1. Mounting a Monster
There are three ways to mount a monster and initiate "Wyvern Riding".

a) Doing "Mounting Damage"

b) Using a Puppet Spider

c) Having a Monster Attack the Monster You Wish to Mount
1. a) Mounting Damage
Traditionwise this is excersised by attacking a monster from above. In Monster Hunter Rise certain Switch skills do "Mounting Damage" regardless whether its from above a monster or not.

The blue oval around the damage number indicates that the attack counted as "mounting damage"
1. b) Puppet Spiders
Available on most maps and easy to acquire, they are a convenient Hunting Helper to make monsters mountable. All you need to do is to learn to aim them towards the monster you want to mount.

Despite they do a single damage point of one, the effect you want is guaranteed as long as the monster's "Wyvern Riding Status" allows it.

Veteran's Tip
Make use of your detailed map to have an easy time finding them.

1. c) Monsters Make Monsters Mountable
When two monsters meet, they will fight almost every time. Even if its two monsters of the same kind. On rare occassions one monster will just leave, but in every other you can catch a ride. While turf wars look special, the result will be the same. One monster will be hit and becomes mountable for the hunter, provided its Wyvern Riding status is not on cooldown.

Veteran's Tip
You may encourage monsters to fight by using Stinkminks and Wailnards.
Check out the video to see a demonstration.

2. Wyvern Riding Status
"Wyvern Riding Status" follows the same principle as other stati like Poison, Paralysis and Sleep. There is a hidden "build-up-counter" to make a monster mountable. Normally the target monsters have higher thresholds than non-target monsters.

Like with other stati the "Wyvern Riding Status" has a cooldown between the afflictions, before it can be applied again to a monster. The known cooldowns are

5 Minutes on Global
Which means you can mount a monster every five minutes, provided the way how the status is afflicted differs. As in: first time its via Puppet Spider -> second time via mountable damage -> third time via a monster launched towards it <= all of the three of them within 15 minutes.

10 Minutes on Specific Action
When a monster is made mountable with mounting attacks, it will not become mountable again for the next 10 minutes by the same means. You would need to change your mounting attempts to something else, like e.g. using a Puppet Spider after the five minutes global cooldown.

Veteran's Tip
A lot of beginners start with the impression that with certain attacks it takes only one or two attempts to make a monster mountable. Truth is, unlike with poison and other statis, the Wyvern Riding status is build up upon the "mounting damage" you afflict a monster with. The impression that the number of attacks matters with multi-hit-attacks is a misconception, as a result of a very low threshold to begin with - especially with non-target-monsters.

3. A Shiny Matter
A speciality of "Wyvern Riding", which makes it such a popular thing to begin with, is the fact that it forces monster to drop materials, known as "Shiny Drops" - for their distinctive looks. Tackling a monster against another, makes the tackled monster dropping one loot item - which can be repeated up to three dropped materials loot items per monster per hunt.

I fell... just consider it as part of a demonstration of how important Evade action is!

Having a map filled with three monsters means therefore up to nine "Shiny Drops" just for using "Wyvern Riding". An amount of extra loot drops which rivals quest rewards amounts with ease, at little to no efforts.

And since the monster attacks can be devastating, it is also an easy way to break monster parts for even more loot reward at the result screen - regardless whether you hunt the tackled monster or not.
4. Wirebugs Actions
During Wyvern Riding your Wirebugs are used for the Emergency Evasion action.
That Evade action is important for three things

a) Countering a Monster's Attack
When being attacked while Wyvern Riding, you can go into counter by using a well timed Evade action. You want to do so, because every successful enemy attack on your mounted monster will lessen the Wyvern Riding time.

b) Launching Into Walls
When there is no other monster nearby, you want to launch the mounted monster into walls in order to deal damage and inflict a knockdown. Every time after launching your mounted monster into a wall, hit the Evade action to regain control. Otherwise the monster will just fall flat. With three Wirebugs you can launch a mounted monster up to four times against walls.

c) Cancel Attack Animation
The most important reason to make use of the Evade action and the Wirebugs would be the fact that it cancels the mounted monster's attack animation. That is important due to the fact that some strong attacks have long follow up cool down phases. But whenever you cancel the animation you can continue attacking, allowing you in excersising many more attacks during your Wyvern Riding time in total than you usually could do if you would not make use of the animation cancellation.
5. Launching Monster against Monster
Launching a monster into another monster, makes the other monster mountable. So if your target e.g. was monster A, which is currently mounted by you, and you launch it towards monster B, you can "encourage" monster B to soften your actual target with extra damage by "switching your mount".
6. Mounted Punisher
During the countdown for the Mounted Punisher you can still give out strong attacks. Make use of that and trigger the Mounted Punisher as late as possible for a maximum damage output during a Wyvern Riding session.
7. Apexes and Elder Dragons
You cannot ride Apexes. Causing enough "mounting damage" or other means to mount monsters on them will lead to trigger the mounting animation on them, briefly. But they are unmountable.

Surprising enough you can mount Elder Dragons, with the exception of the monster from the intro sequence.
8. Reduced Damage
A mounted monster takes reduced damage. When playing multiplayer you want to either change target or use the time when you target monster is mounted to recover and sharpen your weapon.
