Sky Mesa

Description
Sky Mesa is an effort to recreate the sense of awe and wonder I got from the opening of Half-Life: Alyx. But unlike the dark creepy tunnels that followed in HLA, I wanted to create the kind of bright, wide open spaces where I would actually want to be. And I would try to achieve engagement without relying on combat.

This is my first update to the map. I’ve learned more in the last few years and I wanted to fix some things, improve others and add some new stuff. The concept is still this: a floating fantasy environment in the sky with massive rock formations, a tropical jungle, waterfalls and a lagoon. Geodesic structures are suspended from the rocks and can be explored, and there are a number of climbing routes. There are also some hidden areas to be found.

This update has two main additions. They are:

1. Free Flight mode available at loading. Players can now fly around the map at a decent speed, and take off from high places or from crates located around the forest.

2. Fully developed Nighttime Mode that can be toggled from tablets located around the map.

And some objects (dining chairs and lamps) are now physics objects that can be picked up. There is also a link to a new game play video highlighting the Free Flight and Nighttime Modes. NOTE: this update sets player continuous movement speed, so launch options that set it should be removed.

I'm assuming you've probably found the fusion reactor by now, but i'll give two hints as to where its at;
Fly up high enough and try to see if you can spot any buildings you don't recall visiting
Check behind the pillar you start out on, and you'll see a unique looking structure over there :tobdog:

Also for anyone like me who spent over half an hour trying to find the cavern;
The 'dome' is slightly misleading (assuming you took 'dome' to mean the large dome-shaped space next to the hotel). Check instead underneath the sphere-shaped spot near the center of the map. There is a tunnel there hidden behind some trees and foliage.

Found the cavern and rode in the airship but can't find the fusion reactor.
I went around the entire outer perimiter looking back towards the entire floating basilisk
(after 1st trying to also ride the moving airship, felt like a dog chasing a car)
I even crossed underneath the structure looking up
and as far as GIYF, it really wasn't mine this time.
Any clues on its whereabouts, anyone?

I am primarily interested in VR as "experience", and not "game" as such. I agree that the huge focus on combat for so much VR content limits the market potential for this amazing technology. I am trying to create interesting environments with exploration as the primary focus, while incorporating some challenges and puzzles to create engagement. It seems likely to me that the future of VR content will include many things we can't yet imagine, and that shooting at things will be a very small part of that future.

It is a shame that the VR market for exploration without shooting something is very small

Is this inspired partly by games like MYST (Beautiful scenery without a combat-focus)?

The odd part is that I dont fear looking down from a high height, its looking up.
The few climbs I saw around looked fine enough, climbing rock walls is fun, but hanging from them is very much so not ;3;

I have a major fear of heights myself, so you're not alone. Making Sky Mesa helped me get used to the visual part at least. You can avoid the first climb and just jump down to the forest level and explore. Find the private house for a clue for continuing. Unfortunately there will be more climbing up the main rock tower but you can avoid some of it by using the powered rope ascender.
