Florida Neck by Waikalua

What if part of Florida was narrowed to a small isthmus, also known to geographers as a neck?

That’s the inspiration for Florida Neck. Also because rednecks.

Requires: Mass Transit DLC

Features:
Two outside road connections: one highway one national road
Two outside rail connections
Two shipping connections: one on each coastline, numerous harbor carve outs
Two air connections
Five sparsely pre-built areas with working wind energy and water connections

If this map reminds you of the beautiful Tarpon Springs Florida map by Mr. Miyagi it’s because I started my map-making career by just trying to make a few tweaks to that map.

I loved the realistic meandering watercourses and many drainages of Tarpon, but wanted a second coastline.

Archipelago maps with rail and highway coming in from two sides were my sole fixation as a player. Then I wondered if making an isthmus versus an archipelago would maximize the land area available.

Turns out yes. And, if you put lots of little streams and lakes in there you more than recover the waterfront you sacrificed by going mainland versus island.

Though the region is known for it’s flatness, Florida Neck unveils the geography in it’s most compelling light for citybuilders.

Dotting the US southern Atlantic coast are bluffs like St. John’s in Jacksonville and Yamacraw in Savannah, escarpments creating natural harbors, pre-Columbian centers of industry and commerce.

There are two headlands on the map, one on each coast.

A large freshwater lake mostly splits the sides of the 25 tiles of Tarpon, that is duplicated here. One corner of Mr. Miyagi’s map has a gently sloping sandy beach peninsula with lagoons; I expanded on this with a series of barrier islands of this ilk.

Bermuda Theme is also copied to Florida Neck, it was the closest to the real look I could find.

I tried to avoid requiring Mass Transit DLC, but it was the only way I could build it out conforming to my own standards.

Hope you have a wonderful trip to Florida Neck!

UPDATED AUGUST 5, 2022.

Really excited that Florida Neck was reviewed on YouTube by the great Bon Bon B.

Trees under roads and other issues mentioned in the review have been corrected but feel free to let me know if I missed anything.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Florida Neck!
