5 (from 10 to 15)
    Manipulation +1 (from 19 to 20)

    Jeanne +1 (5)
”Answer him honestly. The Younger will be watching over us. Lying is out of question.”

  • A Family Matter. Preserve the family.
    Willpower +5 (from 15 to 20)
    Gregor Brante -2 (from 0 to -2)
In the name of preserving your family's unity and your ties with Gloria, you don't have enough reputation to become noble. Yet, would nobility really matter to you? Your destiny lies with the Twins after all.

    “No.”

”Patriarch Cassius, in the name of the sacred Order of the Inquisition, you are under arrest.”

    Final Outcomes

    Outcome of the Revolt:
The revolt is crushed without bloodshed, and the rebels who surrendered are granted mercy. The province entered an age of peace and the common estate enjoy new protections under his rule. The rest of the Empire slowly change to make everyone equals under the law.
    • Power: Gaius Tempest is the undisputed Leader of Magra.
    • Church: The Old Faith became the one true doctrine of Magra. New Believers dwindle as they are persecuted, but bloodshed is averted.
    • Wealth of Magra: Magra becomes one of the most prosperous lands in the Empire, in big part thanks to you saving Ariadella the witch.
    • Order: The province is governed by an iron fist, rooting out crime, dissent and insubordination of any kind. The order established is an example for the rest of the empire.
    • Divine Omens: Nathan creates a new Church of the Twins that teach forgiveness. This means that you, yourself, can be forgiven for having broken your vow of chastity with Jeanne. The people have now have hope.

    What became of...
    • Dorius Otton Returned to Archduke Milanidas. Lived a long life as a hero of the empire. (Bastard can't be brought to heel on a Old Faith priest path.)
    • Ulrich: Killed by your end, ending the Willist heresy.
    • Augustin El Borne: Killed by Otton. Quickly forgotten.
    • Father Lennart: Burned at the stake for being one of the leader of the Revolt. Remembered as the nemesis of the Old Faith.
    • Tommas: Lived a happy, peaceful life. Remembered you always.
    • Jeanne: Oversaw the Magran Inquisition. Remained loyally at your side her whole life (and probably sneaked with you under the White Tree again). Remembered as a righteous woman. Died of old age without fear.
    • Sophia: Executed by the Overseer.

    • The Brante Family: Rewarded by the Overseer. Became powerful and respected among the aristocracy. And found peace.
    • Robert Brante: Resumed his duties at the Prefecture. Kept to his ideals of helping the common estate and establish justice for all. Remembered as a protector of the common people's rights. (He is also named “Robert El Brante” in the epilogue despite you not achieving nobility of the Sword. Perhaps as a reward from the Overseer?)
    • Lydia Brante: Took pride in your deeds. Died without fear.
    • Stephan Brante: Became military advisor in the court of the Overseer. Ever thankful for his family.
    • Gloria: Pulled herself from her melancholy thanks to the ties to the family. Found peace and comfort in her new life.
    • Nathan Brante: Created the Elder's Witnesses, taught the Gods forgiveness.
    • Gregor Brante. Forever angry.
    • You: Restored the Old Faith to its former glory. Venerated by all in the province. Remained the patriarch of Magra until your true death. Remembered as the savior of Anizotte and the most righteous patriarch of your time.

So ends the life and suffering of Sir Brante, the Old Faith priest, a man of peculiar destiny who kept to his righteous faith for all his life and saved his city from the fire of the Revolt, and who kept his family safe and happy through every ordeals.
Alternate Path: Not joining Ulrich's heresy and Uniting the Family for a worse Family outcome.
Since you have to face a number of reputation loss toward the end of a Priest Path, it is very hard to actually achieve nobility of the Sword without having to do some very questionnable thing. One thing in particular is to completely cut ties with Gloria and doom her for a very unhappy life. So since nobility of the Sword can be safely taken out of the equation, I propose to you another path where you Unite the Family during the Deathbed event and bring peace to the family, even if this peace means not taking any side during the Revolt.

By not taking any side, the family has a slightly less good outcome after the Revolt :
- Robert Brante becomes more jaded and stop fighting for the common people, but remain a righteous and respected judge.
- Stephan Brante marry himself into nobility and lead the life of a honest and honorable nobleman, if not obscure.
- Gloria is frustrated by the Revolt's failure but begins to trust the Overseer judgement after a while. She still write poetry, hoping that somebody, someday will read it.

Since this alternate path imply having to deal with the Mark of Dishonor any way, it means that we don't need to seek reputation and can freely engage in more selfless interactions.

I also made it so this Path avoid meddling with Ulrich's heresy and see that Father Mark escape the Inquisition with his life.

Chapter I. Childhood
Birth : Reach to the palm
(…)
The Lot of Suffering: Demand an explanation
Gloria's Rhymes: Comfort your sister
Newborn Cry: Redirect her anger on yourself
(…)
Sweet Temptation: Mock your Grandfather along with your sister
Father's Sword: Agree with Father
The Sacrament: Raise your Head

Chapter II. Adolescence
(...)
Stephan's Arrival: Join Gloria in her plight
(...)
Sons of the Nobility: Challenge Diederik to a fight
(…)
The Shadow of the Past: Accept Gloria as your sister.
(…)
Agony: Run away with Nathan & Gloria
Last Respect: Give dagger back
(...)

Chapter IV. Peace Time
(…)
An Old Friend: Have dinner with Tommas
(…)
The Principle of Will: Disagree
(…)
Stephan's Gambit: Disagree
The Illegitimate Girl: Refuse to help
(…)
The Patriarch's Sermon: Refuse (third death)
Rebuild the Temple in the following (Special Event)
(…)
The Sentence: Release Mark from captivity
Deathbed: Unite the family
(…)

The rest will play out the same. You will have to Agree with Father during the first event of the Revolt chapter to stay in Anizotte and not take any side.

So this is Jeanne route? Happy end?

Could we get a "become the Shadow" path next? I've been wanting to shoot for Theomasochist for forever but every time I try it always goes south.

Hello, I just wish to signal what I think is a mistake in the guide. In 'The trail of Sorcery' event, you say that we must chose "Chase the mage", but it's not possible to take this path, as Jeanne is 'Wavering' since "The Black book" event. However, the option "Capture the mage" is possible because she's wavering, and it gives the exact stats change as you describe in the guide.

I would go with uniting the family ahead of time. I mean is it that much more difficult then say the Rebel Lord in that case should you forgo being ennobled by the sword? You can then let players make the decision to have your family either stay out of it or push to side with the rebels if they really want to regardless of what happens with Stefan etc. Him leaving isn't really that much more of a difference to me compared to Gloria's own forced exile in the Imperial Lord or Old Faith route.

@KrimzonStriker
I hesitate for the New Faith guide because to make the Brante family choose the side of the Rebellion (and keep Stephan in touch with the family despite exile) it necessitate so much moral compromises and contradicting choices that it makes Brante behave like a lunatic.
On the other hand, it's very easy to go "too much" into the New Faith and end the game with the New Faith so powerful that they start to persecute Old Faith believers.
It's gonna be hard to achieve a golden path but I will think about making a guide for it. Maybe by uniting the Brante family instead of choosing a side.
I'd also like to do a Imperial Lotless guide that side with Vernan or try to achieve nobility by themselves, if people would be interested in that too.
But more important than that, I want to thank you for your interest in the guides :)

@Bryock
Well I'd look forward to it if you could. You maintain as much of a moral balance as you can in your guides and I think the New Faith almost ideal to that style for those who really prefer it. Just something to consider ;)

I could go back to the game now that some time has passed to try to make a guide, if more people want it :)

Nice, any chance for a New Faith follower guide as well? 😁

Hey I noticed under The March of the New Faith event under The Revolt, you wrote "Fend them off with the champions of faith," yet the effects are from the option "Stand with Jeanne and drive the procession away." Great guide, by the way. Could you make a guide for the new faith inquisitor?

As always, a great guide and edition to the "Selection of Fate" series! I definitely plan to follow it after my inevitable true death because of the one of the dumb choices I make...
